Albany's CoL isn't too bad last I checked. I had a friend that lived there for a few years and they said it was pretty affordable, hopefully that is still the case! -

I emailed the DGS at Kentucky, was told they hope to have decisions out by this coming week, the week of the 15th. -

Yeah, I agree with this 100%. If you sent in everything and they didn't even look at your file you should at least get the fee back. -

Sorry that happened to you. Hopefully you showing that you submitted the transcripts will get them to review your file but if they've already sent out admits I'd say the best you could hope for would be a waitlist since sending someone an admit after they've already sent them all out would likely mess with their numbers/estimates. You can't really do much other than that; you got dealt a bad hand with OSU in an already REALLY bad cycle, you'll just have to roll with it. If it makes you feel any better I have a friend who applied to OSU for Computer Science and he had a similar thing happen, seems like OSU as a whole might be a bit backwards when it comes to transcripts. -

I mean, we're all adults and they can't exactly forbid us from getting jobs. Generally programs can dictate that you can only work up to x amount of extra hours if the job is on campus or related to the university in some capacity but they can't stop you from going and getting a part time job off campus. They will generally say that its impossible to work a part time job and devote enough time to schooling/research though but it's ultimately your decision to make in the end. -

Well it's going on 5 PM EST and while Iowa still technically has an hour until close of business I'll just have to assume a reject or waitlist there. It's been a rough cycle personally. -

The professor said they had two spots for CP and I would guess that means they would offer admissions to slightly more than 2 and expect a few rejections. -

I have news for people who applied for CP at Cornell. I'm in a seminar with one of the professors who is on the committee for CP; they are planning to admit 2 people for CP so...take that for what it is worth. -

Congrats on the acceptance! I will be keeping my fingers crossed and hoping I get something soon! Seems like a really great program. -

Yeah, from looking at previous years UChicago and OSU don't normally release rejections until a week or two after admits and waitlists go out. -

A waitlist is always better than a straight reject, means you are still in the running if some people turn down their initial offers! -

I don't think that is controversial at all. We are all drawn to different programs for different reasons and you feel you are a better fit at USC than Chicago! Still, you were right in saying that validation is nice. I'm looking at it in another light in that if and when I get admitted somewhere I'm going to make those programs regret not admitting me. Our value and worth as scholars are not defined by committees that don't know us. -

The first one isn't really a factor we as potential students or even eventual students have much control over sadly. While it is good that top tier universities are increasing stipends it should go without saying that doesn't mean the cohorts HAVE to decrease in size as they can rein in budgets in better ways. As for the second one, that is certainly a valid fear but I think future students at least have some say in that because if teaching loads DO get out of hand, students can always attempt to unionize to get the admin to knock that crap off. Both cases just go to show how academia as a whole is starting to be mirror more corporate bullshit jobs to quote David Graeber (rest in power, comrade). If you all haven't read Bullshit Jobs by Graeber I would highly recommend it; while it mostly focuses on the private sector he does talk about academia quite a bit too. -

Fair point! I'm definitely biased towards R given that is what I do most of my work in. I'm pretty sure people just develop biases towards whatever they use more often...I'm sure there is a study on that somewhere if I go looking for it lol -

It's definitely nice to see and have confirmed that this cycle in particular is more brutal than others like we all expected. Yet more evidence to show why Capitalism as a whole is a failure and should be done away with! *steps off soapbox* I do really like the manufactured scarcity part though and its nice to have that acknowledged out loud. -

You can get by with Stata but I feel like R is so much more flexible and can do a lot more work if you take the time to learn it. -

To add to discussion of programming languages, if you are going to learn R you should become familiar with the tidyverse package; it is very useful and helpful and makes doing stuff in R much easier in my opinion. -

As someone who has taken programs or learned both R and Stata I can say I prefer R over Stata nine times out of ten! Can't say I've ever worked with LateX but in general improving your coding in any language is a super good idea.
