PhD English - 2025 Application Cycle
gagne replied to TheDigitalHumanist's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Just saw a waitlist go up for one of my schools. No emails from anyone yet. Nervous this will be a complete shut out season even as I’ve heard from no one. -

Just noticed there are two SUNY Buffalo results posted from Jan 8th and a new UIUC notification posted as of yesterday so a little nervous about what this means for me. One is a reject for Buffalo and another is a waitlist and the UIUC is an acceptance. Can only keep my eyes peeled on my emails and hope 🤞 -

Has anyone noticed with the updated Results page layout that it’s harder to find results than last year? Checking out when results usually come out for my schools and it’s more confusing than last year. -

All early or mid December for me. Last year, my only January deadlines were Québécois (McGill and Concordia), though didn’t reapply mostly due to funding concerns. -
Comp Lit vs. English PhD
gagne replied to Alyssaf24's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I almost went Comp Lit for some programs but didn’t for me. Your work sounds like it would fit better with Comp Lit than general Lit and often the English or Lit programs overlap with Comp Lit with professors who are affiliated with both. -

Tomorrow is Dec 1st. I know one of mine is due then and last year so was Cornell. How are we feeling? -

I am barreling toward deadlines. Turned in one’s for the 1st, 2nd, and 13th of December. Been so busy as an instructor and working full time in retail that I’m using what “free time” I have to complete everything. Thankful for some mentors and university writing center fellows who I’ve worked with for feedback. -

50/50 on whether I’ll reapply. Still considering with opportunities available and whether now is the time (wanting to do it close to finishing my Master’s but already adjunct teaching). -

I’m so sorry they did this to you!! This is cruel and unprofessional in my opinion, hope next season is kinder to you ❤️ I’m applying to adjunct in my area as I’m also preparing for my one waitlist to turn me down so right there with you- 309 replies

Concordia emailed me yesterday (first the dept’s graduate coordinator, then the form letter). Rejected due to lack of funding/they were unable to fully fund me and stated they don’t accept applicants unless they can fund them. Looks like my first season is ending (unless Illinois turns that waitlist to an acceptance like a doctoral program dark horse). Looking into adjunct community college jobs near me (I have an MFA and a master’s in Childhood Education and TESOL so could apply to adjunct positions in any of the three at a community college).- 309 replies

One month until the big PhD admission decision deadline. Maybe tides will turn in my favor (Illinois hopefully turns my waitlist into an acceptance and/or Concordia accepts me)- 309 replies

Thank you for sharing this! I applied to McGill and Concordia. Finally got McGill rejection yesterday. Who knows when Concordia will release. Some of these unofficial notifications are brutal. Also confused why those not accepted or waitlisted (thus, rejected) receive news in waves??- 309 replies

Went to a general grad into session with Concordia online (couldn’t make it for in-person grad school open house last month) and still no admissions news 😕 also haven’t heard from McGill but saw a Canadian acceptance around Valentines Day and an American acceptance around the 28th. Concerned this is a silent rejection- 309 replies

Thank you all for the advice and link! I took a chance and sent an email. It's approximately a month after the initial email (I was so stunned and then felt awkward just sending an "omg thank you" email in response). I informed them they are my top domestic choice and when I will likely hear back from at the latest from my remaining programs (both of which are international and thus, may not have great funding for me). I'm hopeful that by sending this email-letter of continued interest outlining once more what drew me to the school-program and an example of my extension of my current research methods in poetics will aid my likelihood of acceptance.- 309 replies

Thinking about sending a letter of continued interest to Illinois. Does anybody have a model for programs they've sent these letters to previously? The email from Illinois doesn't discourage reaching out nor does it encourage it.- 309 replies

Still no updates from Brown...feeling less optimistic. For Concordia though, I'm curious if it's typical to get Open House invites? It seems like a general DGS Open House, albeit in-person and on the 17th, so I cannot go (even looked into flights and too tight a turn around). Maybe this is somehow a good omen for Concordia and Montreal.- 309 replies
