Just got an e-mail from David Crouse saying I'm waitlisted at U-Wash Seattle! I'm so thrown. I honestly wrote it off as a straight rejection.

"The admissions committee was very favorably impressed by your accomplishment and potential as a writer. Unfortunately, the small size of our program—just four incoming in each genre—means that a number of highly qualified candidates, such as yourself, won’t receive an initial offer. Less than three percent of applicants will be admitted this year, and only a slightly larger group recommended for the waiting list."

The website says the program typically admits 10-12 students! Wonder why the class is so small this time round.

CONGRATS!!!! Wow that is 3x smaller.

I am also hoping to receive a waitlist from them (poetry). Did you just get the email right now? Are you also poetry?

UW Seattle, Iowa, Michener for starters, since I've seen talk of answers from them, but have received nothing. Perhaps it's simply an issue of automated latency?

UW Seattle: Someone received this email from them yesterday:

"The initial offers have gone out from both the poetry and prose committees. Because our offers involve funding, accepted applicants have until April 15th to let us know their decision although we hope they will tell us sooner. Given our funding, we cannot make new offers until we've heard the decisions of these initial applicants.

Waitlisted applicants will be notified by email from the Director of Creative Writing. These have not gone out yet. But if you do not receive a waitlist email you will probably not receive an offer this year although we will not deny anyone until we are close to getting our class.

Thank you for your patience during this process."

Iowa: There have been a few people waitlisted so not sure if that means all acceptances are done, but that's likely the case. Iowa responds via post for both rejections and waitlists. (Poetry and fiction writers both have been waitlisted).

Michener: Actually, you should check your portal. A lot of people (me included lol) were rejected there before they received an email to check so just make sure you don't have anything there. I also did see someone say something about all decisions being communicated by "early this week" so if you don't see anything from Michener by tomorrow its likely a rejection and likely an administrative oversight like @Downtozero suggested.

    Hope this helps!

Since I'm waiting to hear back from ten other schools, I was hoping to see some info from MFA Draft.

I'm waiting on 6 if that helps!! A lot of people are in limbo so don't feel alone. What schools are you wondering about in particular? I'm happy to help give a summary of what I've encountered on draft. It does take a while to get into the group, I gotchu though feel free to ask specifics.

In regards to Michener I have seen a few people on draft in the same boat in terms of not hearing anything. There was a round of rejections yesterday so maybe no news there is good news? :) (read: an optimistic take)

I can't believe this, but I just got my first acceptance. I got an email from the University of Maryland, with details of TAship. I am so happy. My heart is going pounding its way out of my chest right now. I'm shaking and crying, and my heart won't stop pounding. I can't believe it happened. I am so overjoyed, I can barely type, or move, or breathe. I am so happy. It feels unreal.

Yup, saw that waitlist and am now feeling pretty confident acceptances must be finished. ?

Not necessarily - for example on draft there was an ASU candidate that was waitlisted last week (I think maybe tuesday?) and someone else was accepted saturday night. I think we just gotta wait it out!!

It was my understanding that the Brown poetry acceptance was widely considered to be a troll? I have a friend in the fiction program who said that they were gonna start notifying last week but that was only for fiction. Don't think the heads are talking to eachother

Unfortunately no this was a real person (in draft) if you’re talking about a poetry acceptance on 3/5

I should have been more clear. This story was part of my app portfolio, which at the time I submitted my apps had been nominated by the lit mag. I get how it can look pesky and possibly backfire to reach out and say, “Hey, btw the piece I submitted now got finalized in some “best of” anthology. I also get that adcoms don’t really care too much about pub credits and do their own evaluating. Still, I wonder if I’m a waitlist contender somewhere whether this development could help move me up the list...

The publication I'm referencing having asked my recommenders about whether or not to notify the schools that it was being published was in my app also. Answer was still no -- but I feel your pain.

  8. kind of related but random question regarding publications: if my work was accepted for an upcoming issue and at the time of acceptance they said it would be coming out at the end of february but the old issue is still up....is there an etiquette on asking about when the work will be published or will be lit mag gods be angry if I question them and decide to like no longer use my work lol

Hello nice people! My friend just told me about this forum, very cool and helpful :)

I've been accepted to Mississippi for fiction with full funding/teaching job thing, Sarah Lawrence with symbolic funding but not nearly enough for me to afford it... apart from that,I've applied to NYU and the New School and heard nothing from either. I am a fiction writer, by the way. good luck to everyone here :)

Congrats!!! Mississippi is a great program!!!!

Late last night a lit mag emailed me that one of my flash stories they had nominated was accepted into “Best Small Fictions” for 2021. Now I’m wondering whether I should let programs I haven’t heard back from know. Is this bad etiquette?

People have asked similar things in draft and the consensus has been no. I personally asked my profs/recommenders if they thought I should let the committees know about publication news I had received and they said it would probably come across as pestering and that the schools only care about their own evaluations of your work so publication news/other accolades will not help. I'd say don't stress and CONGRATS!!!

Thank you!! A personal email. My portal hasn't been updated yet.

Well done you should be so so proud of yourself! They didn't happen to say what the heck is going on with poetry did they? So confused on that front hahah.

How do you know it is still competitive? I doubt there is a single person who will turn down ANY fully funded program in order to pay for Columbia. That means Columbia is now the 61st most competitive program. It is almost certainly behind  Brooklyn College which charges  $8,000 per year.  There are posts about Brooklyn, but I haven't see any about Columbia except to complain about tuition.

    So...

Word on the street was Iowa was supposed to make their calls “within the week” last week, and I’m seeing only one poetry acceptance out of 25.

Do we think Iowa will be calling accepted poets today?

I'm not sure but a poet was called by Iowa on draft on wednesday with a teaching position and the consensus in draft seems to be that people without fellowships may be getting called later because the teaching positions have to be approved by the english department before being offered. Lets hope that's the delay :)

edit: the teaching positions, unlike fellowships, require english department approval

Asked Billy (UT Austin contact) if Michener decisions have been made, if we’ll hear about them tomorrow or next week.

edit: nvm I misread this completely sorry lol

Saw some UNCW fiction acceptances on Draft. Does anyone know how they are notifying, or if waitlists/rejections have gone out?

I saw someone say they “think” they were waitlisted for UNCW on draft but I couldn’t tell you what that means exactly...best of luck!!!

as someone who only just joined Draft somewhat recently, I'll quickly pass on what others said to me—don't worry too much about getting accepted into the group in the meanwhile, it can take a few weeks to get approved because of how many requests they get etc!

Here's, to the best of my knowledge, all the current info about these schools that I've seen (apologies in advance if any of this is outdated, others pls feel free to correct or add on!)

    • UVA: a student indicated that acceptances should go out by email sometime in early-mid March, with rejections and waitlists following later.
    • Brown: as some others have posted here, there's some possibly sus reports on results for a single poetry admission and several rejections, but everyone on Draft is of the consensus that these may be fake, as no one else has reported any news.
    • NYU has made several calls to candidates accepted with major fellowships, but it's atm unclear if or when more acceptances/waitlists will be going out. It sounds like frequently people hear back all the way through April (though that can go for lots of programs!)
    • No news on Columbia (yet!)
    • Several Michener and NWP decisions have gone out to my knowledge, though I don't believe all have so I'll be holding onto that hope for ya in the meanwhile ❤️

Quite a lot of other programs seem to begin with poetry admissions, and at the very least it seems like fiction and poetry don't always inform about decisions at the same time, so it's worth keeping that in mind if you start to see acceptances coming from the other genres at any of the above schools!

YOU ARE THE BEST. THANK YOU -- this is seriously so so appreciated. ❤️

Hi everyone! I applied to New Writers Project (poetry) at UT Austin and received a notification that I'm on a "very short" waitlist. I also applied to Michener. Any poetry applicants heard from Michener yet?

Congrats!! Did you hear via email about the waitlist?
