  1. AHH! That's so exciting Safferz! So, goldie, STOP BEING SAD AND WAIT maybe your time will come too! I laughed.
  2. Aw, crater, I'm sure you did just fine. But you're right, you won't know until they say yes or no. If the past two years are any indicator, we could be hearing about Notre Dame interviews today or tomorrow. It sucks that I sit in front of a computer all day. Oh well, I will make it through to the weekend!
  3. Oh congrats!! How did it go? Sounds not the best...?
  4. Argh! Since I was at such a small school, I didn't actually quote any of the answers on my Facebook. I did comment that someone used text speak in the essay. I like this Timeline thing for remembering what I have since forgot.
  5. I was a student assistant in undergrad. I got to grade a few things here and there, including an open book map quiz that he had everyone do for Western Civ. You'd be shocked at how wrong people would get things... even will the help of a map in front of them. Someone wrote "atlantic ocean" on the horn of Africa once (granted, the map didn't have Africa completely drawn in since it focused on Europe), but there was nothing more pleasing than writing on it "No, this is Africa." If only I had written down some of the gems people came up with on the reading quizzes. Especially defining predestination.
  6. Well, I've definitely gathered some titles that I need to put on my to-read list, such as City of Laughter. That does sound intriguing to say the least!
  7. Oh no! Condolences to the Yale rejectee who just posted
  8. teachgrad, I wouldn't woryy. As professors, they probably know from reviews that people who say negative things like that are often overblown. I always take reviews (of anything) with a grain of salt, because people who want to complain will take the effort more than people who thought good things. The stuff that gets posted on sites like rate my teacher/professor is ridiculous.
  9. Yeah! I only opened mine a week or two ago, because I wanted in on the googling.
  10. My Google+ page comes up when I search for me (not sure if it would for other people, though) and one of the first updates is from back in August and it says, "Looking up stuff for grad school during work. Must be Wednesday." That shows my drive and dedication, right?
  11. I wish I was being googled! Or maybe I am and they just don't want to go to the fifth page where my Academia.edu AND GoodReads are located. Come on POIs and adcomms, you know you want to see what kind of books I read.
  12. Yeah, but I guess I also mean getting in contact with POIs. It was my intention, but it never came to fruition. I've read on here that it helps, but it isn't a deal breaker!
  13. No I haven't had the time or money to visit any programs. I hope that doesn't bite me. But what can you do! My boyfriend grew up in Minnesota, so he's told me all I need to know (it's cold).
  14. No problem, girl. UMN was one of the few programs that let me know approximately when they would let us know decisions. I'm excited about hearing back from them. I think I would fit well there.
  15. I think the American Studies program is completely different than history. It's more a mix of history and literature. So don't freak me out!
  16. Yayay Congrats AFB! You win with having the first positive result of the season! At least of those who have posted on the board!
  17. If we're just a little bit nuts, then that means most of the people on this website are too. I saw this in the Lit, Rhet and Comp forum. It's just truly the nature of this website to see results being posted and then want some for yourself. So unless you are able to completely forget about this place completely, you'll be a little nuts for a while longer. Or you can just think it's normal and laugh at stuff like the drinking game, because you know it's true.
  18. Yes, they are delightful. But honestly, I am nervous for myself and everyone. The whole purpose of this place is to post results and gauge our chances of what will follow for us. I want y'all to get news, just as much as I want it for myself. One of my conversations with someone last year was pretty much, "So did you get any mail today?" "Nope, nothing, what about you?" It's have the fun (which is also very anxiety-ridden).
  19. CHIME. Your whole response is exactly what I felt, but didn't have the time to put it all into words. (I'm at work and there's no need for me to try and excel. I already have, but this place doesn't deserve the care I take and put into my work. Like crazed said, some people have rotten jobs.) Edit: Again, agreed. This is my second year. The end of last cycle was pretty sucky, so I know what to expect if I get my hopes up. However, I don't care. I really just want an answer so I know if I can be happy for the next few months, or really upset for a week.
  20. My mom's on a Stephen King kick right now. I had one when I was waayyy younger. I read a bunch of his books (can't even remember which at this point) and watched whatever movies were playing on TV. I got myself a Nook Touch for my birthday this past summer, and I have to say it has done wonders for my fun reading. I managed to blaze through the Game of Thrones series. I was hesistant to get one, because I love phsyical books so much, but now I love it. I've decided I'll buy physical books if it's something that would go in my future office. Fun books can definitely be ebooks.
  21. Congrats, iequaljoan! I hope the rest of y'all that applied to NYU hear good news. I don't want y'all having a heart attack because of Yale AND NYU.
  22. Yes, I realize that this is a horribly unoriginal topic, but we need something to spark life into this forum. Plus, I'm always one for good book recommendations. I'm currently reading Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader: North Korea and the Kim Dynasty by Bradley K. Martin. After Kim Jong-Il died, I realized that my knowledge of North Korea was about as much as they potrayed on the 30 Rock episode with Margaret Cho. Since I have an odd fascination with authoritarian dictatorships, I figured it would be the opportune time to read up. I basically googled "best book about the history of North Korea" and came up with this one. While I wouldn't classify this book as the definitive history of North Korea (Martin is a journalist, not a historian), it is keeping me interested. It's 700 some-odd pages and I've still got a ways to go. I also recently finished Double Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. The books are not near as good as the TV show has been. This latest installment of the novels definitely was the worst. It was very anticlimatic and overall just "meh." Now it's time for you to share! What books are you reading? What books do you want to read? For school or for fun? Do you have a Nook/Kindle/other? If you have a GoodReads account and want a friend, PM me! I have one, but am not going post it so those trick adcomms can deny me for my poor taste in books (just kidding, I have amazing taste). Oh, btw, I posted it in the History forum for the purpose of getting all us crazed Historians something else to discuss while we wait. I noticed that the diving thread got moved, so I hope it doesn't happen here!
  23. HOORAY PUPPY! I hope you hear good things! That's something better to look forward to, instead of all this grad school nonsense!
  24. That's such a good idea (the litmus test), but also one that will drive me crazy. Dammit, I know I'm good enough. I just don't want a repeat of last year. I keep swaying between the two extremes, but never in the middle of "Oh, at least I have one decent option."
  25. Yeah, what if they hate everyone they interview the first time (no offense people who got one!)? They'll have to go back for seconds! Oh, and of course congrats to all that have gotten an interview!
