  1. ...o letter o letter. whereTHEF*CKfore.

  2. Congrats!! You're going to love Toronto, even though the rest of Canada seems to hate it.
  3. There's one acceptance on the board from two weeks ago. One rejection, five days ago. Both via email. My inbox: nothing. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.
  4. Hear, hear! I just saw on the results board that one of my programs has started contacting. The lone result on the board is a rejection. I haven't heard anything yet. I suppose I should be grateful that I haven't gotten a rejection, but I haven't gotten an acceptance either. I've got nothing. What does this mean? I emailed the program administrator a full week ago, and nothing yet. Is it overly optimistic to think waitlist at this point, or do they stagger rejections?
  5. Hmmm -- not sure I'm getting this here. Did I imply that I didn't think she was being offensive? If so, please don't misunderstand me -- of course I think she's being offensive, stupid and racist. My point was that I think death threats are kind of an extreme reaction to this video. With people like this, one should educate them, ostracize them... but don't kill them? Anyway, she's probably getting quite an education right now. Even if it's just that you shouldn't put brain farts like that on youtube!
  6. A copy of the video can be found here: News article about response found here: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-ucla-speech-20110319,0,6304016.story Everyone is discussing this besides us. Three quick thoughts that went through my head after watching this video follow. 1) People still talk on their cell phones? Are their thumbs broken from too much texting? Man, the only person who still calls me is my mother and I never answer half the time. I text her back. 2) I don't think it can be argued that she is being insensitive and offensive. I mean, the ignorance shown there is kind of breathtaking, and I don't want to believe that anyone can actually agree with the sentiments shown there. But I'm not sure if death threats -- real ones, not anonymous ones on message boards -- are really warranted for this situation. Especially since they caused her to withdraw from school! If there's anyone who needs a college education -- maybe an anthropology class? Cultural studies? -- it's that girl. 3) I can't believe anyone that young doesn't understand the internet. How fast videos can spread, and the long term consequences. It's suicide on google. Anyone who searches her name will find that video, for probably years to come. The stupidest thing about that video is her apparent thought that there would be no consequences for filming that. A pretty good response video can be found here: Now. Discuss?
  7. I guess its kind of like giving the person more information with which to make their choice...
  8. Hi there. No, not yet. Keeping up hope. Yourself?

  9. I wonder if you can get the DGS on the phone to explain the situation. I've heard about this problem happening, and it seems unfair. Why don't adcomms collectively agree on a date so people aren't in this situation? They do in the States, don't they? Also, I'm surprised people are hearing from Ottawa, because I just got confirmation that I won't be notified with a decision until April. I wrote this in another thread, but this seems incredibly late. (Doesn't appear that I'm on a waitlist.)
  10. Oh, I don't know whether the late notification is because of the lost transcripts -- the email read that they would notify applicants in April. When I first read it, I thought the late date must have meant I was on a wait list or something, but it says "applicants will be notified with a decision in mid to late April" which to me just says they're being absurdly late. Or should I be freaking out?
  11. Argh. I just got an email from U of Ottawa, who recently lost my transcripts. They confirmed they got it, but won't be notifying applicants with a decision until mid to late APRIL. By then my hair will be white from worry.
  12. It can be time. Notifications have been going out for a while, or just starting to. Depending on your program, I'd email this week or the next. An email would be best though, so they can respond at their leisure. Good luck.
  13. When I started this thread, I thought I'd bump it up by writing what I did after I got a rejection letter. Well, today it happened -- unofficially rejected from my second choice school, my first notification. What did I do? I went out to a really expensive dinner -- most expensive place in the city, on top of a tower at sunset-- had even more expensive wine, and then gorged on Mcdonalds, canceling out whatever class I acquired. I am now having cheap wine that cost less than the milk in my fridge... Oh well, it happened, most of us have to live with at least one rejection. I'm hoping it's the last, but I'm bracing myself. Good luck out there, all.
  14. I feel you. Just been unofficially rejected from another Canadian program via email. I emailed to inquire about status, and the email back was not encouraging, to say the least. Now I just have to wait for that small envelope in the mail. Considering just dropping in the fire unopened with the rest of the pieces of my sparkly dreams.
  15. Kingston has 13 prisons? Wow. I only remember one from my field trip in the 8th grade. And remember nothing from my visits to Homecoming weekend first and second year! Good luck on York. Killer school.
  16. Hmm. I suppose this question is directed to grad students than undergrads. I don't think anyone actually cared what UG wore during class, so long as they weren't naked. (There were some people that cut it close though.) As for grad students, I noticed what a few TAs were wearing during my undergrad. One of the more memorable ones wore a suit to class/tutorial regularly. It was a dark blue suit, red tie and white shirt, like a Congressman or a male flight attendant. It looked a little unusual. One of the other more memorable ones regularly wore Tshirts and shorts. Not just during the early fall, during the winter too. We get cold winters here in Canada, and I wondered if he was coming from the gym or something. I have no idea which one of the two was funded by the department. As for the rest of my grad student TAs, I don't remember what they wore regularly, but I still have their essay comments and feedback. This is probably a good thing.
  17. You've been with your former research internship supervisor for five years! That's awesome. Which brings me to... all of the things upthread being said, which I do agree with, I think there's also something to be said for grad student and professor relationships. I've never seen one (but then again I'm a mere grad school hopeful right now) but I think it could really work IF AND ONLY IF the student has graduated. If there's a current professional mentor/mentee relationship going on alongside a romantic relationship, I think it's a trainwreck waiting to happen. (There was actually a lively comment thread going on recently on collegemisery.com regarding this question -- how many professor/student relationships have you actually seen on your campus? Answer: a lot.) Anyway, all hail those who are dating non-academics, but I think one person (not the only one) who can really understand your nerdy quirks is someone in the academe -- a fellow grad student, maybe, or a former professor! Common interest and drive are certainly there, as well as the ability to be off the charts smart but still forget your keys in the fridge. Plus, some of us are attracted to stability and achievement, and some grad students are always going to be looking up to their professor as people who has achieved lofty goals... or maybe that's just me. Am I the only one who gets really turned on at letters before and after names? Mmm.
  18. Uck. No words. Except for the maniacal laughter of the adcomm ringing around the room. Hang in there!
  19. Calling all Canadians! I've seen a few of you around the board and wanted to give us a place to gather. Any Canada specific stories out there? I know a lot of us are still waiting because the April 15th deadline doesn't apply to us (I think) or because Canadian schools just take longer. I don't know why. (Does anybody? Because I'm about to blow my brains out.) Who applied for the OGS, and got it? Or the CGS, and got it? What's the scoop out there about Canadian schools? From rumor and lore, I hear U of T doesn't give much funding to MAs, they call it 'Rye High' for some reason, UBC is awesome except for that incredibly expensive rent, Western is geared to the 18 year old purple wearing frat boy/girl in Ugg boots, and there is/was actually a bar called Jim Bobs there. Queens is where the prison is, and UofA is pushing its way up there in the rankings. McGill? One time a little French girl beat me up for asking what that sign 'sortie' meant. (Side note: I love all of the above schools. Please let me go to at least one of them.) Tell me your Canadian stories while we wait it out! For the record, I have been a Molson cold shot drinker since high school. Small but strong.
  20. I agree that now is the time to go asking, especially in the States. I emailed the program administrator for my top choice, inquiring about my status as he had sent a message that my application had gone to the program admissions committee on Feb. 22nd, and we would be contacted 'soon'. It was March 14th -- he emailed back within 5 minutes saying that no decisions had been made on my application. Oh well. I wonder if it would have been better to email the DGS, but I suppose I can't email for another week. My second choice emailed about a month ago saying we would be contacted after March 10. It's now five excruciating days after that. Since I have a concrete date to go by, I thought I'd wait until this Friday, a week later. This way, if there's no decision STILL, I'll drink. If it's an acceptance, I'll drink! If it's a rejection, I'll drink. Yay for Friday!
  21. What!? They notify outside of business hours? Great. Now I can never go to bed. Seriously?
  22. Hmmm. To you and Epyion, I wouldn't read into this -- I got the same invitation to the Ottawa open house, but I also got an email on the same day saying they had lost my transcripts. Free transportation seems interesting, but I'm not sure how I can be accepted if they don't have my grades. Or "marks", as it were. Maybe Ottawa is just rolling it in this year. Good luck to all the Canadians! Hang in there, our time is coming...
  23. I am so sorry to read this. Best of luck with the rest of them.
  24. It's really professor-specific, so I'm not sure it'll help you. One of them goes running on campus a lot in clothes with school logos everywhere, so I got her another shirt but had one of the fundamental questions of our discipline screen screen printed on it. The other one doesn't have any specific quirks, so I just got him a coffee mug, with one of his favorite lecture sayings printed on it. I was a little over $20 CAD, which is exactly what you should be spending on these little gifties. Otherwise, baked goods always works!
  25. My top choice emailed on Febuary 22, saying my application has been forwarded to the program admissions committee. Decisions out, quote, "soon". I thought about not emailling them to ask at all -- busy people and all -- but this morning I got a tense urgent email from one of my other schools, saying they had somehow lost my transcript, and could I please send another. I'm requesting another, but it could take a week. That's ANOTHER WEEK I'LL BE WAITING. What burns me is that they sent out TWO emails more than a month ago saying my application is complete and has been verified by general admissions. I know the two situations above aren't related, but I'm panicking -- what if my top school also lost my transcript and hasn't called me yet? I may as well call now to find out whether all is OK, so I'm not going to have to wait another week to hear from them either. It's already March 11, people. Canadians take longer to respond, judging from general rumor and the results board, but come on. I want to know what I'm doing next year. If I haven't heard by next week, I'm calling!
