  1. Hey hey, I am a current student, feel free to PM with questions! Also, yes, invites should be going out very soon if they haven't already.
  2. Hey all, current 1st year in the Integrative Neuro program (Psych Dept) at UChicago. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the program. Best of luck!!
  3. I mean, someone else might be able to provide a more informed reply as I don't know much about this subfield, but generally speaking departments usually don't invest completely in one subfield. Sometimes you'll find some departments that lean towards one type of subfield (e.g. visual cognition/psychophysics) more than anything else (but with other methods/interests as well) but I haven't heard of a WHOLE department being dedicated completely to one subfield, especially one that is so niche.
  4. What methods are you interested in? Do you just want to do wet-lab stuff? Because depending on the methods you are interested in you could apply to a range of different types of programs in different departments such as psychology and umbrella bio programs. Although this is a relatively niche subfield so I doubt you'll find many schools that have multiple faculty members working on this specifically. As long as you have 1 POI and a couple others that you could see being on your dissertation committee that's all you need.
  5. So I faced a similar dilemma and decided that there were certain things I didn't want to let go, including a large flatscreen TV, an expensive mattress and a boatload of kitchenware. I opted for UPack, which drops a pod at your house, you load it, and then they drive it for you to your destination. It was pretty much the same price as renting a UHaul across state lines plus I don't have to drive it. So there's a winning combo. Now, this hasn't happened yet so it COULD be a total disaster, but people I've talked to seemed to have a good experience. Note, I'm not sure if this service is available internationally, but it might be worth looking into.
  6. I'm not sure this is true. Nowadays you have the option of sending 1 set of scores or many. When I ordered a set of scores for myself, they only provided the info pertinent to that test date. Also note: I took it 5 times, got into a number of PhD programs on my last set of scores. If you are a good candidate, I don't think the number of times you take the GRE is going to stop you from getting admitted.
  7. I'm about to withdraw my housing application too -- also found a better option on the Marketplace!
  8. I agree with another_time. Your GRE scores are good, I don't see why you wouldn't have a solid shot at interviews! For the record, my stats were lower than yours and I got an interview at Duke's CNAP program. I'm also international. Best of luck!
  9. Woo-hoo! Congrats @WillComeTrue! Where you heading?! Best of luck!
  10. Eh, I mean I didn't really learn anything I didn't know from reading the website. I guess I learned that it was very competitive! Ha. No pictures of the rooms :/ You can find some pictures by searching them on Google Image but that's about it. I think it's funny that they don't show pics of rooms but they ALWAYS show pictures of the laundry rooms and bike storage facilities. Clearly very important to know what those look like...
  11. I "attended" the grad student housing webinar earlier this week and the people giving the presentation stressed it was "extremely competitive" and that we should also keep our eye open for other options :/ So yeah I don't know how true that is or if they are just covering their basis but...there you have it!
  12. The portal I am referring to is simply the page you log into to accept the offer/view your application etc, nothing new. Within a few days of accepting the offer a tab appeared on that page asking to fill out some info to apply for the F1 or J1 (you can chose which is best depending on your situation). I'm not sure if this is division-specific or not but it might be worth shooting your department coordinator an email. Can't hurt!
  13. Hi @pax6pax6 I am also Canadian and am going through the visa process (I applied for F1), though I've been in the U.S. for a few years already. I filled out all the forms on the application portal late last week and today I received confirmation that they have all the necessary info and they have forwarded it to the international office. So far it's been pretty straightforward!
  14. Thanks, I hope so too! And yes, fingers crossed about the winter. To be fair, Chicago is no picnic either. Fingers crossed for us both!
  15. Yeah, I applied for grad housing too but apparently it's super duper competitive and thus not guaranteed :/ Either way I will have to sign the lease without having seen the place! I hope you're stocking up on winter clothes for those fun Canadian winters
  16. Congrats @lovemc!! McGill is awesome, I visited there a couple years ago on a trip and the campus is beautiful. How are y'all finding housing? I'm realizing I am going to have to sign a lease without actually having seen the apartment. Slightly nerve-wracking.
  17. I know, @FeelTheBern! It definitely is. I'm already freaking out about housing and moving logistics! Ooh I want to know who's in my cohort! lol, I'm pretty sure my dept would think I'm a stalker if I asked for names...
  18. Hey all, so given this application season is officially over (for most of us, anyway), I thought I'd send a quick shout out to say goodbye and congrats to everyone who got offers, and good luck to those in it for Fall 2017! As a curiosity note, where are you ending up @St0chastic, @lovemc, @overdetermination & @Tahlain?! (Sorry if I left anyone out!) Here's to doing awesome things in our respective programs P.S: if anyone is attending UChicago Psych PhD this fall, PM me!

Can anyone attest to the "competitiveness" of the UChicago grad housing? I sat in on the UChicago-run webinar the other day and the people were warning that the grad housing is "super super competitive" and that we should strongly consider other options. This was a little surprising given the deadline to accept the offer of admissions just passed... Is this really the case for people who applied relatively early (e.g. beginning of April)?

I heard for the HP area basically all the residential buildings are managed either by UChicago housing or by MAC. If this is true, then it would make sense to go with UChicago housing...?
  21. @wootar, sorry to hear your last waitlist did not work out, but happy to hear you are looking forward to the future! I only got in on my 2nd cycle and I'm so glad I didn't give up. Hang in there!
  22. @vandemataram, it depends on the program. Usually funded PhD programs don't require deposits, but most Master's programs do, as far as I am aware.
  23. @RCtheSS, from what I understand we shouldn't expect to hear back until ~1 month before our requested move-in date...which in my case is a while! Def post here if you hear sooner though, haha.
