Yes. Both my husband and I actually grew up nearby (I was raised in Vacaville and he lived in Vallejo) so it's a little bit like returning home. The only reason Midtown really appeals to us is its contrast from our undergraduate experience. We've spent the last 4 years in Ashland, a quiet, environmentally-friendly bike/college town, so we're hoping on gaining some new experiences. Either way, one of us will have to commute, as it's unlikely that I'll be able to find work in my field (broadcasting) in Davis itself.

I'm reviving this thread for 2011 applicants. My husband accepted Davis' offer yesterday (yay!) and we have our move date set for July. We've yet to decided whether we want to live in Midtown Sacramento or Davis. Both seem to have their advantages and disadvantages. Is anyone else considering an offer from Davis at the moment? What are you planning to do for housing?
  3. Greetings, Caroline! My husband recently declined Penn State's offer, but we were looking into securing housing that fits your description. Dave (dkline60@comcast.net) is a very friendly landlord and might be a great bet for you. Some of his properties can be seen here. This website was a great tool for me while I was searching for housing. Best of luck!
  4. I'm a grad applicant's significant other and the process has been really taxing on both of us. However, in many ways, two minds have been better than one. We both work full time (he works overtime about 4 days a week), so the application/follow up process was tricky. He followed me to my undergraduate institution of choice, so it's my turn to follow him for awhile. However, it helps that he's moving us close to family, friends, and a number of universities. Should I choose to pursue a Master's degree in the future, I will have a number of options. Since his field is more competitive (and his skill set is more focused) I chose to put off my education until he gained admittance to his PhD program. This process is difficult on couples and requires a decent amount of patience and willingness to sacrifice if need be.
  5. Mr. Grad received his official acceptance today. He plans to accept the offer this evening. The wait is over for us!

  6. Can we change the title of this so that it's not English-specific? My husband was officially admitted to UC Davis' molecular bio PhD program and he intends to accept. I can't wait to move, but it's a little difficult to secure housing 4 months in advance. We're on several waiting lists for the best housing in town, but it looks like we might be moving to Sacramento rather than Davis. Either way, it will be nice to be so close to family. My parents live twenty minutes away, and his parents live forty minutes away. When is everyone planning to move?
  7. My husband's official decision (he already received word from the department) is supposed to be posted by 8:00 AM this morning. It's 6:30 AM and nothing's been updated yet. Please keep your fingers crossed!
  8. is disgusted by the lack of compassion being shown by people in her area. Viewers are calling and complaining that The Today Show isn't on and saying the tsunami warning (in our viewing area, by the way) is no big deal.

That's just pathetic. The footage looks completely terrifying. It puts things into perspective for all of us. I'm waiting to hear back from two friends over there.

here's hoping your hubby get in!

  13. I would have to disagree with you there. Very few accepted applicants on the results board go back in order to search for questions being asked of them and the results board is designed to maintain the privacy of forum members. If you would like to gain additional perspective, I suggest you create relationships with fellow forum members rather than adopting an entitled stance. Your questions were deemed inappropriate for the results page. If you'd like to suggest an addition of a comment option to each result, I would suggest making a thread devoted to your request here. However, you're probably not going to be taken seriously if you continue to flout forum rules.
  14. Get a MacBook or a MacBook Pro. You will save yourself time, headaches, and money. Even the "trusted" PC manufacturers have let their customer service/product quality slip in the last couple of years. I cycled through two brand new Dell laptops in two years. The products are just defective, and the warranty is useless. I probably spent 12+ hours on the phone with customer service and yet my defective product was never fixed. My MacBook has survived horrible accidents. If you find the right maintenance provider, you will never have to pay for repairs or maintenance costs. They are definitely worth the extra up front price.
  15. There's a simple solution. Stop asking questions on the results page. That is not what it's there for. "Someone else did it first" is not a valid excuse for civilized adults. Even better, you could post your questions about the disappearing posts in the appropriate forum.
  16. Watching my very first Bond movie.

  22. I'm a newlywed and my husband is the one applying to graduate programs this year. Initially, I chose another username, but too many people were asking me about my applications, so I thought a new title would clarify the situation. And I thought I might as well go for the nostalgic 1950s housewife theme while I was at it, hence the avatar. (Though, truth be told, I'm not a housewife at all. She works hard for the money.)
  23. Mr. Grad is making his trek down to California today. I plan on being a crazy cat lady for the next 4 days.
