Hi! I can speak to WUSTL, I was one of their finalists this year and from what I've heard each year gets a bit more competitive. Having a faculty mentor already in mind will definitely help.

I got taken off the waitlist on JHU, the only school I applied in this cycle. Feel so blessed!! Thank you, Everyone, for your support and sharing in the tough waiting time. This is a great community. I would never be able to survive in the process without this forum. Wish those still on waitlists the best luck! For JHU folks, I would like to connect with you guys offline ~~

Alright! Got my final rejections from Boston and Hopkins (although both of their rejection letters were quite kind!).
So Tulane it is! Let me get this ball rolling and start prepping for this move!

Just had an interview for a school I was on the waitlist for! Makes it a little difficult since this is also the deadline for other acceptances but I'm sure we're all navigating as best we can. Good luck to everyone if you are waiting on news!

Finally finally FINALLY received my first offer of admission to the University of Maryland Environmental Health PhD program!!! However, it's unfunded for my first year so I'll be carrying a small stipend from one of my prior mentors and likely commuting from home to save rental costs. It's a dream program due to mentorship, connections, and projects so I don't want to turn it down! For those still waiting, it ain't over til it's over

Just been accepted to the GW PhD program in Global Public Health Sciences! After a stream of rejection mails, this is the first acceptance letter and I'm tearing up ? I was really prepared for the worst, as this is my second cycle of applying. I really couldn't believe at first though how I'd been rejected or waitlisted by so many schools I applied.. but to those who are still in the waiting game, don't give up yet. I got my interview request in mid March and nearly gave up as I knew the funded positions were highly competitive (they said they are taking only two students) - but you never know where life takes you to!

Also, I want to add that, although I found this forum super helpful, for others this place was damaging to their mental health. The admissions process is brutal and the collective anxiety here can be too much for many. So I don’t begrudge anyone from unplugging.

Definitely true. But I think it’s because this thread is for applicants. When you’re already locked in, it’s not as relevant. And I think most hesitate to talk about their next steps (planning a move, quitting their shitty job, picking classes etc) when others are reeling from not hearing back. I’m a woman but I’m pretty willing to say that bragging about an admit while people are trying to pick up the pieces of a crazy cycle is a d*ck move.

But with that said, if anyone wants to start a new thread about the hereafter, I’m definitely down to contribute!

I have an interview at University of Arizona tomorrow...
If I had to guess, maybe I was on some sort of a waitlist and then contacted after an unsuccessful first round, not very sure. Putting this out there more so for folks waiting for this school and thinking all is lost. It definitely is not!

It would be nice to have a thread or something where we’re able to talk about our first semester. I’m sure the folks applying next year would be interested to see what the schools are like from the vantage of first years.

Good idea, @DrPH20xy! If you get whatever you’re thinking going, I’d be happy to contribute.

A few programs "recommend" that at lease one LOR come from a professor if you've been out of school for less than 5 years, but to my knowledge none require it.
My first time applying (2 years ago) I followed the recommendation and got 2 excellent letters from work and 1 average letter from a professor (I had worked with him my first year of grad school, so at that point 4 years ago). I kind of regret getting that letter.
This second time applying, I was 4 years out of grad school when applying (5 when starting the program, though), and just skipped the prof letter and got 2 letters from my current workplace and one from my former. They were all excellent, and I think a big part of my acceptance.
Long-winded way of saying- I'd go with the strongest letters you can get. If that's a professor you had a great relationship with, awesome. If it's current supervisors etc, then just do that. I don't think it will disqualify you though do check with the programs you apply to JIC.

I am so elated. I got into the PhD Program at UTHealth Houston in Environmental Health Dept !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my first real acceptance. And though I am waiting on other schools, looks like this is my most logical choice.
Just a little bit clueless on the funding! Could someone share the information if they have any?

I am not familiar with those schools (although I’m partial to Tulane because I went to school next door) but I’d look at current students’ CVs and see if the experiences, pubs (and their impact factors), and external funding match what you envision for your own CV. I’d also look to see what graduates do in the 1-2 years thereafter. If you’re seeing more on the tenure track than are postdocs, that’s a strong indicator of connections and preparedness than anything else. If you’re seeing more folks in industry, I’d assess whether you’d be interested in similar roles and if they’re in more senior/leadership positions or if they’re entry level. The former is a great sign and says to me that graduates are prepared for and trusted with high level work.

This is how I’d approach things if all things were equal.

Also just got a rejection from UC Berkeley’s DrPH program. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions the past month!!

Good luck to everyone starting programs in the fall, folks still waiting for decisions, and those who are reapplying. This was my 2nd application cycle and worked so hard to get to this stage! I’m also thrilled to say I accepted a fully funded offer from UCLA’s PhD in CHS last week! Stay persistent and strong y’all!! ♥️✊?

    Hello everyone,
Completed the University of South Florida DrPH Laboratory Science and Practice interview this AM and immediately received acceptance to the Fall 2021, 7 student cohort following the call.  I was completely shocked and actually shed a tear.  It was the only program I applied to since the program is looking for very specific laboratory experience, licensure and MPH background.
Interestingly enough, I had emailed them this Tuesday inquiring about the status of my app and 10 minutes later received the interview request email.  I was a bit skeptical thinking that they may have forgotten about me and offered me a "token" interview but I guess I was wrong.
Thank you all for the support and best of luck to everyone on here!

Yes yes yes! I know how anxious we can get through this process. And yes, we might be 'competing' for the same spot. But it should never be about that. I am glad we had the opportunity to get to know each other better and are now going to be in the same program.
To those who have not heard from the programs you're hoping yet, or are waitlisted. Don't lose hope just yet, I know it seems like the cycle is close to being over, but a lot can happen. Finish strong. And if it is the case that you don't get in this year, reach out to programs and ask for feedback. Also, don't be discouraged to apply again. We are all capable to great things and I am thankful to know that so many people are interested in continuing to work in Public Health.
