Hi! I'm going there in July for the Newhouse school. Have you figured out where you'll be staying yet?
  2. Woo hoo, an assistantship! Thank goodness for funding! I'm so grateful!

      Nice! Congratulations! :)

  3. Have any of these schools offered you any funding? Newhouse just offered me a sweet assistantship so maybe you'll hear something from them soon! Financial aid ultimately helped me decide on where to go for grad school. I was considering applying to NYU SCPS as well, but after I did some research on the program, I felt that it did not have the overall prestige that is characteristic of NYU, so I ended up not sending in an application. I'm not sure about the other programs you mentioned, but you already know I love Syracuse! Are you still planning on attending the Master's Preview on April 8? I have my plane tickets and hotel reservations all booked! In any case, good luck!
  4. Congratulations on your acceptances! I was given offers from both schools as well, and I was initially having a hard time to make a decision. In the end, Syracuse offered funding and UT didn't, so it wasn't such a tough choice after all! For photojournalism, I'm not sure about UT, but I know Syracuse's program is excellent. Also, I believe Syracuse has a shorter program, which may be appealing to some. Once I did the math, both schools would have ultimately cost me the same. In terms of location, Syracuse is close to a huge media hub, NYC, which has tons of Newhouse alumni. The Newhouse network may be very resourceful when you're looking for a job come graduation. And it's definitely colder than Austin. Coming from Houston, I'm used to the humidity and high temperatures, but I have friends that abhor the ridiculous heat when they visit us in the summer. Good luck!
  5. Have you tried orangehousing.com or padmapper.com yet? I'm in the process of looking for a place as well. I'm going to visit the campus in early April so hopefully I can get a first-hand look at some nice apartments.
  6. Congratulations to you as well! That's very nice how you got into both programs. I really want to go, but it's going to cost me ~$600 for hotel + airfare, so I'm not 100% sure yet. Initially, I wanted to attend the event to help myself make a decision between Newhouse and UT Austin, but ultimately, it all depends on funding offers. I didn't think I'd get accepted to Newhouse (it's been my dream school for years) so I was focused on attending UT, but once the admit came in, I think I'm now partial to 'Cuse. Ah, such a dilemma!
  7. Got my acceptance e-mail to Advertising on Friday. Very excited! Are you planning on visiting for the Master's Preview?
  8. Thanks for your reply, Oh.Coco., and congrats! I'm definitely jealous. An update from Newhouse's twitter: "2011-2012 Prospective Students. Admissions decisions will be delivered by e-mail around March 15." Two weeks to go!
  9. I asked my supervisors to write my LoRs, so they know I'm set to leave. My first acceptance is already in the bag, so it's pretty much a done deal. They're actually talking to the "higher-ups" to see if I can still work for them remotely while I'm at school, which would help me TREMENDOUSLY with funding. I work in the web department, and given the nature of my work, it's totally doable. Sadly, I have a feeling HR isn't going to approve.
  10. Ah, I remember reading about that. I didn't think that Newhouse interviewed anyone for their M.A. programs. Might be because she was an international applicant? In any case, I haven't heard anything from them either, since I submitted my application. Don't freak out! You're making me more nervous too, haha.
  11. I saw the same thing and my heart sank. I applied to Newhouse, but not for the Media Studies program. Didn't expect to hear from them for another week or so, since the results show that they typically contact you in early March. Guess I'll be on high alert this week!
  12. My status said that exact same thing for a while. I would not count that as a rejection.
  13. Congrats to all the admits so far! Yes, the decision should appear on the status check page.
  14. Haven't heard anything yet, sadly. I've been checking this link daily: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/faweb/cash/index.WBX They recently received my FAFSA info, and according to the site, they will begin evaluating everything in late February. I have a feeling master's students in my field don't receive any merit aid. Seems like most of that type of funding goes towards Ph.D candidates.
  15. UT finally got my FAFSA info! Please, please, please let me get funding!

  16. I saw that rejection ... very sorry to hear that! Did you apply to any other universities? Since UT hasn't said anything yet, hang in there!
  17. I think another round of acceptances just went out this week for UT Austin. Have you heard back? Still heard nothing about financial aid.
  18. I'm not sure about how adcoms work, but I can suggest a couple more universities for you to consider: USC Syracuse Mizzou Berkeley UNC Chapel Hill Northwestern University of Florida University of Colorado at Boulder University of Wisconsin-Madison Some of those aren't in big cities, but their programs are reputable nonetheless! Hopefully someone here can answer all your questions! Good luck. P.S. I'm a UH Cougar as well.
  19. So far, I've only heard back from UT Austin. Other than that, I applied to Syracuse and Georgetown for master's programs in advertising and PR respectively. Haven't heard a peep from them yet!
  20. I was excited to get a phone call from an unidentified number today! Turns out, it was a telemarketer. :(

It's normally empty, but last night there was some activity in there. Made for some great convos!

  22. Wow, that is nerve-wracking! Surely, there has to be more applicants to this program on this forum who can share their experiences with this? If I were you, I'd probably go nuts with the temptation of trying to contact the school for answers.
  23. Kathiza, it's still early! I'm sure everything will work out. @Strangefox: About Syracuse, I was curious about the process myself, so I took a look at the past results (on gradcafe), and it seems that most people get notified around early March. I guess this must be different for Ph.D candidates, especially since you mentioned they'd let you know by February. Anyhow, I hope they have good news for you soon!
  24. 3 Schools Application Fees: $130 GRE Test & Additional Scores: $206 GRE Prep Book: $20 Transcripts: $40 Thank you gifts (2 bottles of Merlot): $20 Total: $416 Ended up paying extra for a set of GRE Scores and transcripts because I didn't want to apply to that school anymore. So potentially, I could have saved $33.
