  1. Same thing happened to me. They gave me some lame excuse that they couldn't take international students this year
  2. I heard that some people were rejected a month or two ago, but I haven't heard anything since. We should receive a decision in the next week or so (I hope!).
  3. I wouldn't classify myself as a forensic anthropologist or bioarchaeologist (so others will probably be of greater assistance), but... ...for a PhD forensics I'd say that U of Tennessee is at the top. U of Florida has an established program as well. Obviously there are forensic anthropologists scattered around other departments, but the two aforementioned are among the biggest players in the field. i wouldn't even know where to begin with bioarchaeology. ASU seems to be popular based on posts I've read here. Just tell your students to read articles in their intended field and find the people that they'd be interested in working with.
  4. I went to one of them. UCSB is definitely the more social of the two. While they're both right next to the beach, it's more accessible at SB and SB/IV are much more student friendly than La Jolla. But on the other hand, UCSD definitely has the better CS department and the location allows for easy access to other cities in SoCal and elsewhere. Santa Barbara is somewhat isolated. If it were me I would focus on strength of the program and potential advisors, how much money I was receiving, and overall fit with the dept...location would be secondary.
  5. Are you guys kidding me!?! Seriously. Have you ever been to UCI? I didn't go there, but UCI is hardly 'inland'! It's only a few miles from the coast. Riverside gets hot. Pasadena gets hot. UCI is practically Newport Beach. Look at a map... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&saf ... 1&ct=title
  6. I sent out a similar e-mail to three programs and got very similar responses to yours in every case. One that wasn't quite as positive as yours ended up being a reject after making the shortlist. Another was a waitlist and the third notified me that I made the shortlist and will be hearing from them in the next week or so....so it can end many ways, but I'd say you're at least still under consideration which is a good thing!

Nice post! The college system has a similar effect on grads...It's great because the atmosphere is much more social than the grad scene at most American universities.

    0 for 8

If it's any consolation it seems like you all have been denied from top programs...meaning there's nothing to be ashamed of and it isn't necessarily a sign of things to come. I'm sitting on zero as well, but it's not over 'til it's over!!!
  9. Wow...I'm in the same EXACT boat. Waitlisted at my top choice/best fit and rejected by two programs I just kinda applied to for the sake of applying. I hope this week brings good news for both of us!
  10. Someone just posted an acceptance to Harvard...I'm really curious who it is since I didn't know that Harvard Anth actually admitted people! The results search history yields nothing but rejections. I'm still expecting my rejection letter in the mail, but then again I was expecting it when I applied.
  11. Sorry to hear that...mine should be arriving soon!!! Hopefully you have some other good offers!
  12. Definitely...but it's also like crack...you know it's not good for you, but you just can't keep off of it for too long. My greatest fear used to be rejections across the board. My new fear is being waitlisted everywhere and THEN rejected. Torture.
  13. Basically, if I applied there then they're not contacting 7 departments with no decisions on the board or from what I've heard. Sorry I'm not actually helping...it's a good question though!
  14. My confidence was once sky high. Now...I'm a wreck. I keep asking myself why I applied to some programs that take so few people that I have no realistic shot. Unfortunately, the programs that are the best fit take the fewest people...my safeties are not a good fit. I'm screwed!
  15. Also, anybody want to confess to posting the 3 most recent acceptances (Oregon, Leipzig, and Michigan) in Bio. Anth.?
  16. Whoever mentioned being really nervous because they knew that they were being judged at that very moment...yeah...I know how you feel now!!!
  17. I thought that's what the media is for?
  18. My parents want me to go the most prestigious university that I get accepted to...even if it's not the best in my field. They can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that Harvard is not my top choice and that I'm considering leaving my current university. They much rather pay for me to go somewhere that will enable them to brag to their friends as opposed to getting fully funded at somewhere less prestigious (which is just about everywhere in their eyes). Oh well. What can you do?
  19. I was in the same boat (regarding my thesis advisor), but luckily I later got invited to come along...so I probably won't be able to get that much work done, but at least I can share the misery with my advisor!
  20. Not all is lost, Lizzle. Ask a homeless person if you can give them $20...I'm sure they won't reject you! (If they do then it's all over...start looking for a new career
  21. They're not going to reimburse you anything if you don't go...sounds like it will actually be cheaper to go and network!
  22. Positive thoughts Tonights! Positive thoughts! You'll be receiving your ACCEPTANCE on Monday! Yay!
  23. You're better than UCSD! Don't sweat it...acceptances on the way!
  24. My submit day is July 31st :/ I very well may have to fly back to my current university from wherever I may be for my PhD to defend my thesis.
  25. Personal preference: SD, Seattle, New York, Ann Arbor, Baltimore Ironically, my top choice is in Baltimore.
