Don't Know If I'm Good Enough
MSWPortlandState replied to jarrodthomas's topic in Social Workers Forum
Yes you have a chance of getting into a program. You have relatable experience and skills to be able to demonstrate to a prospective program that you are a good fit for social work. I had a low GPA in college, transferred twice and finally graduated with 3.02. I got into an MSW program!!! It always depends on how you write your personal statement, and that you demonstrate your core values and how that relates to social work. Good luck!!- 3 replies

Hello!! I would say your concentration is important only in that you get tailored training/classes with regards to that population. However, as a hiring manager, I paid more attention to prior job experience more than anything. If you have transferable skills as well as specific training geared towards whatever job you are applying for, then that's all that matters. It might help to connect how your prior job/concentration connects to the job you are applying in the cover letter. Hope that helps!

Fall 2018 MSW Application Preparation
MSWPortlandState replied to MekaelaNoel's topic in Social Workers Forum
Hello Everyone!! Here are my thoughts: 1. Some MSW programs accept applications on a "rolling basis". This means that they start reviewing the applications as they are received, rather than waiting until the deadline to read all the applications. I always sent in my application as soon as possible (i.e. within a month of the application becoming available). It's a lot of work, but well worth ensuring your application gets reviewed and is a priority. 2. I think the best angle to use for your personal statements is to demonstrate personal growth, critical self-reflection and an understanding of the NASW core values. If you can demonstrate these concepts, you will have a high chance of getting accepted. Personally, I demonstrated how dealing with a client's death helped me to develop a deeper understanding of boundaries, as well as being able to identify my triggers and learned how to cope and engage in self-care. I discussed how my relationship with this client allowed me to practice advocacy, human relationships, dignity, etc. 3. I did mention my ultimate interest (which was working in trauma) and connected it to my current work in homeless care. I think you should discuss what you know, and if your population of interest is different, be able to demonstrate how your current skills can be relatable. Or discuss areas of growth. Good luck!!!! -
CSUDH MSW '17-'19 cohort
MSWPortlandState replied to chasingmydreams09's topic in Social Workers Forum
@chasingmydreams09 I just finished all my classes, except summer school. I'll be receiving a draft of my classes for Portland by end of this week to see what classes I'll be taking. I transferred because PSU was my dream school, and due to several reasons, I could not attend last year. So I applied, and got in, and decided it was a sign! So now I am leaving!! I have a few classmates in GASW, and they love it! It really is a great program! Good luck! -

Hello! I am actually current at CSUDH as a part-time student. I am leaving, however, to attend Portland State. It's a great school, and if you have the opportunity you have to take the professor "Mo Sapiga". He is the best! Good luck, and you will love it! -

I am actually currently in an MSW program here in California, but I applied as a transfer student. Soo happy I got accepted. Is anyone else here going to attend PSU?
