PhD English - 2024 Admissions
gagne replied to Trent0yzz's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I agree! Though I also feel like I needed the time and being with folks to work on them as I 1) had a three week intensive with my current program all of June and 2) spent July moving and August settling in with my new place so not as worried and felt like I narrowed and clarified my focus during the semester with frequent feedback from professors (I wouldn't have known where to even start as a first-generation student)- 309 replies

Is anyone else nervous about UIUC (University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign) coming out likely next Wednesday? Last year was January 11th, 2nd Wednesday of January.- 309 replies

Yes! I'm focusing on the intersection(s) of archive theory/memory studies, poetics and literature, and queer theory/studies. Most of my current research has been on the queer art of forgetting/death drive of a 1960s literary newsletter, The Floating Bear, and poetics of ephemera as a practice of archival futurity. I haven't delved a lot into queer studies in my research because it's hyper-local and there aren't a lot of non-male queer voices (I lean toward sapphic and lesbian collections/studies).- 309 replies

awesome! do you have a subtopic or niche within this? I've been reading a lot about lesbian and sapphic archives and definitely wanna use doctoral study and resources to delve more into it- 309 replies

Hoping this one recommender being chronically late won’t ruin my chances…asked and he agreed to write recs for these schools and yet, he’s late on every single one

whew, a lot of the applications have been flying in as I've been busy wrapping up the semester, just have Brown left to submit (getting a second opinion about including a secondary writing sample whether it'd help or hurt my chances)- 309 replies

My last recommender for the Dec 1st schools submitted his letters yesterday! Still a little nervous but hopefully these two schools won’t hold it against me.

How much does it weigh on your application if you have a recommender who still hasn't submitted a letter of recommendation 2-3 days after the deadline? Currently dealing with a recommender who totally blanked on all the emails I sent and our meetings in which I told him when deadlines were and what schools I was applying to. Missed the deadline for the two on December 1st and nervous he's gonna screw me over for the three in mid-December. Hoping I didn't just throw money away on applications to have someone not submit on time/risk them just throwing my application away.

Same!!! I’m still finalizing Brown, Northwestern, and UChicago. McGill and Concordia are coming down the pipe but working on closest deadlines atop graduate school deadlines of my current program. Trying not to beat myself up turning in my applications so close to the deadlines.- 309 replies

Re-enlivening this thread! I've been trying to hone a lot of my research interests into something that's of interest but not too broad. Currently writing my second paper based in a local archive (but want to also be able to work with other archives) and special collections pertaining to ephemera, forgetting, and futurity in archival studies with application of queer ways of being and remembering, particularly as they collide. Who/what is in an archive? A special collection? How do these institutions adapt or can they and what do we know from literature about this? Particularly interested in literary theory that pertains to memory, archives, ephemera, and fleeting individuals.

I applied to Brown last year and didn't hear from them until March!

I'm a first year MFA student but considering a PhD right afterwards and so scoping out these forums to figure out where to apply that has full funding (and then from there focus on area of interest).

Congrats! I feel you on victorious first round. I still haven’t heard from Columbia but hearing about how they give little to no funding atop being expensive and in an expensive city, looking to go to Naropa come fall.

Lols, everyone mentioning hearing from Columbia and I haven’t heard a peep. I was recommended by a professor to apply to Columbia and put a lot of faith in her, which is why I applied there. Likely would not apply again if don’t get in and get miraculous funding as the program was more a shot in the dark for me.
