Cool topic! I just got my first acceptance today, so I am riding high. Now that I don't have to go out and get a "real" job (whew!), I really want to go to Honduras to scuba dive!!

For me, facebook is the easiest way to tell all the people I know all at once. It's just simple, not conceited. I think if you say "nyah-nyah, I got iiiiin" that might be bad, but Facebook was designed to quickly, efficiently tell your friends what you've been up to.

Hi Ya'll! I guess I'd better start saying "ya'll" now because it looks like I got in!!! I am soooooo relieved. I applied to 10 programs, English with creative emphasis, and was freaking out that I wouldn't get into any of them. To have my first result be an acceptance is beyond belief. Thanks to everybody on the forums--your commiserating has kept me (relatively) sane. Anyways, it was just a basic "congratulations!" email, no specifics about funding or TAships--I'm assuming that stuff is on the way via snail mail. But I'm so, so happy, and I hope it happens for you guys. Never give up. I almost did. I was already looking for a job!

I wouldn't give up hope yet! Way back when, I applied to 4 ph.d. programs and 1 MA program, and I only got into the MA program. Later, I was told MAs are much easier to get into than Ph.D...so don't lose hope!! I wish you the best!

I'm just curious--- you got one acceptance, so isn't there any way you could get a loan to get through that first year, and then get funding for your second year and beyond? Because it seems such a shame to give up because of funding, when you got in somewhere!

I think it's worse now that I'm seeing acceptances on the results board for schools I applied to and in my field. It depresses me, because it makes me think that that's one less chance that I'll get in. Very hard.

You guys are speaking my language. 10 schools, no news. This suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. Next week is supposed to be big, though. Now, how to get through a weekend with nothing to do!!

Congratulations!! This gives me hope. I say, put on loud, happy music and dance around the house when nobody else is home.

I hate it when people tell me I will get in.

I know exactly how you feel. My family and friends just assume I'll get in because I've always done what I set out to do. But the economy and the situation for grad school is completely different now! When I did my MA (in 2000), I was offered funding and TAships--without even having to ask. I never even thought about it. I just took it for granted that that was how grad students paid their way. Now, after being on this board, I see how tough it's gotten in higher education these days. I don't have a plan B either, don't feel bad. -
thanks for the info!

What do you do with rejection/ acceptance letters?
Amalia222 replied to borderlands's topic in Waiting it Out
I toss rejections, but I think if I get an acceptance I may keep it forever....maybe even frame it. -

OMG this thread is depressing the heck outta me. I haven't had ANY acceptances or rejections, but is it weird that I've already been thinking about retaking my GREs? I am seriously down on my chances this year. I feel for the rejects! It is probably going to be me, too. If so, I am in dire straights---no job, no money, no prospects. No grad school= WTF AM I GOING TO DO NOW???? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!
