A Good Man Is Hard to Find also by O'Conner. It's one of my all time favorite collections; her writing is so bizarre and funny and disturbing and delightful.

CUNY FL12 Acceptance
cquin replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I saw J. Mascis several times in Amherst and Northampton. He was usually pushing his son around in a stroller. Never approached him, but he seemed cool... I'll PM you with details about UMass. Overall, it was a great experience. And I am really attracted to how interdiscplinary the MALS is... Screw it, I'm going to apply. What's another $125, am I right?? -
CUNY FL12 Acceptance

I can definitely confirm that Amherst IS a cool little town (went to UMass Amherst for undergrad). They also have the most delicious sandwich shop ever. It may be a shock to move there from NY, but it's good to know that the city and Boston are just a few hours away and always available for a weekend trip. Also, is it absurd of me to apply last minute to CUNY's MA in Liberal Studies? The deadline is March 1st, and it seems as if MA students enroll in PhD classes in various disciplines... Anyone have some info on the program? -

It may make you feel better to know that I was told the bulk of CUNY's acceptances will be sent out next week. I got my rejection on Friday, so maybe you'll hear some good news soon! -

@Trip-- Texas A&M! I applied to their MA program but the DGS called me up and asked if I'd like to go straight into the PhD program. So, there's that! I'll admit that I'm a little apprehensive about five to seven years in College Station but, as they say, beggars can't be choosers... (And right now, I totally feel like a beggar knocking at the doors of the Illustrious Grad School) -

@fredngeorge-- If I could, I would hug you right now and buy you a shot. Then I'd do a shot as well. Then maybe three more. I feel like an incredible ingrate for complaining because I have one acceptance, but I just got my rejection email from my top choice and it sucks. This process is hell. We must *all* have a masochistic streak in us to embark on this journey... -

Whoa! Lots of new acceptances posted (and one rejection, it seems). Nothing yet on my end. Who are the lucky admits? -

Oh, pleeeease. This is GradCafe! I was drunkenly watching Gossip Girl the other night and when Blair just decides, LOL, going to transfer from NYU to Columbia now, I was pretty much screaming at my TV about how unfair and unrealistic it is. If that's not lunacy, I don't know what it is. -

Trip, you just made me frantically log into my Hunter webmail, only to see one new message.......... From the Dean of Students.......... About a new lactation room for nursing mothers they just built. -

To those who received acceptances-- your email was sent directly to you from a faculty member in your field and was not "official," correct? I'm splitting hairs right now because I need hope... -

Congratulations Trip and myriad!! Amazing news To CUNY: You are killing me... -
Wow, thank you for this. For what it's worth, CUNY said they will send early notifications out this week, and then proceed to intermittently release notifications until mid-March.

Just caved and called the English department to ask for a time table as to when notifications will go out. I was told that early acceptances are going out this week, but more acceptances will continue to be sent until mid-March. There were nearly 300 applicants this year... *Gulp* -
Thanks everyone!! This takes a lot of the pressure off of the waiting game.

Yeah, my heart definitely just plummeted into my stomach when I saw that acceptance posted... Congrats, hedgerows! Trip and Grunty--I'm rooting for all three of us. C'mon, CUNY! -
I don't believe they're officially notifying yet, but I just got a call from the DGS informing me of my acceptance. I applied to the MA program but he asked if I'd like to bypass that and go straight into the PhD program--of course I agreed! Nominated for a fellowship and should hear back from him in a few weeks. Serotonin is flooding my brain right now! So incredible, I'm going to grad school this year!!!!!!!

On a related note, what are you all doing to stay positive? Because I'm stumped. Really, as a second-time applicant, receiving my first rejection (well, an implicit rejection from Duke) is sending me into spirals of panic and dread. I'm inclined to burrow under my covers until April, but that isn't really an option... So how are we all trying to stay upbeat? -
Where my Duke applicants at?!

For Lit folks: just got an email from the graduate director stating that all invites have been sent out. Ugh. -

Vordhosbntwin, congratulations!! Very excited for you. In the meantime, I will continue to pray fervently to any and all gods that there are at least a couple of interview invites to be sent, one of which has my name on it... I anticipate imbibing A LOT of Jameson this weekend.
