  1. Congrats to all that got in! So excited for each and every one of you.

For those that didn't get the answer they hoped for, don't give up. Quite a few of my classmates here applied 2 or even 3 times to get into HGSE.

For those who applied to the Ed.M program, what are your all’s stats? Also, so hopeful results come out tomorrow!! It’s been a long wait and I’m so excited for it to be here! Good luck to everyone.

I think this is such a great idea! I know  @Here2Teach posted the GC applicant admission data from 2013-2022 that @graciasadios and @mjsmith compiled. Hoping that one of them will update the data from this years applicants that share their stats in here.

I am hoping it is okay to ask this, but would anyone be willing to look at my Statement of Purpose and give me some feedback? I have been working on it for several weeks now, and am feeling stuck. ?

I am late seeing this, but I am also happy to look at it if you like, @Here2Teach

I am happy to do the same for other people. I want to pay it forward for all the help I got last year.

Hi all! I wanted to plug the different recruitment and information events that HGSE does. I only was able to go to virtual ones, but they were INCREDIBLY helpful in my applications. They are doing in-person events this year too, and I bet they would be even more helpful if you could attend. They keep updating where they will be on part of HGSE's webpage: https://www.gse.harvard.edu/admissions/events

Agree with @AnnieRUok. The virtual sessions were really helpful!

Shameless plug, HGSE is SO SO SO worth the effort! You work hard, but so many opportunities!

A little bit about me as an applicant (thanks @DogeCoin for the template from last year):

    Program/Concentration: ELOE/No Concentration
GRE: Not planning to take. I feel like I've been out of school too long to take it and do well at it
Work experience: 9 years as an elementary school teacher in the U.S.
    Undergrad: BA in Elementary Education
    Undergrad GPA: 3.3
Research: None for me. I hope this doesn't hurt my chances ?
LORs: 1 from a professor from my undergrad that I have kept in touch with, 1 from my principal, 1 from the director of a tutoring center I work at part time.
Other info: If I get in, I would be long distance from my husband for the year. I would love to chat with other applicants that might be in a similar position.

Congratulations on starting the journey! I'm excited for you and everyone else starting out on this adventure, @Here2Teach!

Please reach out to me if I can help out as you apply to HGSE. So many helped me out, and I want to do the same for others!

  5. It has been such a high since getting the good news! I also wanted to try and help pay it forward to future folks that apply and post my information here. I saw the post from @TabTurbo that had a page with a lot of information from accepted applicants that @graciasadios and @mjsmith put together. Maybe they can add all of our information there if other people feel ok posting their information here:

    Concentration/Program: LDIT
    GRE: 158 Verbal, 156 Quant, 4.0 AW
Work experience: 3 years full-time work while doing my BS degree (teller at a bank)
    Undergrad: BS in Psychology
    Undergrad GPA: 3.5
Research: One small project in undergrad. Presented it at an undergrad research forum for school.
LORs: 2 from former professors, 1 from my boss
Other info: Can't think of anything really interesting or helpful for here

If it is the same as last year, you will get your admissions decision a few weeks before you'll get your fin aid package.

    Thank you for info!

Can I message you with a few specific questions?

    Hi All...

Actually came over here to start the thread... only to discover it has already been started.  I got admitted to the LDIT for fall 2021, but couldn't make it for some personal reasons. Luckily I was granted a deferral. I'm happy to help in any way. Good luck to all the folks applying!

Hi caxiatec! Congratulations on the acceptance (and deferral)? I'm planning to apply to LDIT too, and it is nice to find someone else here with a similar interest. Can I message you with some specific question I have?

Hi friends! For those who missed the session, I believe the recording will be posted on the Recorded Webinar page soon. But in the meantime, I captured some Q&A in case anyone is interested:

Select Q&A from July 28 General Info Session

Q: Are need-based grants available for international students?
A: International students are eligible for need-based grants.

Q: How's the tuition fee for international students?
A: Tuition is the same regardless of citizenship.

Q: If we don't send GRE scores, will our application be considered less?
A: The score will be considered if it’s submitted, but applications will not be considered less without GRE for the EdM program. Applicants should make the personal decision and consider whether submitting the GRE will strengthen the application, or whether the rest of the applications adequately demonstrate candidacy.

Q: As a prospective Ed.M. student, am I disadvantaged for having an intended niche that isn't quite covered by one of the concentrations?
A: Concentration is not a must as long as your interest is covered by one of the programs.

Q: Is the application deadline the same for both the online and the residential Ed.M. program?
    A: Yes

Q: Do you accept transfer credits from other doctoral programs for the Ed program?
A: No, we do not accept transfer credits

Q: Does my application need to be submitted ahead of the deadline so that my recommenders have time to write and meet the deadline too?
A: No. Applicants can designate recommenders in the online portal prior to deadline while working on the application.

Q: Are admissions for the Ed.M. program rolling? Is there any advantage to applying as soon as applications open rather than closer to the deadline?
A: No. Applications are not reviewed until after the Jan 15, 2022 deadline.

Q: I graduated 15 years ago - are three professional letters of recommendation acceptable?
A: Yes. Recommenders should still discuss transferable skills and analytical capabilities of the candidates.

Q: For the ELOE program, do you need a minimum number of years of experience?
A: No. It’s more important that the candidate feels it’s the right time and articulate in application.

Q: How many candidates are typically admitted into the PH.D program per cohort?
A: There’s a hard limit of 25 seats and typically 25 offers are made, sometimes a few more.

Q: I completed my bachelor's degree from an institution at which English was the sole language of instruction but my native language is not English. Do I need to take up IELTS?
A: No if the bachelor’s degree is from an institution at which English is the sole language of instruction.

Q: When does the Ed.M academic year begin? Just want to clarify because I remembered hearing you say that the foundational courses are done in June/July
A: Foundational courses are online courses.

Q: Is there any benefit to submitting the PhD application ahead of the December 1st deadline or will all applications be looked at at the same time?
A: Applications are reviewed all at the same time.

Q: Can you apply for 2 masters programs (1 residential and online)
A: No. Applicants can only submit one application per program level.

Q: I am a criminologist and I wish to work towards improving the quality of police officers through training design and curriculum development. Would my background without education in “education” make me eligible for EdM?
A: Education experience or prior training is not required, but applicants should have a desire in education. Admission will be interested in hearing about how the applicant plans to use the strength of the experience and apply to the study.

Q: In previous years, I believe some EdLD applicants have been invited to interview in February. Will that be happening again?
A: Yes. TBD whether it will be in-person or virtual.

Q: Does the foundation course count towards the 42 credit hours?
    A: Yes.

Thank you for sharing this, @TabTurbo! I was so sad I missed it, and all your info here is very helpful!

To your Q2, I think you can also look into Stanford's Learning Design and Technology (MS) within their graduate school of education. The program attracts students interested in EdTech/start-up given its proximity to Silicon Valley and has historically been even more selective than HGSE I believe.

Also, if you apply to Stanford LDT this year, note they are not accepting GRE from any applicant (indicated by "GRE Not Required"). They explained that this is different from "GRE Optional" for some programs, which allow but not require GRE submission.

Thanks you for this information! I will definitely look at the program at Stanford. Very interesting they aren't even accepting the GRE at all, maybe that will become a long-term change there.

  12. Thanks for getting this started, @TabTurbo! I'm really excited to apply this time around!

I posted a couple of questions I have on the HGSE 2021 thread, but I'll add them here too if anyone has any thoughts.

I'm planning to apply to different Learning/Instructional technology programs this next year, and wanted to ask folks some questions here if that is okay.

    1. How can I make myself stand out best when applying to the LDIT program here at HGSE? If anyone that was accepted to the LDIT program is willing to chat with me, that would be amazing!

    2. So far I'm planning to apply to Harvard and Teacher's College. Any other places you all think would be good places to consider? I'm willing to move anywhere in the US.

    Good luck everyone!
