Dang, that sucks about the fake scholarship. But you are still in the running for Child Welfare, no fear! No news is good news for now. I also got 3k/semester. It's really nothing, but I hope to apply to some more scholarships that they apparently offer in September. For one, NO! about the Special Programs!! I know 2 people in the JCLP special program that did not hear until early April. Just remember how recently some people turned in their apps, March 1st. And Michigan even accepts more after that. I am pretty sure the Special programs try their best to get a good idea of the complete applicant pool before handing out acceptances. I got my rejection from the Global program only three days after my admission's decision. So I would say no news is good news, for real. Second, I don't think that's a weird think to ask Definitely everything with money gets awkward, but they understand. I need to muster up the time/courage to ask about the possibility of in-state tuition for me...you'd think since I've lived here for so long now that ~maybe~ they'd consider it? Also, I do think second year aid can be more generous. Plus, I heard UMich starts offering way more applications to other scholarships in September, so I am banking on those a bit!

Hmm, well I went with Michigan because other schools are taking too long, I have already gone to this school for four years and it has really become my home, and I'm hoping to get in-state tuition by next year...somehow. I visited U Chicago for the millionth time and still wasn't feeling it. It's less about the program itself - I actually think I would like Chicago's program the most. But everything else about it doesn't feel right. I just don't see myself living there...or perhaps I am too afraid to make a big change like that right now. I feel like me being happy is the most important thing in getting through grad school, and living in a place where I know I love and will be comfortable equals more happiness, hopefully Another reason is because I already have a bunch of professional connections here, so that may help me in the long run. Plus, Ann Arbor is a great place for my focus in mental health since I want to work with people around my age. Even though Boston University's tuition is way, way better and everything for me, I am deciding against there because living in Boston is expensive and the other two schools I have been accepted to will are "objectively" better (higher ranked and stuff), and I think better for someone with my specific interests. It's SO hard for me to say no to B.U though since I've had a place in my heart for the university and the city before I even knew about U Mich or U Chicago, way back when. ALSO, there is my boyfriend, who may or may not be living here next year...but it's way more likely he will be here than Chicago or Boston. At this point, finances made no difference between Chicago and UMich (other than the potential in-state tuition) since they both rounded out costing almost exactly the same after scholarships. So if I do hear from a school that gives me lots and lots of $$$ I might change my mind.... Hope this helps you, though I know it's a bit specific to my own situation!

Even though I doubt this is it - I'm sure they're just moving slowly with your app (maybe even because they are considering you for a special scholarship), maybe something else with your app is not up to par, like your essays and letters of rec, since those really matter too. Having 850 hours of experience is WAY more than I and I think a lot of people getting into good schools have, so I doubt that's the issue. Also, maybe it is just something with those particular schools weighing gpa not highly, because I know plenty of others do.

I have not heard from most programs I applied to close to/on the final deadline. Only one so far has been B.U, but the other two schools I heard from I applied to way way way in advance, and even then it took a while. I wouldn't worry too much, these things take time, though I know it is very frustrating.

I'm 99% sure I am going to Michigan Technically accepted there. It would have to take a nearly full scholarship somewhere else for me to change my mind, but I doubt that will happen. I have already started to seriously check out housing in AA too so if I sign a lease then I definitely ain't changing my mind! So annoyed with how long other schools are taking, though. I have pretty much stopped caring about checking my mail and inbox every morning like I used to, lol.

Also, I have a feeling that if you got into UPENN, WUSTL and U Chicago you will end up getting accepted to MI

Kristi, I would recommend asking U Chicago for an extension if you didn't do that already. I wish I had. I e-mailed them this weekend about how I had to rescind my acceptance and they have not gotten back to me about it yet, which makes me nervous. And I felt pretty bad having to do that in the first place too =/ Maybe just ask if you can wait until April 1st or so because you are waiting on other admissions decisions, but be sure to ask that this will not influence your fin. aid. negatively. If so, then you should go ahead and accept.

Gah, this is a very good point. A big part of me feels like I should/need to experience a new place. But after living in Ann Arbor I've become so comfortable with the college town environment. Something about Ann Arbor makes me so happy and at home...whereas I'm nervous I'll feel out of place in Chicago. Which might be good for me!! And I do love Chicago and Hyde Park and everything, too. Just less homey haha. Thanks for your advice!!! Oh man, so true about UM Med System. Beyond that there are even more opportunities in Ann Arbor, some of which I already have connections with, so that's a plus too. Part of why I have been teeter-tottering is actually because of my s/o...He applied to law school and is still figuring out what to do...got waitlisted at Michigan which is a bummer. It's silly, maybe, but I also really want to do what I can to keep our relationship going. It's more likely, but not definite, that going to Michigan would be best for us...but who knows. He doesn't have to make up his mind until April 15th, like most people, hah! Thanks so much for your advice. I truly do need what's best for me... my gut tells me Michigan, but I worry my gut is wrong sometimes ;D Hahaha! I want us to be friends too, for real. My heart is saying Michigan, really. I just visited U Chicago yesterday, and while there are so many things I love about it, I have become such a Michigander...I love it there so much. I love Chicago too, but it'd be such a huge change. I'm pretty dang sure I am going to send my rescinding to Chicago and accept Michigan on Monday. Speaking of which, did you rescind Baltimore yet? I'm so unsure of how to go about doing this... THANKS ALL FOR YOUR RESPONSES! Very helpful, and I think I have made a decision <3

Thanks! I submitted on 1/15 as well, and my app was listed as complete on 2/07. Maybe that means you'll hear by next week! Best of luck

Just got into Boston University ^.^ 9,000 scholarship plus 20,500 in loans. Basically covers the complete cost. I LOVE Boston, and B.U so, so much but I don't know if it's worth choosing over Michigan, though it would be slightly less expensive. Commence even greater confusion...

Rjrose, I still haven't heard from Columbia, however I submitted on the deadline so I guess no surprise. Still, it sounds like a lot of people who end up hearing a bit later end up getting really good scholarships, so perhaps the wait is just because fin aid is thinking of giving you good money!

Sweet! Well, if you want to live very close to the SSW, you should live on central near the major streets South University Ave and State St. But both of those 1) are pretty expensive because of their proximity to central campus and 2) more undergrad oriented. I live right by the SSW now, and while it's been great for undergrad, if I come back next year I'm thinking of living further off campus, however mostly so I can have a change since I've managed to live on the same street all four years! Some really great areas for grad students is anywhere in "Kerrytown", which is the super lovely, historical neighborhood in Ann Arbor. It's a bit more of a hike to Central Campus and the SSW, but still isn't too bad. It's about a 15-20 min. walk vs. a 5-10 min. one. It's often a bit cheaper around there too. Another plus to Kerrytown is that you have everything you need right there - Shops, world-famous deli's (for real!), the farmer's market, and two local, small grocery stores. I always have to use a car to get groceries from where I live now, it would be sooo nice to just walk in and out I've been looking at some apt. complexes that are less student oriented and more "family", just because they look super nice and are right near bus stops, like The Ponds at Georgetown, yet are quite cheap. For places like this, you could drive, bike in good weather, or take a local bus called "The Ride". It is free for UM students which is nice! I am also considering moving nearer to North Campus, which is not close to the SSW either, but is cheaper, quieter, and has a lot of pretty nature. Plus the bus situation would be very easy since I'm already pretty familiar with the Michigan Blue Busses (you will recognize these right away when you come visit!) So I guess all in all - there's no one cheapest and best place to live since there are so many options around here!! Also, if you want an amazing location, amazing building, and decent for grad students, but are willing to pay a tad extra, I'd go for 411 Lofts. I highly advise against any of the other "luxury" apt's in Ann Arbor 'cause they're bursting with undergrads that, well, are somewhat annoying. 411 Lofts is super great though and it's another place I may live! Hope this helps Edit: Oh yeah - on campus housing for grad students is a little non-existent. You could live in "Northwood" on North Campus, which are campus owned apt buildings, but you could find way better for the same price. The thing with Ann Arbor is that so much housing, even though it's technically considered "off campus" is still super close to campus buildings. For instance, my house is just across the street from the Business School and a dorm called East Quad, but still technically off campus!

Thank you SO much, Allport. All very good and helpful to hear. Are you applying for a PhD in social/personality now? That was my first (of several) plans for post-grad, but then I decided I am not quite ready for a PhD yet haha.

Allport! Thanks so very much for your help! I have a few questions right now - 1) Are you happy with your decision? Do you ever regret it or wonder if somewhere else may have been better? 2) Are they accommodating with helping someone who cannot drive find a nearby field work position? 3) Do most people qualify for work-study? And if so, what kinds of jobs do they get? 4) Last, how probable do you think it would be for me to find a job in Ann Arbor for about 2 years after I graduate with the MSW and get my LCSW? (like, at CAPS, the Depression Center, V.A, UM hospital, etc) ? THANKS!

The financial aid notice calls it the "SSW MI Opportunity Grant". So yeah, just a grant. I'm guessing they will start going over work-study and loan stuff once I accept admission? I hope so hahah.

Just got my financial aid notice. 6k/year. Not nearly as much as I need, but it's something! ...Gah I just really need to get in-state residency here, then I'd be set haha. I don't know if it is possible or if I'd seem dumb for asking them though...
