  1. Thanks for the help, all. I think I am just going to go ahead and do this. Sighhh
  2. Hi everyone, I was admitted to U Chicago's MSW program a few weeks ago. I am super excited about this prospect, however I am still waiting to hear from 7 other schools. Problem is - they want my admission decision this Wednesday, the 15th. I heard it is very iffy to ask for an extension on your decision because while the school is not free to take away your acceptance, they are free to take away funding. And I can't have that happen. I doubt I will find out enough by Wednesday from other schools to decide either way, so I was planning on going ahead and accepting my admission, with plans to potentially rescind it later (but perhaps not, too!). My question is - is this an unwise thing to do? How does one go about rescinding an enrollment, anyway? Any experience with this, advice, etc. is very welcome. I am kind of freaking out right now. Note: I am cross-posting this from the "Decisions, Decisions" forum. Hope that is okay. I know ya'll on the trusty Social Work forum are always helpful, too!

  4. I really hope it is possible. I plan on getting a part-time work-study job, but then again I don't want to overburden myself. =/
  5. I'm not sure, but I really think for any prospective MSW's, considering the pay-off of our education is really important. I would say it would be better to go to another school if Columbia doesn't offer enough money, because while it is a great school, in the end your motivation, inherent skills, etc. will really make or break the kind of job you get. Esp. since all the other schools you are applying to are also really good and will give you those opportunities! I applied to Columbia on the application due date, pah, so I probably won't hear back too soon =/ Edit: On that note, KateC, considering your stats I actually think it is quite likely Columbia will give you good funding! Although I don't know how much they typically fund, your stats look like a cut above the rest so that can only help!
  6. Angela - I'm from Palm Beach County, what about you? I applied to Global Activities program. Definitely one of the more competitive ones.
  7. No problem, xxxxling! Ah, that's so rough since if I do get into Michigan, getting into my special program might have a pretty significant weight on whether or not I go. (I applied to the Global Activities one). Do you think they wait to tell you anything about initial financial aid until they know your decision on the special program? I should have asked that at the webinar =/
  8. By the by, if any of you have any questions about Ann Arbor or University of Michigan, I have been going here for undergrad and can most likely help out with everything from student life, to the city itself, good places to live, the drab-ness of the School of Social Work building (it is unfortunately drab, but there are worse..and it is in a really, really good location), etc if you are considering coming here. I am from south florida so I know what it is like to come here from a very different place, too, if you want some perspective on that And congrats to everyone who has been admitted so far!
  9. Haha yeah a ton of debt is not.worth.it! I applied to Chicago and Michigan on December 1st, UMB on Dec. 16th (though I don't think my application was completely finished until early January because of things I had to mail), and everywhere else in early to mid January. So some places I definitely understand not having heard from yet, and still the wait drives me nuts! I actually still haven't finished my app to NYU, all I have to do is the essay and pay the app fee, but I kind of see no point in applying there now that I know I have Chicago, haha. P.S are you from Florida? I lived there until moving to Michigan for undergrad!
  10. I think that was a really good answer! Smart of you to explain that no one can be 100%, very down to earth and honest. Still nothing from UMB In some ways, Michigan is my top choice, but in the end the most important factor for me is scholarship money. I'm also really interested in B.U, UMB, and luckily Chicago! What is your top choice?
  11. I hope you get in too! I was really hoping to hear news from them today, but still nothing. I'm worried because I mentioned depression in my essay, but I think I did not explain well enough how I have overcome it =/ It would really suck if something like that influences their decision.
  12. O/T but omg, why must you have that username? Now I feel like it is a bad omen. Like, a really bad omen.
  13. Oh man...it really is...I will be so happy to just find out! Good news that we may even hear tomorrow..wow!
  14. The Webinar today was ok - Most of it was a little boring since I felt I already knew the info, but I did learn a lot so if anyone has any ?'s I can probably help out! Also, they confirmed that my app was completed by Dec. 1st. *phew* Also - they said they should be getting back to people who applied by Dec. 1st very soon. Also, it seems that you are likely to hear sooner if you applied for a special scholarship program. If you applied to become a GSSA or have any ?'s about field placements, the webinar will probably be helpful for you so you should listen/read (not sure how it will work?) to the transcript! Which I am guessing will go online tomorrow.
  15. Thanks for the info! This makes me wonder about other schools with similar app websites. Like Boston U's and Maryland, who don't have something like Wolverine access to my knowledge, haha.
  16. Congrats Kristi! WOW!!!!
  17. Also - Did it update your status on the Apply Web site or did you check Wolverine Access?
  18. Congrats!!! Yes, please tell us more!!!
  19. Rjrose, this worries me too. I swore that I would only attend an MSW that offers me at least half of the tuition in merit scholarships, but at this point I doubt that will happen. U Chicago offered me 12k which might be as good as it gets, so I'm basically just planning on working my butt off in a work-study job to help balance out the remainder of the pay. I really, really cannot take out more loans, at least an excessive amount, because I am already super in debt from undergrad. It may come down to taking a year off to work before going to grad school =/ We'll see...would help if I can hear from some more schools!!! In terms of the where - it might, however I think MSW is all about the opportunities you take advantage of with each program. Even if you don't go to the best MSW program, if you get excellent field placements and rec's from those and your profs, and good grades, etc, I'm sure you can get into a great PhD
  20. I think it depends on each school's policy. But the fact that you are in AmeriCorps will definitely help! It is worth asking, but word it in the sense that you are considering it, not definitely want to defer.
  21. I will be attending the webinar! Will also be going to the Spring Open House in March (easy for me to go since I live in AA), unless I get rejected by then =/ Anyone else going to that? Will definitely post about the webinar afterwards. Good luck on your interview tomorrow, Angela!!! Tell us how it goes!
  22. Congrats, Ellie! I definitely had everything in by the 1st, but there was some issue with my transcript not getting there even though I received a delivery confirmation from UPS. =/ I will call them, I just don't want to seem annoying =/ Would it be ridiculous for me to say that I can show them my receipt from UPS? I ended up resending my transcript straight from my University and soon after that they said it was complete...I wonder if they don't accept transcripts mailed from individuals...
  23. long lines
  24. Hey all, Wondering a few things! 1) If you have heard from Michigan, what are your stats, etc. and when did you apply? (Whatever you don't mind answering, of course!) 2) Have you received any merit aid? 3) I am concerned because even though I submitted my application on 12/01, it was not listed as "complete" until three weeks ago. Does this mean I am still considered early action? I figure I'll call the office but ask here first. 4) Anything else UMich MSW related you want to discuss I feel like I won't hear from Michigan until, like, April even though I submitted in December =[ The wait is gnawing at me!
