If I remember correctly, Michener is Writing, and NWP is Creative Writing.

Asked Billy (UT Austin contact) if Michener decisions have been made, if we’ll hear about them tomorrow or next week.

Do you have a professor in mind that you wanted to work with? Do you have a preferred climate? Do you want to stay closer or further from home? Just a few questions to consider.

Not too bummed about my NWP rejection. It doesn't look like I'm going to be wanting to go to TX any time soon.

I've been feeling progressively more this way since December, when I started submitting apps. Now that I've been accepted to a program I'm relishing the thought of resigning soon. I hope your acceptance comes thru so you can enjoy the same feeling!

Ughhhh gross, I didn't know about this situation at UT Austin. Cue me being unbothered when the rejection comes.

Yeahhhhhhh not just with the whole mask off thing, nor Texas being 100 percent clear to open everything at full capacity. Another thing to add onto the garbage heap is the disgusting situation with UT Austin, “The Eyes of Texas”, and their donors. While some of us don’t know about Michener acceptances yet, if I (a part black person) get rejected from Michener, I’ll be genuinely relieved.

Hey pals! I am having a conversation this afternoon with the director of a program to which I was accepted. I'm stunned that I was actually selected by one of my top choices, so I'm having a hard time coming up with questions to ask! Any suggestions from folks who have gone through the process before, or are currently making decisions?

Yeah, the whole "Now, EVERYONE can die in the name of pride--hooray!" vibe doesn't exactly make that the most appealing corner of the country to get cozy in over the next few years. But, c'est la vie. I hope you get into the program you want the most.

Greetings, people of Grad Cafe! I, the mysterious forthetruththeyburnyou, am going to let A Cat out of A Bag and let you know that I am in fact The Workshop's Managing Editor. Pleasure making your acquaintance. Please see below for an exciting message!   The Workshop will be hosting a *free* I Applied To MFAs: What's Next? panel for MFA applicants (as well as any of you out there who sat out this cycle, but are thinking of applying down the line) on Sunday, March 14th from 4-5:30PM Eastern.
Our panelists are graduates in poetry, fiction, CNF, and hybrid-genre writing from the University of Alabama, Brown, Cornell, Indiana University, Northern Michigan University, UNC-Wilmington, and Warren Wilson. Members of The Workshop team with MFAs from OSU and CU Boulder will also be in the chat helping answer questions, and the event will be spearheaded by moderator Eshani Surya (U of Arizona). We'll be answering questions on how to proceed once you've heard back from your programs, no matter your results.   Full details as well as links to our registration and Q&A forms are up on The Workshop's site at readtheworkshop.com/events/.    We're also on Facebook @readtheworkshop, Twitter @The__Workshop, and Instagram @readtheworkshop. And we can't wait to have you at our I Applied To MFAs: What's Next? panel!

(with special thanks to @feralgrad for suggesting I post on this thread)

If you can afford it and really want to go, that's your call, but if I get a partially-funded offer, I'm just trying again next year. There's no universe in which I take on loans for an MFA.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if I kicked myself in the back of the head, but about a third of my writing sample (poetry) was made up of pieces that have already been published. One of my mentors did warn me though, that I didn't want my sample to be "too polished," as programs wanted more potential than polish.

Yesterday around 9pm I had got a call from a "no caller id" number. I let it go to VM, but of course no message was left, and now I can't stop thinking about it AND DEAR GOD I don't want to be like this for the rest of my life!!!!
As far as portfolios go, I guess my advice (for what it's worth) would be to REVISE REVISE REVISE--give the portfolio to a teacher or mentor you trust, ideally someone who reads contemporary publications and maybe even has an MFA themselves.  Someone who understands what you're trying to accomplish in your writing (not someone who just wants you to write like them).  I think it's really tempting to try and get feedback from friends and family, but unless they read literary magazines it might not be super helpful and just make you second guess your own instinct.
I know the goal is to be "teachable," but you still want the writing to be GOOD. I mean, it seems kind of like a contradiction but there is a level of polish that should be noticeable. In other words, there should be intention in your writing--you thought about this line break, this particular word choice, this particular tense, etc. etc. I think one thing that really helped me this past year was reading widely and habitually. And not just the classics, but things that are CURRENT.
Anyway, congrats to all those who heard back from places today! Wishing everyone the best ❤️

An extremely accomplished poetry teacher of mine, who had almost 40 poems published in journals last year, lets his poems sit for 2-5 years before considering them finished. A 2-5 year waiting period isn't right for everyone, but it's definitely helped me to revisit work months or even years after the red-hot moment of creation has cooled.

I know I’m not fiction, but for me I didn’t include any poetry written after Mid-October (my first deadline was the 1st of December). Also, hot-take here, I didn’t revise my manuscript after my first submission. I didn’t want to make it worse, as when I go back and edit poems in a hurry/when I’m stressed, they’re somehow worse than the original.
And for awhile, I didn’t look at my manuscript because I didn’t want to agonize over my mistakes. However, I did submit two poems to three different magazines and realized that I made a lot of strange choices in terms of structure and details. But even after I sent in the poems to the magazines, I still found things to edit. It never ends, I will always cringe.

Thank you so much! I'm out of GradCafe "reactions" for today, which are now being transferred to my physical body in a weird but not wholly unpleasant way.

I am really wondering what is going on with Michener poetry. Radio silence aside from an acceptance that seems like it could have been improperly entered? Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part, but it feels like acceptances have not gone out yet? (Hoping to keep the dream alive but I would also just like my rejection now if that is the case so I can stop wondering!)
