  1. Hi folks! Question: I am a second year full time graduate student. I took some graduate courses as an undergraduate. I read in the FAQ: Q8. I took some graduate-level courses as an undergraduate. Do those count towards the 12-month limit? A: Any graduate-level courses taken as an undergraduate do not count towards the limit of allowed graduate study. Only graduate-level courses taken after you completed your undergraduate degree would count Should I list the graduate hours I took as an undergrad on the application?? Does that FAQ answer mean don't list them or still list them but they don't count?? (I understand hours don't matter for me anyway as a full time graduate student.)
  2. uggg, this is torture. why would they have it come out at such an unhealthy hour?! anyone else have 9am lab meeting tomorrow??
  3. Hi folks, my plans changed and I now have some flexability about when I go to Cambridge to hunt for a place. When do you think is the absolute BEST time to go and look for a place? I am primarily going to be looking in Central Square and Kendall Square
  4. Exact same situation here as well. School A is close to home, well known, and had one specific prof who was like my research twin and we got along great in the interview and correspondance. School B is basically number one in the field and has more resources as a program. I picked school B... don't know if I made the right decision.
  5. Hey all, there is a facebook group for new grad students in Boston/Cambridge: http://www.facebook.com/groups/417852061575938/ Description: Group for individuals starting grad school in Boston in 2012. Any and all schools, programs, majors, etc welcome. Hopefully this group will be a good resource for meetups, finding roommates, activities, etc.
  6. I see you are applying for history programs-- try asking in the history forum (this is for biology)

Hey folks, I'm looking for roommates, prefereably gay or queer females/trans/nonbinary/genderqueer (or friendly to all of those) type folks for housing in Cambridge this upcoming school year. Ideally I'd like to rent a house with 3-4 bedrooms, but I am open to a smaller place if I find the right roommates. Anyhow, if anyone is interested send me a message!

  9. So my friend was notified today that he is on the NYU waitlist. So if you aren't going to NYU in bio (specifically dev), please let them know now!!
  10. Hey! I identify as a gay woman/queer and I am attending MIT this fall. I've done a bunch of research on this topic and Boston/Cambridge seem very lgbtq friendly. I know a few gay people there now and all of them speak of the area approvingly. I signed up for this mailing list as well (http://www.queeragenda.org/) and I've gotten a few things from them-- they have advertisements for various events and it seems there is always something going on, including outside of the bar/party scene (reading clubs, discussion groups, etc etc). If you don't mind me asking, what is your gender identity? I'm actually looking for queer roommates for this upcoming year in the Cambridge area. You should send me a PM and we can chat about our various Boston/Cambridge concerns, as well as perhaps housing together (or just the former if you have housing plans/if we are wildly incompatable!).
  11. Asking for a friend-- anyone know about NYU dev?? He emailed last week and they said they they were finishing interviews and were still deciding and he would hear at the beginning of this week, but not a peep yet. I saw on the results survey that in past years people have heard through April.

I will definitely contact Linda Patton then before starting my search! I'm already browsing Craiglist religiously, in the thought that the perfect place might come up...

Hmmm... I would prefer not to live in a highly undergrad area just since it's not really my scene... I want to look for (and find!) a place in late May, but not start the lease until August/September when my program begins. Any idea about the feasability of this (coupled with finding a place in a non-undergrad area). Sorry if my questions are super specific!

Check out Lawrenceville or Bloomfield, pretty cheap and a good mix of people. Music scene is pretty mediocre-- lots of local acts but you'll rarely (if ever) see a 'bigger name indie' act come through (for instance, I'm attending CMU now and I road tripped to DC to see Belle and Sebastian)
  15. Hey, we are discussing this on the MIT forum on gradcafe if you are interested

I was planning on visiting at the very end of May to check some places out-- do you think I'll be able to find anything that early??

Hey! Where are you coming from?? I am leaning towards off campus for a few reasons (order of following reasons is not a ranking): 1) I can pick a more exact location 2) I can pick my roommates 3) All MIT housing is furnished except for one dorm and I want to bring my own furniture 4) the MIT housing I saw was very small and not very homey 5) off campus is cheaper or about the same price I've been browsing craiglist and it seems there are a lot of options... thinking of contacting some people in the next two months and then visiting at the end of pay and picking out a place.
  18. Same! How are you going to find a roommate?

Hey future MIT-ers. (Well, I am probably attending, still finalizing). Thought I'd make a thread for us. My question-- Where do you think you'll live next year? I am leaning towards an apartment rather than grad housing. Thoughts?
  20. Hey fellow probable-MITer. Are you gonna do grad housing or apartment? I am leaning apartment but I don't want to feel isolated
  21. Yep, I heard back from MIT the Wednesday after my interview
  22. UChicago is in Hyde Park, which is on the south side (as I'm sure you know). The neighborhoods I mentioned are all on the north side, and not super easy to get to from Hyde Park unless you have a car. Just something to consider Again, let me know if you have any other questions!
  23. Hey! What school are you looking at? Chicago has a lot of resources and events. There is a more male dominated area called Boystown, which is more of your typical gay bar scene. Andersonville and Wicker Park are more lesbian dominated, and there are a number of lesbian bars, female owned sex shops, vegan coffee shops, other stereotypical lesbian things, etc. There are also city wide events/festivals, such as Reeling, which is a great GLBTQ film festival that happens every November. During the summer, besides Pride, there are a lot of street festivals and the like in each area. I hope that helped! If you want any other info feel free to post here again or send me a PM ETA-- Less superficially, there are also many health resources for the queer community and the city is overall very gay friendly
  24. Can't help on the Princeton front, but if you (and I) end up in Boston we should potentially look into rooming together (if you are interested)... def want to room with glbtq students.
