Really now! Okay, I'll confess: I've been considering getting some variation of that quote permanently inked onto my body. I've been browsing a bunch of tattoo forums and have never come across this particular quote--but now I know there's at least one other person out there with it!

Thanks, Trip! Looks like I'll be going the MA route this fall--but at least I have a lot of nice funded offers.

"Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viola or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?" -Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Thank you! I'm from South Florida originally but Tally feels like a whole 'nother planet...

Trip! I'm so envious! I tried to snag tickets but failed. Say hi to Bjork for me -
Haha, no way! I will definitely PM you with questions about the area

Congrats Jbarks! I received an acceptance email today as well Their open house conflicts with another school's open house, so I'm not sure how I'm going to work that out... Good luck to you, crystalleem, and anyone else waiting!

In my experience, auditing or enrolling in a classes as a non-matriculating student can help a lot. That's what I did after an unsuccessful round of applications last year, and this time I was able to produce a solid piece of writing that I used as my sample. -
I SEE AN ACCEPTANCE POSTED! Congrats to whoever you are. It's 9:15 in the morning...I just got to work...and I already know today will be spent frazzled and stressed, shirking my duties in order to obsessively check gmail and gradcafe. Happy Friday!

Yeah, I'm going a little ~cray cray~ waiting for FSU. The results board shows that notifications were already sent out by this time last year (and the year before that!). What's going on?

I have a CERTIFICATE in creative writing. One more thing my mom gets to hang up on her wall. I seriously considered MFA programs but decided that a Literature PhD would provide a little more job security (I use that term loosely). -

This, totally. Texas A&M is being SO nice to me and they're paying for my flight to College Station for recruitment weekend but I just don't know if I'm in love with the program... -

I was in Westerleigh. Joe and Pat's was a block away from my place. And Goodfellas (that vodka pie...is...unreal). Now I am starving. -

Bushwick is fine. Really. I live pretty far east on the L train and it's safe. ...Oh, except for that homicidal drug dealer who hangs out on my stoop I also lived on Staten Island for about a year and can confirm that the ferry is awful and the express buses are too expensive. But I've never had better pizza in my life... Denino's... *sigh* -

Dorinda, if it makes you feel better, I would KILL to get into Duke. KILL. So don't let this stuff detract from the pride you should feel at getting into two extremely competitive and prestigious schools! -
C'monnnn, FSU! We're going to get notifications tomorrow, I can feel it! Also, my horoscope reads, "You are ready for challenging, intellectual activities." Hell yeah, I am.
-
Yeah, I called the department and just gave them my last name.

Thanks, Trip. I'm not *too* distraught because I still have my 2 acceptances, plus 4 more to hear back from, PLUS I'm meeting with the director of CUNY's MALS program tomorrow to investigate that possibility... Oh well, congratulations to all the acceptees and wait-listees!

Oh, Rutgers... You broke my heart </3

Bummed out at the moment because my last choice school is the one offering me a really nice, guaranteed funding package for five years. My other acceptance (which I prefer much more) will only provide a 50% scholarship. The choice seems clear, but blergh! I like the other program better #EnglishPhdApplicantProblems But let me end this on a positive note: the fact that we're all posting in this thread means we have at least one acceptance, and that is awesome! I am truly proud of us <3 -

This was me last year. I graduated with a 4.0 and with the warm blessings of my professors, so I think I got a little too cocky. I really did not understand at all how competitive this process is. All of the schools I applied to were either Ivies or in the top 15, and I was roundly rejected from all of them. It sucked. A lot. This time around, I spent a shit ton of time looking at schools that were actually good for me, and not just high up on US News and World Report's list. So far, I've had much better results. The point of this story is: if at first you don't succeed, fucking try again! You can do it. -
Congrats, Trip! You're knockin' 'em dead this year! I'm pretty sure Rutgers is a bust for me, but I'm still going to keep my fingers crossed for a waitlist notification... Maybe...
