oooo...color...welcome monkeyidentity.

I'm still sitting on zero acceptances and rejections too. All I've received is one letter in a small (heart-attack causing) envelope saying that I'm still in the running for one of my programs. I'm like a dog chasing my tail. I check my e-mail hourly...online statuses daily...even though I know that none of it will get me anywhere.

I put a long-term SO before my education a few years ago and it was great for a while...then we broke up...then I regretted making personal life choices for someone no longer in my life. If you're married then it's completely different. Decisions should be joint. If marriage isn't in your near future then I don't see the big deal about leaving that person behind.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one still working on lit review...

I'd guess about 20 people voted. Everyone who voted 'forensic' also likely check Bio. Anth...there was probably also a lot of overlap with 'Applied,' maybe some between Cultural & Medical, and between Biological and Arch. as well...

Using your terminology, I'm an "Oxbridge insider," but Duke is currently one of my top choices. After reading your post, it seems like you are leaning more towards Cambridge. Duke is a very academic university, but it's not the same as Cambridge. Then again, few are. If you are planning on working/teaching in the US then Duke may be worth a second look, but typically it's the strength of your supervisor and/or department that provides prestige and facilitates getting jobs down the line. Personally, I'd want to work with the superstar. If you're torn then choose the one that gives you more money!

Did they tell you that?!? Sorry, I just find it really hard to believe.

"Chancing" people for graduate programs is near impossible, but a 67 is still respectable and Imperial is arguably the best university for technical fields in the UK.

That definitely sounds worse than my dream last night where I was protecting little children from Darth Vader. My lightsaber was the size of a toothbrush so (needless to say) I felt a bit inadequate. I'm not even a Star Wars nerd...maybe it was that Chad Vader youtube video...

We also can't be sure everyone is telling the truth, though there's no reason to lie since it's anonymous. Nonetheless, people still lie.

It's really dependent on the department reading your application...I was just speaking from what I've noticed and heard while studying in the US and UK. 74 is very good and nobody will care what exact GPA it correlates to. It's like the difference between an A and A+.

UK equivalent of a 4.0 would be a very, very high first. 75% or better.

Access to London is very easy. The train takes about 50 minutes and arrives at King's Cross Station. Next door to King's Cross is St. Pancras (where the Eurostar departs). Stansted airport is also quite close (30 min. by train or a bit longer by bus) and the big budget airline fly out of here...so it's actually fairly easy to access most of Europe from Cam. Cost of living is generally on the expensive side, but it really comes down to where you're coming from. The dollar is doing quite well against the pound right now so the UK is reasonable at the moment. Don't expect to eat out often though. Nice meals can be very expensive in comparison to the US. Housing cost depends on a bunch of factors and will likely be determined by which college takes you. Some have nice, large, new rooms that can be pricey...others have old and small...while many have a mix of both. You'll probably end up paying between

Obviously things aren't going to get better over night (if at all), but do you think that the large sums of money earmarked for universities and scientific research may have a beneficial effect on this years admissions? I realize that everything is speculation at this point, but I'm interested in hearing what people think.

post here if one of your programs has started contacting...

You never know, different sub-fields within the same department may send out acceptances/rejects at different times...I know the other person was bio anth and you're not. There's still hope! -
Probably because it was the first one and was known simply as the University of California (no Berkeley) for a while. Unfortunately, the mail already came today and nothing good was in it. I was hoping for a valentine from a grad program, but I guess I'll have to wait!

To answer your question for spoonfeeding: Cal and UC Berkeley are synonymous.
-
Relax. You haven't been rejected until you receive a rejection letter.
-
I just saw that and thought I'd come on the board and find out who it was...Congrats! Any word on funding?

Alleviate. Facilitate. Gradcafe can do it all.

That's what I thought until I was in another country and was mocked for drinking Jack. "it's not real whisky." Ehh, I suppose.

Maybe some ativan while they're at it....I've never taken it, but evidently it does wonders. Ugh...what has the world done to us?

I think that every student that submits an application should get a prescription for the drug of their choice! I'm sure most of us could use some anti-anxiety meds....maybe even anti-psychotics.

Early preparation. Our PhDs take longer than most fields so they're testing us. If we crack under the pressure of waiting for a response then we'll surely crack when we're out doing fieldwork
