  3. I'd never post a rejection on facebook. I wouldn't want people's pity, plus seeing that status would just kind of be a kick in the teeth every day.

  6. I'm predicting that I'll be rejected at all six of the schools in the US to which I applied. I have no idea about the UK though, as that will be more heavily funding dependent.
  7. I compulsively check my email every half hour or so on my phone. I really need to get a grip...
  8. Congratulations! Edinburgh is amazing. I'm currently a student there, so if you have any questions about the city/uni let me know!
  9. When I had these chats, I asked a bit about graduate student life, the supervision style of my potential supervisor, the dynamics of the department (collaboration between groups and whatnot).
  10. Don't give up! Even if you don't get in this year, there's always next year. You never know for sure why you've been rejected; it might just be bad luck that they had too many super awesome applicants like yourself, and they just had to draw metaphorical straws. Or maybe, someone else just had better fitting research interests. Whatever results you get, you are definitely not a failure! The schools are just silly for not seeing just how good you are.
  11. I'm from Indiana, but I go to school at the University of Edinburgh. I think the turnaround was very fast because they knew that they wanted to put me forward for the studentship I've been awarded, and I needed to speak with advisors/pick which one I wanted to work with, as I needed a letter of support from the potential advisor. It was all quite whirlwind, though. I had to book flights two days before I went there! Hope you get a positive notice from Bristol soon.
  12. My research group is random matrix theory/quantum chaos. I applied at the end of December ( I think I submitted around the 28th of December). They contacted me about going for interview during the first week of January, and I flew down on the 11th. The first round of the fellowship I got is already over, but apparently there is a teachign fellowship that the maths department gives out which they're going to decide on soon, I think. What research group did you apply for?
  13. Hi! I'm currently a student at Edinburgh, so I'll try to answer your questions. I haven't heard of bedbugs anywhere in Edinburgh, so that shouldn't be a problem. The Tollcross/Bruntsfield/Sciennes/Newington areas are all good to live in. They'll put you within a 20 minute walk of George Square. Edinburgh is a fairly expensive city to live in; you almost certainly won't find a one-bedroom flat for less than £600 a month, and you're probably looking at close to £800, not including bills. All of the areas that I mentioned are student areas, so you do get the occasional drunken lout shouting outside at 3am, but there's no where that's specifically party areas. There's also the option of living in New Town, which is across Princes Street. You'd still be within 20 minutes walk of Geore Square, and that area is really nice, especially Stockbridge. There are Tesco's and Sainsbury's and Co-Ops all over the city, so being near a grocery store is never a problem. If you want to get an idea of locations/prices, citylets.co.uk shows flats for let in Edinburgh. As for postgraduate housing with the uni, it's somewhat expensive, but I think it's often a good idea for your first year because it is quite difficult to find a flat on your own without being in the country. The uni housing is standard; not great but not horrible either. If you have any other questions, let me know.
  14. I just got a fellowship from the University of Bristol for international students. It pays all of my fees and gives me a stipend. It's hard to get funding for international students for PhDs, but it isn't impossible. A lot of deadlines have passed now though.
  15. To balance out possibly getting rejected from another uni, I've just found out that I've been awarded a fellowship from the University of Bristol that will pay all my fees and give me a stipend. :D They only awarded five of these fellowships to international students, so I'm over the moon!
  16. Argh. One of my acquaintances at uni got an acceptance last week to a program that I applied to. I've heard nothing. I don't know if this means I'm rejected or what. :S

  18. Yeah; we're all a bit stessed and nervous, but we're crossing our fingers for good results for my flatmate. If she gets bad news, though, we'll be there all the way to support her. Thanks, I appreciate it.
  19. Possibly the next season of Star Trek: TNG. Or maybe just a lot of chocolate.
  20. I just found out that my flatmate might have cancer; she has to wait until Monday to find out. Sort of puts my waiting into perspective now, heh.
  21. I got an email from the international office at one of the universities to which I applied, talking about a photo competition for a calendar. It was clearly meant for current studentis, and for a moment I was like "oooh maybe they've accepted me but not let me know!" And then I looked back through my emails, and saw that no decisions will be made until February/March and I deflated inside.
  22. I've applied in the UK for maths. I've been accepted to Glasgow, and interviewed at Bristol. Haven't heard from York, Durham, Imperial, or Edinburgh though.

  24. Just breathe! Stressing out won't get you anywhere, and no news is definitely better than a rejection. I'm sure you'll be fine.
