There was someone on this forum that had their application rejected at this stage, because they had uploaded a diploma instead of a transcript. The university didn't ask him to correct his mistake, just flat out rejected him. I'm not sure what happened in the end, I know he was working with someone at the university to try to lobby to get him in if he provides the correct transcript. Long story short, it's rare but it can happen

School refusing to reimburse visit costs--help??
ktel replied to dhanson's topic in Interviews and Visits
You might have inadvertently burned a bridge by rejecting them so soon after visiting, and quite early in the decision making process. I hope that's not the case, and they really are working on your cheque (university's are notoriously slow at doing stuff like this) -
There's a pretty large age range in my research group. Many are married with kids. We are all quite friendly, although I have yet to make any close friends (it seems like some of them are closer though). I have played rugby for years and it's completely normal for players to be in the age range of 16-40, and we all get along really well.

School told me I had to accept an offer before April 15 ...
ktel replied to rosekeet's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
Schools can do whatever they want. This "April 15th rule" is not a law, it's a courtesy, and it is evident that many schools do not wish to abide by this. That's up to them, and if you don't like it, perhaps consider not attending that school -
That's a good question. I know Greyhound travels from Toronto to New York City, for example, but I'm not sure if they would ship across the border. They have separate websites for Canadian and American shipping and the websites don't let you enter in a city from the other country.

Why haven't the PhD coordinator responded to my acceptance?
ktel replied to fillyglory's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
If you're really worried about it, send another e-mail on Thursday if they haven't replied. As long as they have the e-mail it should be OK. -

It's only Tuesday, just wait a little longer. Busy time for profs right now. -
I moved from Edmonton to Toronto this summer with my boyfriend. Not quite the same distance, but similar. We shipped boxes on the Greyhound. Cheap but a bit slow, and you need to pack well and in bags because the boxes were a bit mangled afterwards.

It's tough on my back and shoulders. ALL my work is done on the computer, and I sometimes get numbness in my shoulders as a result. Luckily I'm pretty active otherwise but it still sucks.

Just adopted a 4-year-old retired racing Greyhound, pick him up next Friday!

Didn't apply, I'm going into my 2nd year of my Master's and had a CGS-M for my first. I did apply for OGS and already found out about funding from the Alberta government for graduate students studying out of province.

I only applied to 2 schools for my Master's, both Canadian. Luckily I didn't know about this forum back then or I probably would have had a nervous breakdown thinking I should have applied to 20 or something

I wouldn't even mention it, they probably didn't notice. Keep in mind it's the end of the semester for them, everybody is tired and burnt out.

I think an ill family member would certainly be a suitable reason for backing out. You went in with the best intentions, and circumstances got in the way. I would proceed as if you would be able to go there no problem, and if that doesn't work out, I doubt anyone would hold it against you.

Would you really want to be in her shoes? She's young, confused, and probably rushing into a poor decision (it could go well, but the odds are against her). No need to be jealous of a situation you wouldn't want to be in yourself!

poi going on sabbatical your first year in grad school?
ktel replied to svh's topic in Decisions, Decisions
It's a personal decision that depends very much on your circumstances. My advisor is not on sabbatical, but he is the director of the department, so I really only see him once a month. I can work independently and there are a lot of people in my group to help me out. -
I'm getting a Master's in engineering and I know of two marriages that happened within my small department. I met my boyfriend when I was an undergrad, he is also an engineer. It can happen.

I'm not much of a biker, but was biking everywhere when I lived in Germany for a summer. It rained a lot but was still really warm. I would either not wear a rain jacket and get soaked, or wear a rain jacket and sweat to death. There was no winning. I would typically just let myself get a bit wet from the rain and then just let my clothes dry naturally because of the warmth. Some days I would bring a change of clothes.

^ I will agree. I would be very surprised if you were going to be doing high-power simulations and they didn't either give you a good computer or give you access to a cluster/supercomputer.

Many people think I'm crazy, but I am getting a dog soon. My boyfriend has given in and if I promise to walk it in the mornings and read some books about it (we're adopting a retired racing greyhound) we are getting it. I am so excited, I feel like he is my dad making sure I am responsible enough to take care of a dog. My family and his family think we're a bit crazy but I think it will be really good for me, help me with my stress and anxiety. Plus it will make me get out of the house more often, if I don't go to my office at school I swear I spend 2 days straight inside.

School asking where I decided to go...
ktel replied to charlesjacobs's topic in Decisions, Decisions
My schools also asked the same thing, although much later in the process and much more officially (they asked me to fill out a full questionnaire). Just be honest -

Should I pursue a PhD degree? Need yr advice!
ktel replied to gjktc121's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Hey gjktc121, I'm also a mechanical engineer, currently pursuing a Master's in aerospace. I too want to become a professional engineer in relevant industry, so that is why I am pursuing a Master's, not a PhD. Plus I'm in Canada so you have to get a Master's first anyways. I have heard that a PhD can really limit you in terms of career options. I'm pursuing a research-based Master's and am going to attempt to do an internship as part of my program. I also find the idea of doing a PhD and committing 4+ years (and most likely it will be more than 4 years) to be very daunting, as I have yet to really dive into my subject matter. -
What do you mean they already know the results? As in they know because they submitted the rankings? Or OGS has actually contacted them?
