  2. You should be able to get a Stafford loan. See: https://secure.staffordloan.com/apply/ Check Non-US, then University of BC will appear in the college name drop down box. As for other non-Federal loans, it depends on the bank. Citibank doesn't do international as far as I know. I know you are able to get a student loan for most Canadian schools through Sallie Mae, but their interest rates are kinda high.
  3. I would definitely contact the program if I were you. Good luck!
  4. Don't give up hope! To all Canadian applicants, you can also track results here.
  5. Wow, sorry to hear that!
  6. Ugh! I know how frustrating that is. That happened to me two years ago, and I ended up securing my apartment two weeks before school started. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, ForeignGuy!
  7. I applied to the Applied Linguistics department at York U in Toronto. The program has a strong focus on SLA and bilingualism. I'm a huge fan of Susan Ehrlich and Peter Avery's research, and since they are both at York U, my decision was a no-brainer. If you're interested, here's a list of the faculty and their research interests: http://www.yorku.ca/...ng/faculty.html
  8. I also only applied to one program, and I can completely empathize with you! My application was due in Feb, and even though it hasn't been that long, I feel like I'm going crazy. I re-read my application materials on a daily basis... Some days I feel like my application was very strong, but most of the time I feel like there's no way I'm getting in. I've also started browsing my school's website and counting how many international students are accepted in every graduate department... and trying to calculate my chances based on the people that have gotten in already. So yeah, it's really a mix of anxiety, bi-polar disorder, and OCD. Some decisions seem so arbitrary ---some people who apply to both top tier programs and safeties end up getting into the top-tier programs and rejected from their safeties! Man, I'm so tired of thinking about these things. I don't have a life anymore. I'm seriously considering taking up drinking/smoking. I'm a big ball of stress!
  9. I'm not looking forward to replying to my LoR writers. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and to make matters worse, they were all so sure I'd get in!
  10. Same here. I just want this to be over.
  11. I haven't heard back either. I'm seeing a lot Canadian results on the board but not a peep from my program. I'm so tired of waiting, but what can we do?
  12. I'm gonna have to second "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. Then again, it's more of a fighting zombies song, a la Shaun of the Dead. My ultimate celebratory song would be "Walking The Dog" by fun.
  13. Vacation, all I ever wanted...

  14. Agreed! I'm an addict too. Can someone to put me out of my misery? Pretty please? (At least I know I'll hear back before March 31st. I'm counting the days...)
  15. I'm also in the same boat. This is my second time applying, and I only applied to one school this season. I'm definitely panicking. If I don't get in this year, I'm done for. I can't move anywhere else, so my options are very limited. I'm sure I'll end up applying again if I get rejected, but I'm definitely gonna take a break -- maybe work for a few years, travel, write, learn a new language, adopt a puppy. I really don't know how I can make my application stronger than it is. It's unbelievably frustrating when your application wasn't good enough even though you gave it your best. You'd think getting into an M.A program would be easy, but apparently not. Most people don't understand how competitive it is... sigh. Sorry for my rant.

Congrats! Check http://www.trivestdev.com/prices.html They have apartments in the Forest Hill/Wychwood area, close to St. Clair W-Eglinton W stations.

Congrats! It might be hard to find something affordable right on College/University, but there are some affordable places farther up north. It really depends on what you are looking for and what your budget is gonna be. I live near St. Clair/Bathurst, so I'm roughly 20 minutes from Queen's Park station by TTC, and I pay about $899/month plus hydro for a one bedroom apartment. I think you'll be fine as long as you are in the downtown core --- it's really easy to get around Toronto if you have easy access (by bus, streetcar, walking distance) to a subway station. So you are looking at anywhere from $500 for a bachelor to $1000 for a one bedroom apartment. Neighborhood-wise, I'd recommend the Annex. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.
  18. I'd go crazy too! I'm still waiting on York U. This weekend is gonna go by so slowly for many of us..
  19. Is winter over yet?

  20. Agreed. As for the weather, don't be fooled by Ontario's mild temperatures! Winter in Ontario is pretty humid so it feels a lot colder than it is. I think the main difference, at least for me, is that Ontario winters feel a lot shorter. In Toronto, you don't get snow until December, and it is pretty much gone by March. In the prairies, winter seems to drag on... You get snow in November (or sometimes as early as October), and it doesn't go away until late March or early April. Calgary is, without a doubt, one of most beautiful cities in Canada. I think it comes down to the kind of lifestyle you are looking for. Are you into big city living, or do you prefer a quiet, smaller, cheaper city? You'd probably never run out of things to do in Calgary. London, on the other hand, might get boring after a few years. But don't forget - London is an amazing place to be doing your research. It's a difficult choice. In Alberta, you are pretty much stuck in Calgary/Edmonton. If you are in Ontario, you are really close to a lot of awesome cities: you can take the VIA to Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, or you can go to Buffalo, Detroit, etc. As Cheryl mentioned, travel can be expensive by train, but Greyhound is pretty cheap. Hell, Toronto-NYC on greyhound is only $90 round-trip. Good luck, and keep us updated!
  21. I hope so too. I'm refreshing the results board every 5 minutes.... I can't take it anymore. And good luck to you as well! Please keep us updated.
  22. I'm also awaiting results from York. Looking at the results board, I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing back soon. It's reading week in Ontario, so I think most adcomms are meeting this week. I applied back in November (the program deadline was Feb 1st) so it has been a excruciatingly long wait. I contacted the program a few weeks ago, and I was told I'd be notified by March 31st at the latest. Fingers crossed.
  23. 23 Age should be irrelevant, but if it did matter, I'd probably be in a good place.
  24. I wish it was as simple as that! This is my second season applying to grad school, and I'm wondering if I'll ever get in! Sara, At this point, there is no way of knowing whether you will get in or not. I know it's hard, but you have to be patient. You applied to a lot of schools, so odds are you will probably get in (unless, letsdoneuro said, you only applied to top 10 schools, or really competitive programs). The fact your advisor dropped the ball is not your fault, so there is nothing you can do about. If you don't get in this year, you will have to try again next year. Since this is your first year applying to grad school, just think of it as a learning experience. And don't forget about your applications once you've submitted them. It's very common for LORs not to arrive on time (or at all), so you have to be on top of that. Also, look at your competition. Check out the stats of other people who have gotten into the programs you applied to. That should have you an idea of where you stand. Good luck!
  25. Best case scenario: I get into the only program I applied to, and live happily ever after. Worst case scenario: I have to apply again next year. Sorry for the straightforwardness.
