  1. Immediately, a rusty axe hurtled through the air towards him, but he swiftly avoided it, his embedded Jungian collective-subconscious-derived ninja instincts seizing control over his fast-twitch muscles.
  2. they're not done accepting/rejecting. I just sent them an updated transcript after they said it was ok.
  3. "wud tht b enough to get an admission in a good university.." Depends on your field, but probably. But the GRE isn't everything. It's perhaps the least important thing. "plzz help and provide some suggestions for universities for MS in CS in spring 2013....." Depends in what kind of Comp Sci. People here are very willing to help, but you have to be specific. Also, you should look at old threads for information.
  4. I think the anxiety is ultimately self-imposed. This isn't real suffering we are experiencing---at least not suffering enough that it's worth you possibly giving up a few thousand dollars in order to quell it.
  5. I'm not specializing in this, but I do know that UChicago has a tremendous Buddhist scholar in Steven Collins. Great teacher, too.
  6. So does that mean that everyone else is rejected? Or are there some possible waitlisters left?
  7. ^Perhaps the only time in our lives that we'll be anxiously awaiting the arrival of every new Monday
  8. Generally, it'd be best to see what schools will offer. You never know if a program will jump out of its shoes and wanna give you a ton of money. That said, if you are 100% certain that you 1) will not go there and 2) will not be able to leverage some of these offers against your top choices in order to get more money and stuff like that, then you could e-mail and withdraw your apps. Concerning "slots"---all these schools have waiting lists anyways, so once you ultimately reject them, your spot will go to the next person. So, in sum, I don't really see the benefit. Not sure how ethics figures into this given that you're dealing with monolithic institutions that waste more money than you'll likely ever make in your life.
  9. I find that if I explain that linguists do the work that makes speech-to-text software and automated phone systems work, they get that it's a sciency+technical thing. Try that.
  10. Nothing positive can come of it. Only negative things. You will know the results soon enough. Besides, they have other stuff to do.
  11. wow, there are so many problems with the above, I don't even know where to begin. keep pushing summer_reader. I dunno where you've looked, but the CUNY Graduate Center has great PhD progs in a lot of fields and is often very open for older students.
  12. Do you think that most committees have this democratic structure? I always assumed that each accepted student had to be approved by all members of a committee, collectivist style. If indeed democratic, it would be great to be able to know which profs voted against us so as to avoid wasting them with them upon enrolling there.
  13. What if they all accept me but no one gives me any money?! ON PURPOSE?!
  14. My mom was pretty tickled when I told her I'd be "Dr. [surname]."
  15. congrats Enzian! especially on having the fortitude to apply despite some "weaker" number stats. what matters is the ideas! good for you!
  16. Congrats Ivandub!! ...now to go to my email and refresh constantly
  17. ^interesting observations. So he's either a "law enforcement officer" (fed) or conducting a study.
  18. Committee member No. 1: Sooo.... he's an ***rchist...? *intense laughter from everyone* then.... *silence* Commitee Member No. 2: Ms. [secretary], please have our people forward this application to the department of homeland security. [ ]
  19. I tend to buy tofu, gluten, seitan/mock duck, tempeh, etc from asian communities where it's always cheaper, homemade, and fresher. Go to your local chinatown or asian-owned grocery. Veganism doesn't require a lot of money (eg. buddhist monks invented seitan), but companies definitely are trying to take advantage of the ignorance of trend-followers in the upper middle class. Btw, daiya, the fake cheese used in vegan pizza, is HORRIBLE for your health. It's just super-compressed oil. Eating real cheese is healthier, amazingly enough. I wouldn't advise anyone eat that stuff. My wife and I like to make our own veg pizza though, and we use hummus as the "cheese." Once it's baked, it has a real cheesy flavor and is obviously way better for you.
  20. ^oh yeah, at Columbia it should be no problem. Washington Heights and parts of Harlem should have plenty of cheap vegetable markets
  21. taught that to my highschool grammar students this year, too. (+1 for vegans) though, I thought it was the primary contributor? wow, the gregorian calendar is a mess.
