I am also interested in immigrant adaptation, but especially as it relates to religion and the transmission of cultural capital. I'd like to study how immigrants send ideas, especially religious ideas, to their home countries. Lately, I've been doing a little bit of network analysis at work. It's a very cool process and I think that it could be applied in some really interesting ways, especially for those of us who are interested in immigration. Finally, I don't know if you are a US citizen or resident, but if you are, once you're in school you should look at ASA's minority fellowship program. They like to fund people who are doing research related to minorities and health (esp. mental health). If you are interested send me PM and I can tell you more about it.

Anyone going to their open house?

I emailed them last week to ask when decisions would be announced and they said that no later than April 1st. Not very helpful but that's all I know right now.

I feel like I have been getting paid for checking thegradcafe.com. For the past 2 months I have spent a significant amount of my work time here. At least I have an acceptance right now, still... all I do is think about grad school, read about grad shool, and check this forum. I feel like this is now an integral part of my job.

How about doing a master's in Sociology or a Master's in Social Science? It is usually easier to get accepted, and you can not only gain experience, but also some good recommendations.

I haven't received the official letter, but they told me that the best time to visit is March 5th. oh, and they don't have any financial support for people who want to go up and visit. it sucks, but i understand. I'm still pretty excited to go up there.

Hey guys, I just wanted to point out that the only acceptance I've gotten so far came on a Saturday. But by all means, enjoy your weekend. do something fun. don't do what i do and sit in front of the computer hitting "refresh" on my email.

Did anyone else get invited to visit in March?

Mine isn't until mid march. The letter said I am a finalist for admission. According the letter they're flying finalists in for an interview and campus visit to get to know us better before making any decisions.

I just got a letter from the DGS saying I'm a finalist and they'd like to meet with me. I'm going up there March 17-19 to tour the campus, meet with faculty, interview, etc. This is awesome, I hope other got the same letter too.

Is it a phone interview or an in person interview? I'm just jealous I haven't heard anything from them.

I feel lucky because I have one acceptance already. However, I am still waiting to hear from 4 other schools. Normally I check this site (and my applications) obsessively. But since Saturday, I've been stuck at home because of the stupid snow storms in Maryland. The combination of being bored at home and waiting to hear from schools is not something I would recommend to anyone. It looks like I am going to be stuck in here for the rest of the week. I should watch the Shining or something to feel good about my self. I hope no one else is in the same situation.
