all but one of the transcripts i sent on 11/8 are still 'incomplete' on the applications. -
Anybody else stuck??
user_name replied to wintergirl's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
can you preview it on amazon? that's what i did for the 1000 page book i was using. even though, more often than not, it wouldn't let me read the text, it still gave me the page number whatever i typed in was on. -
Culture? Texts?

i use a text to analyze culture and history? -
my computer died a few months after i graduated and i lost pretty much everything, so last winter i started my writing sample. 19 sources for 19 pages, though they range from calculus books to early 20th century metaphysics. literary stuff in there too.

shitty shitty websites
user_name replied to user_name's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
i don't think it's an issue of coding and/or website presentation. applying to astronomy programs last year, i came across websites as bad as Heaven's Gate's. it's more that the relevant information isn't posted anywhere on the site. agree with Timshel about taking it to mean something about the program. -
has anyone else noticed how bad and user-unfriendly many grad programs sites are? i feel like you have to search for things like app logins, addresses, instructions, how to pay, required documents, required formats, and pretty much everything that should be laid right out in front of you because 300+ other students have the same questions and are trying to find the answers. just another little thing to add to the stress of applications and make prospective students worry whether they sent everything in right.

DONE. Ugh. Anyone else done?
user_name replied to darjeelingtea16's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
i sent in OSU earlier this week and will send everything due in december by the end of the day. i still don't feel like my SOP and writing sample are perfect, but fuck it, every time i look over it i change little things and it doesn't get anywhere. ever since i've started apps i've felt like i've been stagnating and i just want to get them over with. -
Best/Worst Campus Grub

i'm sure there is a metaphor waiting somewhere in the fact that both (some) universities and prisons contract through sodexo. the three years of undergrad i was vegan was no fun. at least, as a vegetarian, everywhere has pizza. i don't plan to eat much on campus though...it gets pretty expensive and i eat better when i brown bag. -
yay or nay - SOP name drop
user_name replied to user_name's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
he goes into this another time...decaffeinated coffee, any type of sex long as you wear gloves. now if there were a way to make the quote pertain to professors who like marxist theory but aren't marxists... -
congrats. i don't see why the OP is upset about 79%. still sounds good. as for me, with all the money ETS is getting for sending scores (somewhere around 2000% profit for each score report) i don't think i'm going to reward their unethical tactics of intentionally delaying me knowing my score two weeks to milk an extra 12$ out of me.

So a big part of what I plan to study is ideology, so I quote Zizek in my personal statement. Of people who've read it, there has been a yay, a nay, and no comment made. Objections raised were that there is a difference between being theoretically a Marxist and politically, and that I should quote critics, not theorists. He's spoke at a few of the schools I'm applying to, but I'm wondering if there's a greater chance of it negatively affecting my application than positively. Opinions?

a lot of applications ask for other last names you have used. i'm sure it happens a lot.
