  1. Probably a fake ID. Let's face it, the ETS testing center people are not the brightest crayons in the box...
  2. Yep. Full time lab job + TA-ing + part-time writer and applying to grad school. It can be done for sure. I wish I only had ONE job!
  3. Another question I am interested in is the difference between interviewing at an umbrella program where you do rotations (like most neuro programs) versus interviewing for a lab (like most psych programs). In the latter, you obviously need to click and fit well with your prospective advisor. But in umbrella programs, is the goal in the interview to generally fit well with the department? With 2-3 PIs you see yourself rotating with? I feel like it would be harder to distinguish yourself in this case....
  4. It never ceases to amaze me how coy admissions are -- I guess they have to be, but it's still annoying. Could you not ask that admissions person if they do a second "phase"?
  5. Yes, I did first thing Monday, thanks! Are you attending the interview as well?
  6. I know right? I was surprised too, but I guess not everyone celebrates Christmas. In fact, I know some profs that like the big holidays because it's so quiet in the office *shrugs*.
  7. Ditto.
  8. I am curious to hear more info about this too, though I'm guessing competitive fields like Clinical air on more the side of 5 and Cognitive and developmental is closer to 2-3. Maybe others can add further insight on this? If only more programs stated this info on their website..
  9. Have you heard from NYU psych? It sounds like they have at least begun to review apps because a couple of people got contacted by their POIs....seems pretty early for this program! I really hope my POI is one of the lazy ones/is on vacation and hasn't contacted anyone yet!
  10. Did you apply to CNAP? If so when did your email arrive? I only got a call so far.
  11. Based on the info in the survey, they don't send out invites until well into January...!
  12. Anybody want to claim the Columbia Psych interview?
  13. Duke CNAP call this morning. Interview day February 26th!
  14. Congrats @Tahlain! Can you specify if Berkeley was via email or phone and if it was generic or from POI? I applied as well and anxious to hear back....
  15. Anybody want to claim the Northwestern invites?
  16. Congrats @passenger47! I'm hoping some of the other cog neuro programs start sharing the love, too!
  17. Ugh! So of course today my phone got stolen :/ Excellent timing. Does anyone know if interview invites that occur via phone also send emails? I won't have a replacement for a couple days and it would be ridiculous if I missed out on an interview because I temporarily my lost my phone! :/
  18. Hi Ashley, I'm no expert in your field but I once strongly considered going into clinical/counselling psychology before going into research. Based on your preferences and circumstances, a PhD would be optimal from a financial standpoint because it would be funded in all likelihood, however it would be difficult to be admitted to without considerable research experience. The PsyD is expensive as you noted, plus a lot of my mentors who work as clinical psychologists have mentioned how the PsyD is not looked on very favorably in the job market. This is anecdotal but still something to look into if you were thinking of this option. So it sounds like you're looking at a 1-3 year master's degree. Have you thought about doing a master's in mental health counselling? If you got into one which was APA accredited and that set you up to be qualify for practice, this would probably be the best option -- especially given your strong interest in therapeutic practice!
  19. @passenger47, you're in good company. I can't seem to not check GradCafe even when I actually have stuff to do! Ugh.
  20. My SO is currently in his 5th year of his PhD and has potentially 1-2 years left, and I am currently applying for grad school. The plan is for me to apply widely (though I chose schools in cities that would work for both of us) and then for us to decide together wherever I get options to see which is the best fit for my grad school experience and his postdoc experience. Luckily his field is quite interdisciplinary so there are number of types of labs he could join. Obviously, this means there will be a ~6month-1 year gap between his finishing and my starting but we figure it's doable knowing there is an end-date in sight. I definitely don't know how 5+ years of long distance is an option for anyone!
  21. @jzhan118 It seems so! I also applied http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=northwestern+neuroscience&t=a&o=d
  22. I don't know for sure, but according to previous year's trends it's around mid-December!
