  1. I still have not heard from Ohio State or NYU. Assumed rejections?
  2. Hi Magical Realist, First, I love your gradcafe name. Secondly, what phone interview are you talking about? Does NYU have phone interviews? Clearly, I've missed the boat on this information....
  3. NYU results- where are they?
  4. This is definitely true. We will see in time, I suppose. I'm not counting on it.
  5. Well, it turns out that I'm ridiculous. Nothing changed. Who knows, it was probably doing strange things because I had been checking the status too much.
  6. Yikes, it looks like my status may be in the process of being updated. I'm having trouble accessing my status page.
  7. Yeah, hopefully the fact that the results board had one rejection from today doesn't mean that all of them going out today will be rejections. When I called about a week ago, they said they hoped to finish the process up in the next "two" weeks. It would be a pain to have to wait all next week as well.
  8. I'm sitting around expecting NYU notifications this week, too, but where are they? From the results page, it doesn't seem like any acceptances or rejections have gone out yet.
  9. Yeah, agreed. I am graduating from a terminal MA this year at a school with a top PhD program, and so far, I'm getting a lot of positive results from this application round. I have no doubt that being in the MA is what made the difference. Use the MA for all it's worth, and don't listen to what people are saying out there about "second-class citizens." I went through that a couple years ago, and it really doesn't hold up to the test. Try to go to an MA program from a really good school if the opportunity presents itself, though, even if it isn't funded -- I took out loans, but since I'll now be fully funded for six years, my anxieties about that have very much decreased.
  10. That would make a lot of sense. I have heard of people getting straight-out rejected right after the interview, but perhaps, that's unusual. Thanks! This is good news and relieves some stress about the interview.
  11. Hi Gwendolyn, I was invited to the Emory interview, and unfortunately, from the sound of things, it sounds like it's very unlikely that a person who didn't get the invite would be accepted or wait-listed. The email said 18 people were invited, and 7-8 people would be admitted out of that pool (or "out of that pool" was certainly strongly implied). It seems like they plan to wait-list a few of us, accept 7-8, and reject the rest. That's wonderful that you got accepted to Ohio State! I haven't been rejected, but I also haven't been accepted there yet. My app is still being processed. Congratulations!
  12. Thank you! I'm sure you'll also hear good news soon!
  13. Great--thank you! And same here.
  14. Yes, madness lies in that direction.
  15. Thank you! I've been accepted to WashU with an extra fellowship nomination on top of the full funding, and I was invited to the interview at Emory. Out of 18 schools, those are the only two I've heard from thus far, which isn't surprising since I never would have expected to hear from any school so early. But there are bound to be a number of rejections in my near future. While I'd like to believe otherwise, it's always possible that not having been notified yet only means that they haven't finished evaluating our files.
  16. Hi everyone, I applied to Ohio State's English PhD program, which is one of my top choices. I see that many applicants were notified of acceptances and rejections through the website starting this past week and continuing on through today. When I called to ensure my application was being processed (because of a problem I saw on my status page), they said my application was indeed being processed and that the process would be completed within the next two weeks. Does anyone out there have any idea of what it might mean that I haven't gotten an acceptance or rejection yet? (I have a good acceptance with full funding from another program of equal standing already and an interview from another good program as well.)
  17. Definitely not-- was just accepted with a full fellowship at a highly respectable school and got an interview at another one of equal reputation. I had, however, made the effort to submit an article to a journal, and I indicated that on my CV in an "under review" section. During my MA (at a top program), I also attended two conferences. Even PhD students at good schools often don't published until they are writing their dissertations.
  18. Congrats, Tortola23! If you don't mind me asking, what did you do between this year and last? Did you do your MA? I'm just curious because you obviously did very well with your application this year, and I am currently deciding where to do my MA.
  19. The weather is not that bad, I promise. Just leave the state in August, and you'll be fine. I have never met anyone in my life that did not love this city (I've lived here my whole life). I think it really might be impossible. quote name='lyonessrampant' timestamp='1301364958' post='233723'] Sounds like UVa may be a good place then. Best of luck to you! I'm interested in UTA, but I'm a cold weather girl. . .not sure how that whole Austin heat thing would treat me
  20. I was told by several faculty members at the University of Texas at Austin (a top fifteen English program) that if you don't go to a top program you will not get a professorship afterward. So, if you are after that career track, go to the better school. If you do not have in mind to teach in college, it probably will not hurt to go to the lower-ranked school.
  21. Thank you, Lyonessrampant. It occurs to me that we've been floating around on the same GradCafe pages during this application season. Congratulations on your acceptances and waitlist at UT Austin! I actually go to UT Austin now, for my undergrad. If you've never been to Austin, you will not regret being here. In the past, I've passed up undergrad offers from Oxford, Amherst, and Vassar to stay here. But it is time to fly the coop. Like you, I am a more than assertive person and also can hold my own in a verbal argument. But in addition to being assertive, I am aggressive and proud. Those latter character traits make me wonder if my year in MAPH would have any peace. I'd likely switch into my hyper-competitive mode.
  22. Adding to my previous post, DGS at Brown recommended Virginia and said, basically, that it would put me in a good position to get into a top PhD. He commented on the strength of the program itself and the strength of the English department as a whole. That makes three DGS's from top-rated PhD's on the side of Virginia.
