Amalia222 replied to doozer's topic in Waiting it Out

Will people wait until April 15 for phd programs?
Amalia222 replied to digits2006's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
I feel bad for people on the wait list, but here it is March 12 and I still haven't heard from the majority of my programs. I don't want to accept the one offer I have until I know whether or not I got in anywhere else. I want to make sure I make the right choice, even though my heart is already kind of set on the school I got the acceptance for. I just don't want to jump the gun, and then regret it later. So if the %&*@# schools would hurry up and notify, I could decide already!!!!!! :-) -

GRE Scores good enough?
Amalia222 replied to Brontelover's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I agree with what has been said. Those are decent scores, and stuff like GREs and GPAs are not as heavily weighted in the application process as your statement of purpose, your recommendations, and your fit for the program. -

I had 10 schools, so I know how you feel. I prepared a very organized folder with everything all ready to go for the profs to make it as easy on them as possible. On the top, I had a list of each school (organized by due dates), whether or not the letter was electronic or paper, and whether or not the paper letter needed an accompanying form. I also included the forms (all filled out), and pre-stamped and addressed envelopes for each of the "paper" schools. This stuff was all provided very early on (In september), and then I reminded them frequently about which letters were "coming up" on due dates. It worked out well, but you have to be careful about schools which use an intermediary "third party" service, as it takes longer. So you may even want to tell them an earler due date than the actual, so you are sure to be on time. I made sure to remain in constant contact with my recommenders as well. Good luck!

okay, i've had one response out of ten, but it is taking longer than last year for all my schools, and it is driving me crazy, too. best of luck all!

I'd double-check that you have the right email, or try emailing someone else in the department. They are probably just swamped with applicant inquiries. But then call, it can't hurt. Congrats, by the way!!

I can only give my 2 cents on this, take it or leave it. Let's say you enter and get your ph.d. you'll be 55 or 56 when you graduate. In the increasingly competitive job market in the humanities, few schools (if any) are going to hire someone who is near retirement age. They want to get the most bang for their buck--young, enthusiastic people who are going to stick around for 20 years. Ideally, anyways. Things are changing, of course, and tenure-track positions vanish every year. But if I were on an adcom, I doubt I would accept someone who is 50, for the simple practicality of it. Not to mention that there have been unprecedented numbers of applicants this year. But I am not on an adcom, and so can't speak to what they would do. I would say that someone who is 50 and going to grad school would have to be really amazing, beating out all the younger folks, which would be pretty hard to do, I think. I don't want to rain on your parade, and I certainly don't want to discourage you, if this is what you want to do. Keep trying, if that is the case.
