  1. I can empathize . . . . hoping for good news from NYU!
  2. I'm waiting for a miracle too. I can at least keep you company.
  3. captiv8ed--should I just say something to the effect that 'my primary interest is with the program?' How should I phrase it? I don't want to say, "[school] is my first choice," or something to the effect, since the school probably hears that from most people.
  4. Since you're a social scientist and appreciate honesty . . . Your response has a lot of animosity, for what appears to be fair questions given your original inquiry. It sounds like you almost resent your boyfriend. If he doesn't grasp that "his grad school trajectory isn't the same," why are you still together? You also come off as if you have an inflated sense of self-importance. This is an internet forum, so it's quite possible that's not the case. I'm in a long-term LDR with an academic, but he's ahead of me, so our situation isn't the same in that sense.
  5. Do you think it's a good idea to "check-in" with the school, if you are wait-listed? I've been on a wait-list since mid-late March. I have been in contact with them, so they know I am interested in the outcome. The school doesn't have a deadline of April 15, so that's not an issue. My last contact was end of March.
  6. My sense is that the wait-list I'm on is this scenario. It's actually the school listed in your signature.
  7. Write to all of the schools asking for feedback on your application. Not all schools will be helpful in their response, but those that are will provide valuable assistance.
  8. I have another, general, question about wait-lists, though I'm not in sociology. How is an unranked wait-list organized?
  9. I agree with most of what is said here. I think it's more about where you can do your best work. I have no problem with any given Ivy League School, it's more about what the collective "Ivy" institution can represent. And I do think the American brand of elitism is particularly bad. Americans tend to be isolationist. Living in North America you'd think the US is the center of the world. Anyone who has lived outside of North America realizes that's far from the case.
  10. Agreed. Good analogy.
  11. waiting to be accepted off wait-list too. I keep visualizing the e-mail informing me of the good news.
  12. still looking for any input!
  13. I agree with the above poster. Let them know you're interested, but there's not much else you can or should do. I'm wait-listed at a program I'd really like to attend, so I understand it's hard waiting.
  14. I'm not here to meet and great (but I would like to offer congrats!) It's hard to round up Ph.D. people in my field to get an answer re: UofT, hence why I am posting here. I'm on wait-list in my program (since March 19th). I'm just wondering if anyone has a sense of how long the wait might be until I hear either way. I can't e-mail the grad admin assistant, again. They have been very helpful. I just don't want to be irritating. I don't know anything else about the wait-list, other than 1 person was accepted off the wait-list this past week (but, they may be on a different list since they are an international).
  15. Kierkegaard? For pleasure?! ugh!
  16. It's highly unlikely he would be funded, or it would be some kind of arrangement where he gives it back to the university.
  17. wonder if he over-writes like he over-acts? generally, I like him
  18. Congrats!! And wasn't that the only school to which you applied? I followed the NSSR thread, periodically--I can empathize because I'm still waiting too!
  19. Agreed. I've had some tough times with roommates, too. At some point, it's just not worth it.
  20. No H&M, I looked up the link if you want to check it out: College Mall, IN There's an H&M in Indianapolis. Are you bringing a car? You can getting around Bloomington fine without one, but access to a car beats having to rely on the shuttle to Indianapolis, or freedom to go other places.
  21. If you want that kind of shopping, it's best to go to Indianapolis, or even Chicago (it's not that close, though). Aside from College Mall, Bloomington is mostly boutique shops.
  22. "C" used to be the assumption, but since the recession, I'm not so sure that's always the case.
  23. I see, if you count Boston proper. In Greater Boston--including Cambridge, Quincy, etc--the population is quite large!
