Wait 7-10 and e-mail them again. If they don't reply the second time, you don't want to work with them anyway.

take another course to replace the the C+.

Here's a thread about sub-3.0 gpas from a guy who was around here last year--"belowthree" (now in a PhD program in CS).

I think people generally appreciate honesty, but in your delivery you come of as a pretentious jackass. You may not a be a jackass, but you also don't know if this person i) lazy, or ii) just doesn't have what it takes. As for the money argument, for all you know he could be rolling in the dough. On a personal note, I know a lot of people that were given the "straight talk," as you say, and ended up settling for less than they should have in life.

I love when people who joined, like 2 minutes ago, make totally insulting, dumb ass comments. Maybe they had extenuating circumstances in the first 2.5 years, only to do really well in the last 1.5. Poster didn't provide enough information to make assumptions either way. Even if their grad school hopes don't pan-out in the long run, they come here for advice/encouragement.

You should call them if it's still an option. I've done this and my impression is that they want to ensure you're legitimate. Just call them and have a conversation--they'll be more impressed than if you call and sound like you're reading a script. I agree with the above poster who said that it's a good indication that the school cares about it's students.

Domestic vs. International PhD: Pros and Cons
peppermint.beatnik replied to jgrant1118's topic in Religion
Kloppenberg, at U of T, is a major scholar in the biblical field. *I have to comment on use of "impactful" because it's a personal pet peeve of mine--it's not a word. I know it appears in some recent versions of dictionaries, but so does "irregardless," which is also not a word. -
I didn't contact because, as stated above, I thought current students might perceive the e-mail as a bit random. I would contact students if I was admitted to a program. Last year, when I applied, I visited a school about 2 days after I applied (only convenient time). The students were very nice, but after the visit I regretted applying. It just was not the type of environment where I would want to complete a PhD. It was unfortunate because it seemed like a great program (and the campus was gorgeous), but I didn't like the feel at all.

Anyone ever confused by your profession?
peppermint.beatnik replied to modernity's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm in religious studies. "So, you want to be a nun, or a minister?" -
I'm a small "l" liberal (to differentiate from the "Liberal" party in Canada). I definitely lean to the left, but on some issue I'm merely centre left, while on others, such as the environment, I'm way left. I think some disciplines nurture leanings more than others. For example, I don't know too many small c conservative sociologists.

I've done on and off long distance for 4 years. Did overseas long distance 9 months. It's totally doable, and not hard (other than you miss them) if you are both committed to making it work. What do you mean by saying you're "bored"?

I agree with this. Also, I don't understand why you wouldn't tailor your project to the resources of the department--it would be foolish not to. So, if you want to study Y, from perspective Z, but the department studies Y, from perspective X, why wouldn't you say that that you want to study Y from perspective X? If you're a perfect fit, that's great, but it's not always the case. Lots of profs pursue research in grad school that is not necessarily what they absolutely want to study. When they get tenure, they switch. It's still in the same area, but not the exact same focus.

I think it would be hard to do an MA with that kind of distraction. Second year I lived with a friend I met during my MA--she was in same program. We were great friends, but tension definitely got worse as work piled up.

Classmate FORGED letters of rec... What do I do?
peppermint.beatnik replied to vanasme's topic in Applications
People were really upset about it, from what I remember. -
Is it the ACA/PCA?

Why was this thread resurrected? It was a hassle last year. -
Are the arts and humanities only for the wealthy?
peppermint.beatnik replied to 90sNickelodeon's topic in The Lobby
I say a qualified yes. It doesn't have to be that way, but my parents supported me through 6 years of undergraduate study. I changed majors three times, from english, to philosophy, to humanities. I also got to study abroad. A lot of my friends didn't have that luxury. Most did health science, nursing, or something along those lines and paid for there own education. -
I have a lap top for the same reason. I use my desktop at home though--lap top too hard on my shoulder/elbow/wrist to use all the time (you can also get something to convert your lap top into a desktop)

I know, I got one from a graduate school of psychoanalysis. While interesting, I would never seriously consider.

I had the same thing happen. I thought I hadn't checked the box, but I don't know how else they'd get the information.

I've been reading Raymond Chandler novels. Right now I'm on "The Big Sleep."

Most of my applications require an academic c.v. + a "work history"

Applying Early Vs. Applying Near the Deadline
peppermint.beatnik replied to whereiscarmen's topic in Applications
The schools to which I am applying, it doesn't matter. Most people I know submit right at the deadline. I like to think about things over time, so if I submitted my application too far in advice I'd be kicking myself that I didn't say this or that in my sop, or whatever.
