Program Specific Questions - Fall 2013
rawera replied to bfat's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Whole-heartedly agree, though I'm a man (boy). I get that whore, slut, tramp, trollop, and the like ARE gendered, but they needn't be. I tend to use them without gender and almost never as a pejorative. -
Chances at Comp Lit Programs?
rawera replied to DontHate's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I think it's hard not to (wrongly) view this exercise as a zero sum game. So if someone has good chances that reduces our respective chance of getting in. But gradcafe is only a small small (extremely neurotic) sample from all those applying. There will be a few posters who register only once they've been accepted. "Hi, I'm the one who posted the acceptances to Penn, Harvard, Yale." Etc. -

That that lock is a bit of a tramp? edit: hadn't read the rest of the posts (dare I say it, nicely done c_c_c, but I did anticipate feminist backlash. Proud of myself for having my finger on the pulse of this forum. -

Tom Waits = Literature
rawera replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
It's pretty good but I don't know if sinaii is a good vehicle for krug. I'm waiting until I see that set up live before I decide one way or the other. It's not RSL but I still like what he's doing. Two or three songs really impress. -

I wanted to ask in the songwriter thread but this should do just as well. Trip, have you listened to the new moonface album, that is all. -

Cost of living in Gainesville is OK. I really can't say though since I've only lived in the Central Florida area. Rent is not as cheap as you'd like, and it is a college town through and through. Tallahassee (FSU) has better rent options, I think. I will say Gainesville has pretty decent food considering the size and type of city. I have a 1/1 that is easily bikeable to campus. I pay 465 a month for rent and then utilities (shitty DSL for 25 and 50-100 for electric [depends on your AC dependence]). My girlfriend is renting a room in a 3/1 house for 375 a month plus utilities of around 75-100. It's a decently neat old house, if that's your thing. She's also really close to campus -- the "student ghetto," unfortunately it's fratstar central generally. The farther away from campus you get the quieter and cheaper it tends to go -- even outside of Gainesville, lots of profs live in the surrounding Newberry and High Springs areas. It gets rural fast, though. Within the city proper, as you move away from the university, you'll eventually hit the point of "too cheap." As small and friendly as the city is, it can be kind of dangerous and seedy. Putting aside any politics of homelessness, it's a salient problem in the city. I also have the suspicion that any one from NYC or Boston or the like might read this, laugh, and say "no gainesville is definitely cheap and sure there are SOME homeless." -

I think I'm going to try cutting down to a 15 page sample this year. If I can drop 10 pages from a sample while maintaining majority of the argument then those 10 pages probably weren't too important. -

I can shoot some PMs to interested parties regarding my subject study methods and exam experience. I scored 90%+ with like 2 months' prep time. Full disclosure, I have only unfunded MA offers this year (ie, didn't get accepted). Compare to Stately above. -

I'd say the "hierarchy" provided by Jeremiah is probably right. It is possible, however, that certain schools' Graduate Schools may require X GRE score. That said, the department can always petition. I would be more concerned with hitting X% verbal than Y% subject, based on zero expertise. If we must discuss GRE: as far as the subject exam goes, it's definitely possible to cram for that exam. I went from "oh I guess I need to sign up for that huh, sure hope there are dates available in time for my application deadlines" (not that I knew when those were either) to 93% in like 1.5 months....without killing myself studying. I am also proof that 98% verbal/93% subj won't get you in alone. It's all about the SOP and sample. It's probably worth writing the SOP now, even if you save it as shitsop.doc. You'll eventually change the name and revise it more than a few times. Or you won't, if you're me last year -
Lyoness, your advice is consistently some of the best on the site.

A friend of mine who was accepted into a journalism program copied me a piece of her acceptance letter to answer my question about funding. "I'll copy it," she said. I protested, but it was too late. I saw those words: "approved, admission, 2012." It was no more or less genial than the ones I had received, but hers glowed, I think. I saw the promised land, I caught a bit of Canaan. And in that sight, that moment of knowing it, I knew my dreams were dashed before they had even begun.
