  1. Interesting. My friend is getting a one-year MA at the University of York. Curious....very curious.
  2. I was at work, looking up the average recovery time of my upcoming foot surgery (Four months off my feet! Yuck!) when my iphone beeped. I saw "Penn State" and "Congratulations" and started squealing and called/texted my husband. He, in turn, found out in a text message while he was in the middle of a conversation with his boss.
  3. Whoops! Fixing the link right now.
  4. I've found that purr therapy really eases the pain of rejection. I would love to see pictures of your familiars! This is Hermes B. Cat. This is his mate, the fashionable, fabulous Miss Millicent Moo Cat. (And yes, she's in an ice bucket. Don't judge. You can, however, judge me for my ridiculous attempt at distracting those in the waiting boat.)
  5. Davis is a wonderful location, though that area of California has really blown up within the past decade. I grew 15 miles from Davis, in Vacaville. The traffic is abysmal, but Davis is a nice, quiet town with plenty of "weekend destinations" in driving distance. Feel free to message me for more information. My husband has an interview with Davis in early March and we are just itching to make the move back home!
  6. I hope that if we all end up in Penn State, the "marrieds" can get together for a dinner party sometime and chat.
  7. I'm definitely the cray cray at this point. I have my husband's email account hooked up to my iphone. In fact, I knew about his acceptance to Penn State before he did. Anyone, the iphone is handy because it beeps whenever an incoming email arrives.
  8. Mrs. Grad

    GAH!!

Congratulations! (That's a great acceptance story, too!)
  9. Perhaps my husband will reopen the line of communication in the next couple of weeks. He simply thanked the member of the admissions committee and restated his strong interest in their program.
  10. Suit up, bring copies of your recent work, and get thank you notes in the mail before you hope on the plane home so that they arrive at their destination quickly. My husband was one of the few candidates at a recent interview weekend who wore a suit, but he was offered admission, so it's better to dress up than to dress down.
  11. My husband received the following response to a Boulder admissions inquiry this morning: "Thank you for your interest in our program. We have already invited some candidates for interview, however, your application was strong and is currently still on a waiting list. We will let you know in the next few weeks if your status changes. I am sorry that I do not have better news for you at this time." I'm heartbroken. What's strange is that I haven't seen anything about MCDB Boulder interviews anywhere. Has anyone received an invitation? This was our top choice, so it's disheartening. Should I keep hoping for admittance or should I move on?
  12. Davolicious, I'm in the same boat. My husband's only acceptance is from Penn State, and housing looks fairly abysmal for married couples and families. May I suggest Bellefonte? It's ten miles from State College, and seems to have some nice, affordable houses. Jabco Reality Management tends to have some decent options, and this site has a list of all property management companies within the State College area. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you find anything else!
  13. This sounds like fun! My husband got into Penn State, but I'm really hoping from Boulder. Unfortunately, their admissions committee hasn't made so much as a peep yet. Should I get my hopes up or be satisfied with Penn State?
  14. I've been told that it's almost better to buy in Penn State, considering the housing costs. You can get a three story, fairly new townhouse for under 150,000, which isn't bad at all.
  15. My husband was accepted to Penn State this afternoon! I am over the moon! If only I could get in contact with him so I could tell him to check his email! Hahaha!
  16. We're making delicious beignets for for breakfast and going out to dinner that evening.
  17. Hi nostimost, My husband is the one applying this year. The best you can do is give him a hug and offer him something special with each result, whether it be positive or negative. My husband and I have been going out for ice cream or casual dates as the decisions roll in. Either way, life goes on. Try to help your significant other out of his head and back into the moment. And take care of yourself. This process must be taxing on you, as well. Hope this helps! The Flambert
  18. Aren't they? It seems like a great place to live. Near (but not too near) a major airport, great housing, great shopping, and fabulous academics!
  19. The reasonably priced State College apartments (under $1000) on both hotpads and craigslist look, er, "well used" when compared to the other locations, especially if you have a pet. There are a few exceptions, but it doesn't look like you get much bang for your buck. Example: Penn State vs. Boulder Still, Penn State's amazing program would make the move worth it.
  20. My husband applied to the cell and molecular bio department. Have you heard any good news from your schools yet?

  21. Best: My husband is accepted variety of programs and we can weigh the pros and cons of each location and program. Worst: He is rejected from all nine schools. We continue to scrape by in a location with a particularly bad economy and job market, and it's made worse by the fact that I have to have major surgery on my feet in the next year.
  22. Is anyone else comparing housing options in possible school locations on Craigslist to kill time? My husband applied to nine schools, and I would have to say that CU Boulder has the best quality of life for the most reasonable cost. Penn State however... Play with me! Rank your locations by housing quality/costs!
