^ Whaat, mrbrooklyn, you're considering UF as well? I was admitted to their MA program and am seriously considering it... So, Gainesville folks, here's my question: How much of a culture shock will I have moving from New York to central Florida?

Hmm, I've never been to Alligator Lounge, but when I'm in the mood for personal pizza and/or crust punks, I like the Charleston.

Union Pool, anyone? Say, this Friday? (I'll be there regardless...)

Truthfully, some of my considerations are, "How dog-friendly is this town? Is the cost of living low enough that I can comfortably afford a 60 pound dog living with me?" So you're not alone there.

Congrats, aeplo! Haha, I received the call during my lunch break as well! And I only had about five minutes to speak with him, so we're going to have a more in-depth conversation tomorrow. The gist of it was: full tuition waiver, plus stipend--I think he said $9,000 a year, but I could be mistaken. You begin teaching your second year, for your first year you mentor (not sure exactly what that entails). He began to talk about health insurance but I had to cut him off to get back to work. For a Master's program, I think it's a pretty incredible deal! -

Aaaand I just got a call from Sidney Dobrin telling me I'm in! So. Fucking. Excited! Good luck to everyone waiting! I'm assuming more notifications will go out today and tomorrow. -
Thanks for the replies, everyone! I understand that receiving my MA will in no way guarantee acceptance into a PhD program a few years down the line, but as you all pointed out, I probably won't produce my best work in an environment in which I'm unhappy. And yeah, the fact that this MA is fully funded makes me feel more confident about the situation. I just wanted to hear others' perspectives. Thanks again

Nope, she didn't say. It MUST be soon, right?? -
I applied to a mixture of PhD and MA programs and received admission into several MA programs and one decently-ranked PhD program. The school offering me the PhD is, unfortunately, my last choice. I'm not crazy about the program, not crazy about its ranking, and definitely not crazy about the location. But they are offering me an amazing funding package and have already gone above and beyond to show their interest in me. Would I be a complete and utter fool to turn down this offer for one of my (funded!) MA programs? I understand this means that in two years time I'll be going through this whole process again, but I feel much stronger about the MA school than I do about the PhD school... Advice or thoughts?

I called the department and spoke with Kathy Williams. I thought the same thing, Galoup, but maybe they just have an extraordinarily long waitlist...? Also, she emphasized that *most* rejections have gone out already, meaning that there's probably a couple more that will strike us down when we least expect it. -

Word on the street is that most of the rejections have gone out already, and what's left are a few more acceptances and the dreaded waitlist... -

I haven't heard anything either. I think I may *gulp* call the department today. -

Looks like last year they notified through a mixture of email, post, and phone, no? But I'm also curious about the rejection just posted. -

Well now I'm going to go batty waiting to hear from them, suspecting all the while that my application is actually incomplete... -

I just need to thank you, ekim and myriadways, for suggesting Black Mirror. My boyfriend and I downloaded it and watched all three in a row. Now I really, really wish there were more to watch. -
Did anyone else LOL when Fahrenheit 451 came out as an ebook?

Has anyone heard anything? I have a special investment in this school not only because I love the program, but because it's close to home and, I'll admit it, the thought of moving back to FL from NY makes my wallet sing with joy. -

Out of curiosity, myriad, what are your 4 funded MA programs? I have Wake Forest and FSU who are giving me a full ride, and Brandeis who's giving me partial funding. Aaand I have no idea what to do. I'm trying to tell myself that, ultimately, where I receive my MA is not as important as where I receive my PhD (right, y'all?) but I'm still going crazy making a decision.
