How do you know it is still competitive? I doubt there is a single person who will turn down ANY fully funded program in order to pay for Columbia. That means Columbia is now the 61st most competitive program. It is almost certainly behind Brooklyn College which charges $8,000 per year. There are posts about Brooklyn, but I haven't see any about Columbia except to complain about tuition.

It seems Columbia MFA is very competitive despite the funding. I'm not sure of the "hard" numbers of fiction acceptances, but I think it's around 60-70 a cohort. If anyone knows for sure, please advise. But since, I suspect, many of these 60-70 "acceptances" are already applying to all the other NYC area programs or top-tiers (IWW, Syracuse etc.) , they probably lose more than a few of them to less expensive programs. I can understand ponying up to the cost of Columbia's MFA if you have access to their faculty and can afford it, but if I got in, I would want to know how accessible they really are. Are they there to teach? Are they invested in their students? Or they there for Columbia's PR Department and a paycheck and just want to be left alone to do their own writing when they get some precious time?

Columbia definitely had lost a lot of candidates to other schools with better funding for years. Considering how ridiculous their application is and their big ol’ Ivy League money, Columbia really needs to do better with funding.

I’m in the same boat, waiting to hear about the other NYC schools with an acceptance from SLC. If anyone thinks of really good questions, please share because I want us all to be prepared to get the info to help us choose the right program. I do love a lot of SLC’s aspects, though. Especially teaching opportunities in so many different areas. I’d have to move from Brooklyn further up, though.

Same here!!! I interviewed Wednesday and it was short and professional — truly nothing to write home about. At least he said they would try to notify us by the end of the weekend. Here’s hoping we see each other in Brooklyn next fall! ??

U of Florida, Brooklyn College, Hunter College, Notre Dame, U of Maryland, Columbia, Emerson College, and Boston U. All for fiction. Looks like Florida sent out its acceptances and the two CUNY schools have their interviews going, so I'm not too confident about those.
On a more positive note, a lit magazine accepted one of my stories today.

I interviewed with him on Tuesday! I think he is probably doing all of them since he seemed to have some pretty extensive slots available? I hope yours went well! I'm curious how many he's interviewing and how many they're taking on. BK is my top choice and I'm a lil anxious.

I applied to MFAs a couple years ago and had no idea about this forum or Draft. I think I may have been less compulsive and more chill about the experience back then. My loved ones are urging me to stay away from these sites

I've been feeling progressively more this way since December, when I started submitting apps. Now that I've been accepted to a program I'm relishing the thought of resigning soon. I hope your acceptance comes thru so you can enjoy the same feeling!

Just interviewed with Joshua Henkin at Brooklyn College. I would be interested to know if he was running the interviews for all the other finalists as well or if y’all interviewed with someone else.

Honestly, I took notes. I wrote down answers to likely questions (e.g. what are you reading lately?), as well as a few of my own questions. This is also a strategy I use in job interviews. It may sound strange, but most people seem impressed by the preparation.

as someone who only just joined Draft somewhat recently, I'll quickly pass on what others said to me—don't worry too much about getting accepted into the group in the meanwhile, it can take a few weeks to get approved because of how many requests they get etc!
Here's, to the best of my knowledge, all the current info about these schools that I've seen (apologies in advance if any of this is outdated, others pls feel free to correct or add on!)
UVA: a student indicated that acceptances should go out by email sometime in early-mid March, with rejections and waitlists following later. Brown: as some others have posted here, there's some possibly sus reports on results for a single poetry admission and several rejections, but everyone on Draft is of the consensus that these may be fake, as no one else has reported any news. NYU has made several calls to candidates accepted with major fellowships, but it's atm unclear if or when more acceptances/waitlists will be going out. It sounds like frequently people hear back all the way through April (though that can go for lots of programs!) No news on Columbia (yet!) Several Michener and NWP decisions have gone out to my knowledge, though I don't believe all have so I'll be holding onto that hope for ya in the meanwhile ❤️ Quite a lot of other programs seem to begin with poetry admissions, and at the very least it seems like fiction and poetry don't always inform about decisions at the same time, so it's worth keeping that in mind if you start to see acceptances coming from the other genres at any of the above schools!

just landed an interview for Brooklyn College (my top choice if I ignore financial restrictions). felt auspicious because it’s bernie’s alma mater and he emailed me about Walmart in the exact same second

I also got an interview with BK College! I think I've asked this before with no luck but does anyone have any insight into their particular interview process? Thank you in advance!
