  1. Hey everyone- I've been looking for places and it seems the majority have baseboard heating. I've heard good and bad things- I've been told the worst it will run is $200 for 1500SF in the dead of winter.. I'll be living in London Ontario (long and cold winters) anyone have any experience with this kind of heating? Thanks!
  2. Seriously though, what's with all the carpeted apartments? I've never seen (online) so many buildings with nasty carpets. I'll be driving so hopefully I find something decent, and by that I mean quiet with some kinda hardwood or at least wood looking floors....sheesh.
  3. WHY ARE ALL THE APARTMENTS IN LONDON CARPETED?????!
  4. I had a terrible experience with an assinine prof in my MA. I had questions regarding an assignment (that was due after the course classes had finished), I tried to contact him to arrange a meeting- no reply. I submitted the paper- a month later I get my Mark via website- B+ (the only B I got) and I had questions. What was my mark on the paper and presentation. No reply. No contact nothing. I emailed, went to his office, called. nada. So I took it up with the program admin- who told me this prof has a bad rep for this sort of thing. It took a couple of weeks but the program director agreed to let me re-submit the assignment and have another prof mark it- however, this was not really helpful, considering my course grade is made of more than one assignment. Also, after I agreed to this I had a hell of a time communicating with the PD about the logistics of this. In the end, I dropped it. Which I regret now. That B+ is just so glaring! Although it didn't stop me from getting scholarships, admission to PhD programs. Had it been the difference between an -A and A maybe I would not have been so upset. Either way, I feel that you paid, you put your energy and dedication into the work and you deserve an explanation of how you were graded and why. and the admin should be aware of faculty that are not living up to their prof duties. JUST BE SURE THAT YOUR REASONS ARE WARRANTED.. .. or else you very well may get a bad rep. I would advise speaking with the prof about your concerns, including the fact that you are thinking about bringing it up with admin before you actually do it. If you can get a hold of them that is.
  5. Got offered admissions to two programs with full funding. School A has a well known, established (maybe the best) program in the field and has a large number of graduate students and faculty. I took my MA and BA at this University (in different programs). So far, they haven't been very helpful or timely with providing info. For example I only just received information on funding yesterday, and still the letter is very (maybe almost intentionally) unclear. The other is a new program (phd started in 2009!), they are extremely helpful and eager to communicate. Had an hour long conversation with the program director who basically told me that they want their phds to become faculty asap. They only have 6 phd students and 10 MAs. Assured me that the program is stable and well backed by the University. Here are my concerns. School A: getting 3 degrees from the same University... competitive (for grants, scholarships and faculty time) School B: program isn't as respected (or known) as school A.... pressure to help build their program two years shorter than School A (heavy course load in the first year) And I have to make a decision by next Monday. Any advice?!!!!!!!???
  6. haha yes..it was a slight exaggeration.
  7. send a card via snail mail ... more meaningful and personal! or if possible drop by their office.
  8. thanks for the responses! My SO works in trades, so he is able to work anywhere really... It's the whole lifestyle that I'm worried about. He works 9-5 and ...well i'll be working 24/7!
  9. *bump* haven't accepted yet, still waiting to hear about funding
  10. yup im skeptical. made it through my MA but PhD is a whole new world of.... incompatability?
  11. Awesome, let us know what happens!
  12. You're waiting on York right? I finally got word last week. After getting nowhere with the coordinator, I contacted the program DIRECTOR- the next day I got an unofficial offer, two days later my online application said "admitted". Contact the director.
  13. accepted off the waitlist yesterday- after contacting the program director!
  14. I've been speaking with a prof whom I'm close with and she really urged me to be pushy. Unless they have told you to wait for a specific date- go above program admins and email/call the director/POI. its freakin may. they're not going to reject you because you want to get in (and want to know/hear about it). Don't be afraid It's your future.
  15. envy. my first choice gave me may 9th and it's not a waitlist. i'll be taking that one.. if it's offered.
  16. wow that's harsh! ya but really hearing you're waitlisted is pretty much the same thing as not hearing at all (at least in my opinion)- i mean really it could go either way.
  17. just got this email. "You are currently on the waitlist if you have not been contacted by our program. Depending on the response from those that have received offers, we will move further along to offer admission to those on the waitlist. I do not have specific time lines. Hope that helps." no, no it does not.
  18. That's exactly how I feel. not nervous not excited - i check my emails / web status once and awhile when I'm procrastinating at work... like now. I know, it was very unexpected. And this program gave me a date that they'll notify me by. but i'm not sitting here on the edge of my seat like before- this process has destroyed the part of my brain responsible for anticipation
  19. im very bitter with one university. I've sent them some emails and I get an auto-reply saying that the program assistant is away. at this point it almost seems like a fake auto-reply (cause seriously when does an autoreply take a day to come back?) are they just avoiding us? why on earth would they not just say "we will notify you in x days/weeks OR no you are not accepted" sheesh. if it is cause they are waiting to gather funding or we’re on some kinda unofficial waitlist just indicate something along those lines. on the plus side, a program I didn't apply to emailed me saying that my (rejected) app from another program landed in their lap and that they want me to apply (yes even this late). So I did and they said they would let me know as soon as my application is processed. I will be taking that offer... if it's made. the program is better. the guaranteed funding is better, I’ve already exchanged several emails with profs and the program chair (and over the long weekend!!!) and that kind of response is very appreciated and attractive. I mean seriously how can one program contact me, review my application and give me a decision all before this other University whose had my app since jan? I'm so over it.
  20. Did anyone here apply to Yorks program?
  21. Ok so the last time I contacted the department was april 1st and they told me my application has been passed on to the admission committee for review... its 20 days later and nada. Should I email or call? At this point im not expecting acceptance but it would be nice to have a official or unofficial rejection so I can get on with it.
  22. Congrats everygirl and mangetout! And you just added a sprinkle of positivity in my otherwise negative outlook
