  1. I'll be in Madison this fall too Congrats to all of you! Have you guys already looked for places to live? I'm aiming for the Willy neighborhood cuz I hear it's where the cool kids hang (ie. less undergrads, more grad students). I already have several leads. I'm hoping to sign my lease when I visit in a couple weeks. Are there any ladies on this board who are looking for roommates?
  2. I have been offered admission to UW-Madison, with a 5 year TAship, tuition remission and health insurance. It's guaranteed, so I'm not terribly worried. What I am worried about is that they haven't finalized the numbers. They just said in my letter, these are the numbers for 2010-1011, see the attached numbers for 2011-2012. But in the package they have only included the numbers for 2010-2011. I wonder if this is because of the issues with the budget fiasco... I hope the number doesn't go down. Is anyone else in this boat?
  3. I'm going to UW-Madison in the fall and I already have two good leads for roommates. I have even skyped with some potential roommates and have facebooked both sets. I know it seems early but apparently this is how it goes in Madison. I'm planning a visit in early April and I hope to sign some papers then. It seems like people here are quite wary about using Craigslist. I think it should be fine as long as you cover your bases and don't send money before meeting people. I'm really happy I skyped, it gave me a good idea of the people I might live with. Personally, I prefer to move into a place that already has grad students living there. That way I don't have to worry about furnishing the place all by myself and I'll have people to point me in the right direction as I'm getting to know my new city. Good luck with your moves everyone!
  4. You must MUST check out Papers2 for mac. I gather that since you are planning to get an iPad, that you are a mac person? Seriously, get papers. It's much easier if you go to the website and just check it out but it will basically do everything you need. It organizes all of your papers, book chapters, your own manuscripts, notes, etc. in one convenient place. You can find any paper in your library based on title, journal, author, date and you can even do full-text searches. Papers2 (the first edition did not have this) also has a citation function, which is marvelous. I think this is the third time I have talked about Papers in these forums, they really should start paying me. I have a binder for each of my classes. I try to organize them with those binder tab divider things with sections like assignments, course notes, assigned reading, project, etc. Each of my binders is a different bright colour. It makes me happy to look at them. I definitely have to agree that paper articles are hard to keep track of. Try to get everything in electronic format, even if it means scanning them yourself. I have a paper lab journal but I would consider using an ipad if I had one. Then again, I would be worried about spilling things on it. And ALWAYS back up. In fact, I'm going to go back up right now

    NSERC 2011-2012

Just got the email from the awards guy in our department. No NSERC for me. Apparently there will be a second round of awards offered in May but I'm not holding my breath. Good luck to everyone else!!

  7. Thanks rising_star! Your response was very helpful
  8. I finally received an offer of acceptance with funding from the one and only school I applied to. There is no question that I want to attend here. I applied here because I wanted to work with a particular prof an for some reason (I really do spend quite some time trying to figure this out) he liked me and helped me to get admitted with a less-than-stellar application. It's pretty hard to believe. But I digress. I am planning on visiting the school and city sometime in April. During this time I will probably be staying with someone in his lab. I will probably get a tour of the lab, meet the people, have a meeting with the prof, maybe go for beers? I have no idea!! I need to spend some time sorting out housing as I already have a lead there. My question is: has anyone gone on such a visit? Any suggestions for what I should wear? Anything to look out for? Questions to ask? Anything? Should a take a suitcase full of stuff and put it into storage if I know I will be moving there? Is that crazy?

    Madison, WI

Does anyone here know anything about "City Row Apartments"? After seeing someone on Craigslist looking for a roommate there I went to the website http://www.cityrowapts.com/index.html and it seems that they are for low-income earners. And there is a restriction on the proportion of students allowed in each apartment (so I guess that excludes me from a 1 bedroom). It's all so strange and yet it seems like it is an awesome place to live. I want to live there but with my graduate student stipend I would make too much money to be that lady's roommate. Weird? Yes. So, anyone know anything? What is this mysterious, magical place?
  10. Victoria housing costs are cheaper but the city is kind of boring compared to Vancouver (and Vancouver is not really a party town to begin with). My SO went to UVic for his first year and did not like it. He said that grocery stores closed really early too. But that was a good 10 years ago. UVic and SFU are both smaller than UBC. It all really depends on what you are looking for and the program you're going in to. It's hard to make sweeping general statements beyond that.
  11. East Van is good if you're going to SFU, but not my particular area because it is on the Expo skytrain line (Joyce station). If you are going to go to SFU, you'll need to live near a Millenium line station. Go to translink.ca to see the skytrain lines so you can get an idea. I think the areas around SFU are cheaper for rent than UBC. There are also express buses that go straight to SFU if you don't want to skytrain. But generally you will want to look in northern/east van or north burnaby areas. Good luck
  12. Campers are fantastic, comfortable and in my humble opinion, stylish. They're pricey but really, I can't tell you how comfortable they are.
  13. You need to define "reasonable commuting distance". I live on the edge of Vancouver (just on the border of Vancouver and Burnaby) at a transportation hub. With traffic it takes me around an hour to get to UBC by bus. If you want to live close to campus, ie. Kitsilano, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, Dunbar, the ABSOLUTE cheapest basement suite will be about $500 a month, with roommates. You might be able to find something under $500 if you go to the east side of Vancouver but then you will have a longer commute like me. If you're ok with 45min to 1 hour commutes, you can also consider getting a place in Richmond or Burnaby, near skytrain stations. Good luck
  14. You might also want to consider applying to Canada. It seems to me that the US is not as big on masters programs as Canada is. Also, you have the option of doing a course-based masters first then doing a PhD, if you can't get into a research masters. Good luck

    NSERC 2011-2012

No news is good news! I never imagined my application would have gotten so far. So no matter what happens, I can be happy that I was recommended by my faculty and university. As I always say, expect the worst but hope for the best. Although... that money would be nice
  16. Masters, macbook (a cheap old one The one must have program is papers. And now papers2 is out! And they have cite as you write!!! That means there is no longer a need for endnote, refworks or zotero. Papers2 just came out this week so they are working on a few bugs but I was using it today and even with its flaws, I was bursting with joy. Or maybe it was having coffee for the first time in a few weeks...
  17. I know this is slightly off topic but I think it's super useful. For anyone that is going the mac route, either with macbook or an ipad, you should DEFINITELY invest in getting the program Papers2 (there is a student discount). It is a great program that allows you to store, organize and cite all of your papers. That's a simplification, obviously, but I recommend you check it out. They just came out with Papers2 so they are working out some glitches but the first Papers was great so I'm optimistic about Papers2. Seriously, if you have a mac, check out the free trial. Unfortunately, there is no papers for PC.

    Snail Mail

I hate the snail mail because it takes so long, especially because I live in Canada. I received the rejection about two weeks after it was sent. And to think, the last week before I received it, i was going absolutely insane. Once I received it, it wasn't so bad. And to think, if only I had received it a week or two earlier, I could have saved myself the insanity. On the other hand, I have all my mail sent to my family's place and my sister-in-law read it over the phone for me while I was at dinner with my boyfriend's family. It may be strange but this was actually for the best. Had I read it myself I would have cried and felt sorry for myself. Instead though, I had to maintain my composure long enough that by the time I could have cried, I had actually gotten over it.
  20. This makes me feel better. You're right Kreacher, hope is good. And jordanami, we need to finish our masters. Get on it! Go! I will too! ... after I look at a few more apartment postings.
  21. I have not yet been accepted to the school I want to attend but I just keep looking on craigslist for apartments, as though I had been accepted. This feels very self-destructive and is also keeping me from finishing my masters thesis. Is anyone else out there doing this? How do I stop myself from going crazy? AAAAAAAAHHHHH!

  23. I think it's possible for you to get into grad school with poor grades because that's exactly what I did. Work experience as a lab tech is exactly what got me in. What I would suggest for you is to volunteer or find some other way to get to know a prof at a local school then do a masters with him or her. From there, you can boost your CV as well as your grades then hopefully that will help you to get into a PhD program. I'm currently in the process of applying to do dream research with a great prof at a good university. I'm not sure I'll get in but without my masters I wouldn't have had a chance. Goooood luck!
  24. UNBC is not in Vancouver. Vancouver is a city on the southern coast of British Columbia, which is a large province. UNBC is in the town of Prince George. It's a relatively large town, apparently it has a strong smell to it and it gets cold in the winter. Unfortunately, I have never been to Prince George so I can't say much more about it. You should look it up though. I know several people who went to UNBC and they enjoyed it. It's really great if you are studying Forestry. Good luck!
