  1. Me too! I'll just have turned 29 when I start my Ph.D. next fall. I'm convinced we're like fine wines and better due to our age
  2. CONGRATS TYBALT!!!!! So happy Rochester worked out for you!!!!!
  3. I think you should go for the private school so you don't get all of your degrees from the same place. This will help you network more, which will be useful for jobs later. Besides, you sound like you need some adventure to break up your routine if you've been in the same place for so long Good luck!
  4. All of my emails to Lesser have been ignored as well. It pissed me off enough to accept another offer, though I'm waiting to see if Lesser EVER contacts me again. Bad form UTA. They're a great school, obviously, but let's get over ourselves a bit and reply to a few emails, shall we? Grr. Anyway, rant done. Good luck rge! Congrats again to tortola and, of course, to the first-round admits!
  5. You might want to also post this in the lit forum where you may get some more responses from other CUNY folks. I wouldn't gamble on the CUNY system, personally. They have some great profs, which I think is why they are ranked highly, but I've heard that a lot of their Ph.D. candidates take quite a bit longer (7 or more years) to finish because they are teaching 2 classes, sometimes at different schools (so factor in commute), each semester. I think it generally takes 3 years to get through the coursework alone, opposed to two years at most other programs. That said, if it were my only option, I can't say I wouldn't go. How much do you have to pay for the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition? What would your stipend be for teaching? I do know that it is really common for everyone to get teaching appointments in years 2 and on, but I think a loth of people work other part-time jobs to make ends meet. If you accept, I think you're looking at being pretty well abused while getting your Ph.D., but you'll get your Ph.D., have LOTS of teaching experience, and leave pretty savvy about getting teaching appointments, not to mention have contacts with a ton of respected people in the field. If you decline, you can work on strengthening your application and trying again next year. Maybe apply more widely as well. I applied to 14 schools, some ranked in the 60s by USNWR (if you care about that sort of thing) to be safe this time around. Maybe that would be a better option for you as well? If you got waitlisted at CUNY this year, maybe taking a year and strengthening your application will get you in with the ECF to CUNY next go around or to other schools with better funding packages. This is a tough decision! Best of luck!
  6. Hope it works out Once and Future Grad!
  7. Why, unless you decided to divulge that information, would any potential employer know what schools you got rejected from? Just don't share that information. What matters will be what you accomplished during those 4-6 years getting your Ph.D. and the brand of THAT school that did accept you.
  8. Oh goodness! So much stress. Best of luck and I hope you get good news soon!!!!
  9. Ask your undergrad institution where you have an acceptance to extend the deadline for you to give them an answer.
  10. Is this for an MFA? If so, there's no way I'd go into that much debt. The job field for my field (English lit) is really tough, and from everybody I've talked to, it's WAY tougher for creative folk. Even getting a teaching position is really hard with just an MFA since a lot of creative folk are either getting a Ph.D. in creative writing in place of or after the MFA. I'd take the funded position if it were me. Best of luck whatever you decide!
  11. YES! YES! YES!!!!!
  12. Sure! Congrats on getting in. I hope funding comes through for you!
  13. It may be different in my field, but the answer is it depends. Some schools have standard funding packages, so a waitlisted person who ends up getting in would get the same funding. This is the case in my field with manyl of the private schools, but the schools I was admitted to had a variety of funding packages, and their most desirable applicants get better funding (more money, fewer teaching requirements, fellowships, etc.) than even other admitted applicants. In those cases, people who get in off the waitlist do not get the same funding.
  14. Hey Tybalt! Don't give up hope! I think an early modern spot may yet open up at Maryland. I think one of the early modernists is leaning another direction. Best of luck!!!
  15. Congrats to the admit from the waitlist posted on the results board. Mind sharing your subfield? I'm early modern and would love to meet future classmates! Also, hope the funding situation works out!
  16. Mike was super nice when I was emailing him a lot about my Ph.D. app. I really think you should email him too. Best of luck!
  17. Two months in a row. . . hmm . . . that's a trend that needs to stop
  18. Congrats, tortola!!!! You definitely seemed to want this really badly! I'm so happy for you!
  19. Going to notify U of Utah that I'm not coming. I had a 2-yr fellowship for 15K each year than I will also be declining. I hope that those go to a GC-er!
  20. Sportsnerd, of the 4 of us there, 3 were early modern/medieval (including me) and the other was 19th century, so it looks like the person accepted in your area didn't come, so that could be a good sign! PM me if you get in; I'm more than happy to share what I've learned. Good luck!!!
  21. Hey, sportsnerd! This really isn't good news for you, but I'm pretty certain I'll be accepting a spot at Minnesota in the next day or two. However, there were only four Ph.D. people at the visit, and I think they admitted 8 or 9, so maybe some of those people who weren't there will be declining? I don't know about the other three Ph.D. people who were at the weekend. Best of luck! What's your subfield?
  22. I can't speak to UF, but I do know Duke for one does this also. If all of their first-round offers accept, they'll fund them with what is usually a standard package, though probably admit fewer the next year to make up for the unexpectedly large class. The idea is to get your top, top picks to really consider you. Odds are that 30% will decline for other schools, leaving you with your desired class of 7 people. If more than 3 of the first-round offers decline, than you start pulling from the waitlist. Make sense?
  23. Thanks, Giaour! I'm actually leaning to turning down my UTA waitlist spot as well. I think UM might be the right place for me, but I really appreciate you thinking about all us other waitlisters. I'm so glad to hear that things are working out pretty much perfectly for you. I so prefer happy endings!
  24. Yes, that is amusing Congrats on your other offers as well!
