  1. I'm 26 now, but I'll turn 27 right before I start my MA program and 29 right after. Geez. I graduate from ugrad, work for a few years, go back to school, and then the next thing I know I'll be 30. Time flys.
  2. 36. Wake up at noon. Drink beer till drunk. Watch history channel. Order pizza. Pass out. Wake up. Drink beer. (Only a viable option over a long weekend...but god is it great)
  3. Girlatthehelm, we're applying to programs in the same department at Cornell. It's rare to see others on this board, so I get excited. You should check out cyburbia.org if you haven't already.
  4. How common is it to receive an admission notice over the weekend? I can't help but check my email several hundred times a day even on saturday and sunday despite thinking it's probably fruitless.
  5. I'll second that fenderpete. I'm still in bed reading gradcafe on my blackberry because I can't bring myself to get up. Guess what I did last night...
  6. Both are undoubtedly manly.
  7. I'd wait until Tuesday before you allow panic to set in.
  8. I'm not that fancy (or financially inclined), so I stick to two buck chuck ($2 bottle of charles shaw wine from trader joe's), or miller lite. After many months on the chuck though, I'm at the point where the nasty hangovers aren't worth it. I think this weekend I might purchase an $8 bottle since it is payday Oh, and when I go out drinking it's Jameson and soda, shots of (chilled) Jose Cuervo, and whatever is on tap!
  9. I finally got a taste of what you guys have been going through. Somebody recieved (the first I've heard of so far) an acceptance to one of the programs I applied to (Cornell). I have no idea when they submitted their application, but I have been going nuts since I found out. I mean...the anxiety has been ratcheted up to a level that I didn't know was possible. :x
  10. The Embark schools I've applied to show nothing at all. The Apply Yourself schools have all been different. One said my application has gone under review (on the main page), another will only show whether or not all my materials have been receieved, and another shows nothing at all.
  11. I know! I found a mistake. I capitalized an "It" that should not have been capitalized! Ugh!!
  12. I tweaked my statement of purpose for nearly every school I applied to, and I consider some (much) better than others. I've re-read each one probably 200 times. I even keep a hard copy of my MIT application in my bag at work, and I take it out periodically throughout the day to read it. There are some schools that I applied to (Columbia) where I feel like...what the fu*% was I thinking writing this. Sigh. How often do you go back and re-read your essays?
  13. I feel like a total dunce for asking this, but where is the acceptance/rejection thread that everyone is looking at? I cannot find it for the life of me.
  14. Urban planning, while not under the humanities umbrella, isn't exactly the path to financial freedom haha. Oh, and synthla, how much research experience did you have under your belt prior to applying? I thought the fact that I didn't write an undergrad thesis, plus I never did any research work meant that a PhD in History was pretty much out of the question.
  15. A J.D. to a PhD in History, I'm not surprised by that one bit. Having been a histroy major (and absolutely loving history, sometimes I wonder if I should have taken the PhD route), and briefly experiencing the soul crushing world that is the legal profession.
  16. It's not like you're trying to get your MBA where they actually look for the go-getter types. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I also received an invite to an open house prior to acceptance. Then again, the open house is over a month away...and no offer to pay for any part of the trip.
  17. Let me just say I was/am like the OP. I went to a top 25 ugrad and got a pretty good GPA, but I was very much like the OP. I ended going to law school for one semester, and let me just tell you that the author of this book you're talking about has it 100% CORRECT. If you want to survive graduate school, you must be on time, be involved, never miss class, start your assignments when they are assigned, take meticulous notes, be organized, etc etc. The weeks leading up to grad school for me won't be a haze of alcohol. It will be me getting up at 6am, going to the gym, getting used to keeping a schedule and staying organized. I have an 8-5 job as it is, so it's not like I'm out of control by any means, but I could keep a much tighter schedule.
  18. I'm so neurotic that I'm starting to get anxious because I HAVEN'T had a school acceptance dream. What does that say about me?! Maybe I didn't put forth enough effort!
  19. I read a post on another message board (cyburbia.org) that there are some urban planning programs that have seen a 30% increase in applications. And I'm talking at some really well known schools. Maybe it has something to do with the job market in the housing industry.
  20. I'm jealous of those who can afford to go on long road trips. I live pay check to pay check, so that's pretty much out of the question. What I am thinking about doing though is selling everything I own and living in a foreign country (India, somewhere in Latin America etc) for as long as possible unti school starts. I have a doggie though, so I would need to find someone to watch her for a few months. Easier said than done  Oh, and since I started this whole process I seem to be drinking much much more, so a bottle of champagne doesn't seem too appealing. Something tells me I'll be three sheets to the wind the night I get (IF) my first acceptance anyway.
  21. Oh, and Wharton/Chicago are well known for finance. Yale SOM...not so much at all. I was a b-school prospective for quite awhile (even toured Yale SOM).
  22. Why not Princeton? Or do they not have a PhD program? I've heard going there for finance was like getting a golden ticket to do just about anything you want in finance
  23. Are most of you guys applying Ph.D programs? Do you think the same holds true with regards to funding for MA programs?
  24. I've been doing the casual dating thing for about the last 3-4 months with a girl who moved to town a few days before I met her. She doesn't want anything too serious, so it seemsto be working out. To be honest though, I'm looking forward to being in a place where I can be open to possible serious relationships. I'll be 27 when I start my MA program.
  25. I have a dog, and our normal routine was to go for a 5 mi walk everyday after work. It was a total stress releiver. However as of late I have been unable to complete the walk on a regular basis as being alone with my thoughts for that long usually brings on a crippling panic attack (not joking...I sometimes have to sit down on the curb until it passes). While at home, I usually veg out with wine and music. I love downloading new music. When I have a neurotic episode, sometimes I find myself on craigslist looking at potential apartments in any number of cities that I could end up. Or I scan facebook groups to see what my potential classmates look like. In bed I fantasize about walking on campus for the first time. :|
