Not a peep. I can't remember what sub-field I eventually classified myself as, however. I'm also an R alphabetically.
-
Hang on. Has this occured, or are you worried about this occuring? If the former, my deepest condolences - that really sucks! I hear you - I've applied to several programs in the UK, and I'm being driven nuts by the time difference.

...and that spammer's back.

As previously stated, this is my third time at this thing. Most schools keep at least part of your application (I haven't had to resend my undergrad transcripts to some, for example) and the committees know you're reapplying. I know some schools (Columbia and Harvard) put a cap on back-to-back reapplications. I can't really comment on how they're viewed, but it does seem to work out in the end. Also, unpleasant things often grow on one. Yes, I went there. I got one of those from HKU - it seems a pretty standard thing.

This, right here, when it comes down to it, is why we're on this particular thread all day.
-
Not sure if I qualify as a lurker, but I applied to Columbia.
-
Hey, keep the faith! At least you had an interview.
-
Wait... are you telling me Yale makes a tradition out of their Valentine's Day rejections? I thought it was just poor timing when I got mine that day a few years ago.

He's a very cool guy! At that moment, however, I believe I cursed his name...

I got an email a month or two ago from Al Franken with the subject line "This is the email you've been waiting for!" ... No, no it isn't, and right now I don't give a damn about your grand-mother's Pumpkin Pie recipe.

That is the old, traditional way to do it. My professors keep telling me that if I'm not hearing anything it's a good sign.

Congrats TMP! This is my third go-around as well, so I know how it feels - very well deserved! By the by guys, I've heard that the CUNY GC will be making final decisions late this week or next week.

I saw that! I was wondering if they meant "bitchin." There was also a really arrogant one in comp sci to UC Davis a few days ago - "I have 5 publications, plus 3 papers in review. I have done five research-oriented internships in national labs and industry research centers. Did my undergrad in CS at a top-10 school. (This is just a safety school, of course.)"

My congratulations to all those who got news, especially about Northwestern - it's a great program and it was my first choice last year. I find I've entered that weird application mirror-world, where one actually looks forward to the weekends being over, so offices reopen and there is once again the chance of news. Anyone else?

The last British king to personally lead an army into battle was George II, who lead his men at Dettingen during the War of the Austrian Succession in 1743.

Yes, I started conversing with my POI in August. The invite was very odd, I had emailed him to let him know I was fine with the committee's recommendation that I do a one year MPhil before I try for the PhD, and he replied with something like "I think it's time we talk further, what's a good time for you for a phone conversation?" I'm not complaining, but I have to wonder if I would have had an interview if I hadn't emailed him at that point.
-
Actually, yes, they called me. This would make sense. Also, considering the leeway POIs have in supervising, it makes even more.
-
I had a phone interview for Cambridge. It was really just a chat with my POI about my past, current, and potential work. Nerve-wracking in its way, but nothing like the Yale interview described here.

This. You'll never know unless you try.

It was I who started the diving bit, in my own version of the form. I tossed it in there because it's on my resume, to demonstrate a bit of diversity if nothing else. I'm sorry it caused so much ire. I think that the discussion will be extremely helpful to future applicants - it will show that we're all just as much on edge as they are. That said, I'm always glad to know a fellow diver or two, especially those trained in the military. The Sapper course is no joke - that designation is only one of four that allows soldiers to wear a special left shoulder tab, the other three, to provide some context, are the Ranger Tab, The Special Forces Tab, and the Presidents 100 Tab. Combine it with the military trained diving and you have someone who, along with a host of other skills, is I believe qualified to tackle and defuse underwater mines - something I'm pretty sure we can all agree, no matter what our stance on the wars, takes skill and bravery. Now that I've further fanned the flames (for which I hypocritically apologize) I must add that I also recently had a dream akin to LLajax's, where my 1st choice department contacted me and told me that I was only going to be accepted if I improved my handwriting. For those future applicatants combing this topic for advice, I offer the following reading on this: applications make us all crazy. You do this at your peril, only because you want and need to. Finally, on the subject of helping future readers, may I suggest that those who have posted the questionaire quote their own answer and add where they end up going, once they know?

From what I've heard/seen, this is very much the case. I'm guilty of some of that elitist self-deprication/bragging, but I have to say I'm a thousand times prouder of the research, work, and growing I did at my respectable but not overly famous MA school than at my top-of-the-line old world undergrad institution.
-
I applied to the early deadlines at both Oxford and Cambridge (mid November and Oct 1 respectively). I have not heard a thing, nor been interviewed by Oxford. I have been interviewed by Cambridge, but haven't heard anything from them either. Just FYI, I'm in history.
-
Also got the email. I'd say the interview would come relatively late in the process - they really don't have the time to interview everyone who applies to Yale. That said, Yale's prety quick about this process, the first time I applied (when I ended up entering my MA program), I got the rejection on Valentine's Day.
