  1. My god, I can imagine. I guess the one positive for me (and perhaps this other person) is I've taught already, am currently teaching English as a New Language so I already teach reading and writing (albeit at different levels) and can definitely say a lot of teaching is an art itself (and so much brain power, so so much). PS, English as a New Language (ENL) is ESL in some areas or English as a Foreign Language, so I work with K-12 multilingual students
  2. The one program I've been accepted to thus far and am on the fence as I await hearing about funding that has pedagogical training in the curriculum is Naropa University in Boulder, CO. It is also the only MFA I've seen with both critical and creative theses (yes, doing two theses). The school also has an elementary education program and seems to have a lot of graduates able to go on to PhDs, so guessing they may have a strength there. https://www.naropa.edu/academics/graduate-academics/mfa-creative-writing-poetics/degree-requirements/
  3. Brown Poetry seems to have been released. Got email and portal.
  4. I haven’t heard a peep from either Brown nor Columbia. I’m also focused on poetry, which there aren’t a lot of results for and Brown hasn’t released yet.
  5. When there is word through the forum grapevine that Columbia and Brown are expected to drop decisions this week and it’s after 5pm EST on Thursday: *insert I’M IN TROUBLE meme*
  6. Saw that and seemed confusing to me as they usually send to portal and I have no emails so we’ll see
  7. Is anybody else waiting on Columbia and Brown this week and feeling a little on edge?
  8. Yes, that exact pattern. I'm less familiar with MA admissions and so wondering if this admission choice of "rejected from PhD, accepted to MA" is a funding choice on schools' parts
  9. Hi, I’m a bit of a lurker here who applied to MFAs this cycle but do want to go on to do a PhD in the future and so have been lurking here. I’m curious about the prevalence of rejected from PhD accepted to MA. Is there a reason why programs do this ? As someone with a BA and then an unrelated MS Education, a little lost on this practice.
  10. This is great to know! I am hoping it is not on the 15th though as that's a hard day for me already in my personal life.
  11. Poetry is still not updated for Brown for me. Must just be fiction hearing back.
  12. This makes sense and playwriting isn’t housed under Literary Arts like Fiction and Poetry. Honestly a little nervous about Brown application as I took a risk with my portfolio since they have so many translators and multilingual writers so I showed my bilingual cards so to speak and mentioned some multilingual techniques I am familiar with in education.
  13. I checked the ApplyWeb portal for Brown and there's no decision for me for Poetry. Either they decide on Fiction and Playwriting earlier or those are false posts.
  14. I applied to Brown in Poetry but will check my portal when my computer charges and update if there’s poetry news.
  15. This is fair. For me, currently, it’s how it is all set up and not being my end goal. Either way, wishing all good luck and that we end up where we’re meant to be in the future.
  16. To be honest, Naropa isn’t a fully funded guarantee but I’m trying to leave the dumpster fire of K-12 to further pursue higher education and an eventual PhD and I’ve set up massive savings account for the last year.
  17. What is this « New Yorker test »? I doubt it applies to the whole state as I imagine UB has different goals than URoc or Syracuse or even other SUNY schools vs those in NYC like CUNY, NYU, Columbia, etc.
  18. Pitt sent out the most vague rejection email ever
  19. Brown said on the site to await for mid-March
  20. One thing I did when I first started sending work out was I sent it to publications linked to workshops or programs I've participated in. Then, I got enough of a wind to look into submission calls that fit for what I had already written and was passionate about. Just so happened to publish an essay about vultures in Connecticut and moving away.
  21. Thank you! Yes, the two professors who wrote all of my recommendations said to me during our last office hours meeting before I graduated: "I hope you turn around and do a PhD or MFA some day. You'd make an excellent professor." And I at the time was going into K-12 so mixed bag. But spending time outside of liberal arts academia and seeing how much I didn't gel with K-12 master's program or how K-12 is set up made me realize how much I enjoy higher education and academia (even if it sucks at times). So, I've been thinking and one through-line for me is archives and seeing just how I read and write naturally, archives, memory, poetics of language are very central for me and something I care a lot about. Just reached out to the professor who taught the one archive studies course I had in undergraduate and hope if we pivot to PhD to also have her recommendation and figure out how to write a critical piece from the last two or three years for submission (or do Naropa no matter funding and do a critical thesis that's a kicking off point).
  22. I feel you on the PhD and MFA thoughts. A year ago when this all started in motion for me, I felt I could go either way but was like "yeah MFA seems more familiar and attainable" as I did English with a CW-Poetry focus in undergrad and haven't felt confident about critical work I've done but now am more familiar with what my research would be and think with mentorship if all else fails, could re-apply and apply for PhDs in the near future (next year? who knows, waiting on Naropa funding to settle the score and know they do a critical thesis and creative thesis)
  23. assuming rejection as apparently two poetry posted to Draft and there's a poetry post here, so would've likely gotten a call yesterday and they email waitlist and assuming they would've emailed yesterday (I never got an interview anyways)
  24. well, at best I am hoping for a waitlist then (there are only 3 spots per genre)
  25. There's a Pitt CNF acceptance posted to Results said by phone. I am NERVOUS especially as I had my phone on DND all day as I have had a lot of anxiety around notifications and was attending a virtual event. Edit: Anyone in Draft, are there Poetry acceptances for Pitt also posted? I'm not interested in joining another FB group or page
