  1. neuropsych76, I had no spam calls after creating a craigslist account. I wouldn't think that would be a problem, they require a phone number as part of their security to (try to) reduce scammers. It would reflect poorly on the organization to allow those numbers out. I would be sure to never place my number in an ad and always use anonymous email when posting an ad. I have used craigslist to rid myself of items too bulky to move for graduate school. I suggest placing a disclaimer at the bottom saying "cash only, local pickup only, no trades". I didn't do this for my first ads and received many scam replies and offers to trade for tattoos.
  2. I still have not heard from GaTech and UCI, but already committed to another school so not too frustrated.
  3. I just looked at PhDComics forum. The first several pages of each sub-forum is drug hawking spam. I assume this is a new problem, because as is the forums seem unusable. Does this have something to do with old and new forums?
  4. Anyone have strange or not so strange study hangups? I must have either Pilot Precise v5 or G2 pens, Without them I feel vaguely dissatisfied and discontent with writing. I lose pens all the time, so I keep G2 pens everywhere (probably 20 floating around) and getting ready for class means making sure I have at least 3 in my bag or backpack. I also insist my notebooks all be of the same type. I am not OCD in any other matters, but these ... just a little.
  5. I found a faculty member with funding for a GRA. The project is a good match with my background. I answered your PM.
  6. I have been in "Action-Dept. Decision Pending" for 4 weeks. Bioinformatics. Just checked no change.
  7. Recently purchased a nook color. Rooted it using a simple procedure taking about half an hour. So it still functions fine as a nook and behaves as an android tablet. Been loading it up with media, everything works very well. Using ezPDF reader for textbooks and papers. Very happy with it so far. Battery life is approx. 10 hours, so a frequent recharges are necessary. Also eliminated my need to purchase a graphing calculator, because found an app emulating a hp 48g+.
  8. My first round of grad school was similar. I had an advisor that was hot and cold. One day praising and the next denigrating. The atmosphere was abusive. After years of this, 3 graduate students left (including me) on the same day. I switched to another advisor, who was great, but outside my field of interest. Because of different research, I basically was starting over research wise. I ended up leaving grad school without a degree. My advice would be find a new advisor, but keep it well within your research interests, and continue on. Don't stay in a toxic environment, but do make sure you make a better choice to switching than I did. After a 12+ year absence, I am returning to pursue a doctorate and very excited about it. I had almost given up hope of ever going back, but if I didn't I think I would have always regretted it. Best of luck.
  9. From my first round of graduate school: 1. having a professor tell the other graduate students in class, "Don't worry about hardcrashxyz, he is like a professor." when talking about the curve. 2. the moments wandering from lab to lab making the friday night plans for dinner with other grad. students. 3. realizing that you hadn't just shucked and jived yourself into the position, but have the knowledge and skills. 4. realizing I had become a master gatherer of foodstuffs at seminars and talks. 5. having an "aha" moment synthesizing knowledge from many disparate learning experiences you wondered if would have any real use. 6. that super excited feeling learning some new and fascinating angle. This nascent round of graduate school: 1. looking at fall class offerings and being excited -or- the "omg, I am interested in more classes and topics than I can possibly take in one semester moment" 2. having funding separate from initial acceptance requiring it's own interviews and being offered a research assistantship. 3. starting to make and execute plans for fall.
  10. Tutoring can be a good way to supplement income. Flexible hours. Cash. Several graduate students in my old department gave plasma. Not a lot of money, but spending cash. Conductive to reading and studying while giving.
  11. Good pastrami from a deli. Although I consider that a treat and limit myself to a few times a year. Most common sandwich -> turkey on wheat.
