  2. True. I was speaking specifically of creative writing.
  3. Best de-stress chocolate fix EVER: Freeze a three-musketeers. Open package. Eat while watching The Bachelor. AWESOME!!!
  4. Interesting!!
  5. press on!
  6. nope. and I expect they'll mail the responses all snail-mail, since the application was all paper.
  7. I did the same thing. So the first school I applied to had rougher drafts of personal statements and short stories, and by the time I got to the tenth school everything had changed dramatically! I can only hope that the latter schools will show me more love than the formers!! ;-)
  8. I've been reading the results board a lot (probably too much), and here's my 2 cents: In general, acceptances seem to go out first, followed by wait lists and then last, rejections. Sometimes, schools reject a bunch of people first, the people they know do not meet the minimum qualifications. However, not all schools follow "rules", and therefore, the only rule is that there are no rules! :-) Grad cafe is only a small sampling of the actual applicants, and only a few of those actually report ALL their acceptances and rejections. So, really, there's no need to freak out. Just wait.
  9. Hiya, don't feel bad, I haven't heard a peep from any of my 10 schools yet. I would advise against contacting the schools. They are undoubtably very busy with applications and will not appreciate all the applicants emailing them to ask about their status. Your best best is just to wait and try to get to a netcafe when you can. If you get an acceptance, they give you many weeks to decide to attend, so they won't be in a big rush for a response. I know it sucks, but your best bet is to wait, IMHO.
  10. ugh. I am trying to steel myself for rejection, too. It sucks. But remember--all that matters is that one school accepts you. So keep the candle burning, because all hope is not yet extinguished until the fat lady sings. Or something.
  11. wow, you guys sound so productive. I've tried to write, but I can't seem to focus when my life hangs in the balance. I'll try to find inspiration from you guys to get more done while I wait!!
  12. When I was originally looking into schools, I called and spoke to the graduate coordinator (sorry, don't remember her name). She told me that they get 300-400 applicants every year, and they accept 3-5 people. Which puts the odds at 1%. I have little hope of getting in there, but I'm a Cali girl, so I had to throw one Cali school into my list. It's the only school in California that has the kind of program I want. meh.
  13. LOL I know, right??? I emailed the department because there was conflicting information (I think it was about the transcripts)....the creative writing website wanted one thing and the English department wanted another. In response to my email, I got the same generic "refer to website" crap. And I was thinking-- "I'm an English &%$#ing major. I know how to READ. I READ the website. It did not answer my question. That is why I'm contacting YOU." But of course I let it slide. I saw that thing about "one packet" too. It annoyed me because one of my recommenders is really slow so I had to wait almost 3 weeks for her to send her letter before I could submit the WHOLE packet. grrr. *deep breath*. But it's over now. Best of luck everybody. Maybe we'll all meet at Bingy!
  14. Hmmm. Well, you should just be able to post your results with your name, that way the moderators would know who the troublemaker is and oust them. Also, it would be nice to know who is accepted, so perhaps you could contact them and ask them their stats or for advice, or whatnot. The anonymity of it can be annoying, because sometimes one person will post multiple times about the same school, but you are not sure that it isn't several different people.
  15. I swear, I never knew checking for results could be so entertaining. Now every day there's people cursing each other out, calling each other racists, telling their life stories....WTF? It's a results board. But I have to admit it's pretty funny. Suddenly results has become All My Children for Grad Students.

  17. awesome. loved it!! When seeking distraction, I like: http://www.theonion.com/ (political satire) http://www.nerve.com/news (articles about sex, love, taboo topics) http://armorgames.com/category/puzzle-skill (flash games, a definite way to waste some time)

  19. I was doing fine today combatting the crazy until I had an email from UDenver which said... "We are pleased to inform you--" (gulp) "That your application is currently under review by your department". The crazy came back. Now I can't stop thinking that someone, right now, has my soul in front of them, and a big pair of scissors ready to snip it in two.
  20. ah, math people.
  21. You guys are all awesome. English is the worst, they take a lot longer to reply than the people in the sciences. I'm going crazy too, but I try to hide it. I haven't heard from any school yet, but whenever I see that someone else got a response, I am both happy/relieved--because I think at least no news is good news, and leaves room for hope...
  22. I have spoken to various graduate coordinators, and they made it clear that all admissions decisions are based on what is in your application at the time of review. So if you don't submit something, they don't see it, so they judge you without it.
  23. sorry, ran out of fingers and toes at 20.
  24. I applied to SUNY Binghamton for English. There were two applications for me...the generic one online for the Graduate School, and a second, REALLY intricate one that had to be sent via Interfolio (an online document management system) for the English department. If your department requires Interfolio also, you are basically screwed, because you first have to send all docs to Interfolio (including letters of rec!), and transcripts have to be sent DIRECTLY FROM REGISTRAR (you cannot send them official transcripts, even if they are still sealed---soooo annoying!). Even then, it can take them 1-2 weeks to put up the docs on Interfolio. However, some departments do not require these loopholes, so check the website. Since I'm doing creative writing, I found the application process for Binghamton the most complicated of any of my 10 schools. But it seems like a nice school--small, with not many students admitted, and a nice place to live. I'm hoping (like you) that Binghamton will accept me even if all the other schools don't. I'm praying it's easier to get into than some of my top choices (which have 1%-3% acceptance rates!! gah!!!!). Anyways, best of luck.
  25. Maybe that person heard back sooner because they got the fellowship. I also applied there, and no word yet. I'm not expecting anything for another 2 weeks.
