2020-2021 Application Thread
Mad Scientist Malfrost replied to Theory007's topic in Political Science Forum
For those interested in CIR or any of the other master programs at Chicago in the wake of rejection you can send an email to the Student Affairs Administrator to let you know if your application was forwarded to them by the PHD committee. -

Felt pretty bad yesterday but going to seminar today and engaging in some great academic discussion helped me feel much better. For the people who applied to Cornell, I hope all of you are accepted because it's such a great department and school in general here. -

I honestly forgot CIR was a one year program. I had it in my mind that it was two. Having it only be a year makes it much more doable finically but holy moly I bet the workload is intense. -

Gotcha. Thanks for this info. I'll reach out to someone at CIR to see if I do indeed need to go through the whole application process again or if since I clicked the box saying to consider on the PHD that will already be handled. I don't want to send them another app to read through if they don't need it per say. -

So you've already sent in an application for CIR? I'm guessing you had to get new LoRs? -

For those of us they maybe experiencing some existential dread I recommend this video below where someone has clipped Steve Harvey to make it look like he is constantly experiencing an existential crisis. Sometimes you get the most relief and cantharis by being able to laugh at your own circumstances from the outside looking in I find! -

Well I'd say wait until you get the official rejection letter back and hopefully you have an offer. If not you can reach out to the DGS and say you meant to check that box or you could just apply for CIR if you are willing to go that route, the application is open until April 30th. -

I checked the box on my Chicago app that I'd be fine with an offer for CIR if I didn't get admitted to the PHD program there. I'm hoping when I do get the rejection I get an offer to CIR with at least SOME funding. I'd consider that to be sure. -

Also @NeedaMormon, I just followed you on Twitter. Your research is fascinating. I follow Japanese politics and culture as a hobby and I'm really looking forward to seeing you grow your research if you continue to focus on voter turnout in Japan! -

Good, I'm glad I'm not at your caliber then. Cause you and people like you are the part of the reason why political science has such a bad reputation in academia among other social sciences anyway. I can safely say I would rather be DEAD than be in a cohort with someone as repugnant as you. -

You ought to because they are kinder and a lot more gracious and inspiring than you. I don't know the circumstances in your life but you are the kind of person I would loathe to be in a cohort with. -

Congrats on the interview! What's your subfield if you don't mind my asking? I'm just about ready to throw in the towel for Vandy since I haven't gotten an interview invite yet. -

It depends on the program. The Master Program I'm in at Cornell ended up basically being fully funded. I got a scholarship for my first semester and then had either TA or RA positions that included a tuition waiver and stipend each semester. I think that is the exception and not the rule for Master's though, the program info should tell you if you're eligible for TA or RA positions. -

Congrats to the one admit and one waitlist from UChicago! I don't see anything in my inbox so I'm guessing that is a rejection there for me as well. Thought I'd get out of today with only SOME bad news. -

That's a good take and I like it a lot lol Well it's going on 6 PM EST which means I won't be hearing anything more today most likely. Congrats to all the various admits to different schools! Glad so many people got good news today. I'll be trying to take some of my own advice and attempt to not let this Emory rejection get me down too much! Tomorrow is another day! -

I hope the GRE stays optional or outright gets axed from admissions. There is little proof that standardized testing is a good indication of success in grad school and it's well know that it's biased against PoC who have neither the time nor funds to prepare for it as well as middle to upper class whites. -
