  4. So its the middle of a sunday afternoon, and I got struck by an urge to check the Rutgers status page- even though there has not been one peep from anybody about Rutgers decisions. Guess what it said? No Decision. Oh, well. We'll just see what it says on Sunday night! Can anybody relate??
  5. So if may ask some follow up questions: in this situation, contact the POI, but do I do anything more than thank them for the admission? Do I mention that I have not recieved a funding offer or that pending a decision on funding by the school I will let them know if I will be attending? Do I mention other pending apps, etc...? Any feedback by you others with insight would be appreciated...
  6. Ha ha! Maybe your best quip yet...i think you are actually Matt Groenig, pursuing a PhD because you have realized that the need for a career change is imminent... When the Ottoman turks conquered the capital city of Byzantine Empire in 1453, they re-named the city Istanbul- which means "the city of Islam." This was the ultimate slap in the face to Christians: -The city's former name of Constantinople was self-named by Constantine, the Roman emperor, over a thousand years earlier. -Constantine was the first true champion of Christianity among the Roman emperors: he legalized Christianity throughout the empire, made it the official religion of the empire and credited the new religion with his rise to power. -Constantinople stood as the epi-center of Eastern Orthodox Chrisitianity for centuries before its fall to the Ottomans
  7. I used to daydream about being a top pro athlete, and about being a rock star...now I day dream about being accepted to Yale, Columbia, Penn and Princeton and still not have heard from my top choice ??!!?? Totally insane. Just like I wanted to be Emmitt Smith when I was growing up, I now want to be Safferz!!!! ...btw, Safferz, instead of just declining your Penn admission, can you assign to one of us?? We can decide on a lottery basis or by way of a special essay contest...or by who has the best stand-up routine (throwing you a bone, oseirus)...

  9. Hey all, I posted a hopefully up-to-date admissions list on the admissions thread. Some interesting trends are starting to take form regarding schools and people. For instance, I nominate attia, sequi001, telemaque and virmundi for the 2012 "Safferz-Lite" Award!!! Way to go to our finalists. As for me, I got my official letter from UW-M, which of course did not mention funding at all. So, I called the Graduate school to ask if this means that I get no funding and they said that all the acceptance letters are silent as to funding because that is handled at the department level. So, if anybody is curious about the same thing, maybe this will help...

  11. at least once a day for the past four days, you've been responsible for me having to explain to my wife "what's so funny"
  12. So, I'm trying to- I really, really am. I made a conscious decision to only apply to top-ranked programs, because at age 30-something, with family to support, I figured I need to maximize my employability. I have the utmost respect for UW-M as a program, and my wife and 1 yr old have both ok'd the move- if I get funding!!! For me, no funding=no matriculation. So while my acceptance serves as a feather in my cap in terms of validating my academic achievement and my application building, its hard to really celebrate at this point. My anxiety level is as high or higher than it was a week ago. This whole post is abou me venting to hopefully reduce some of the stress- I'm typically not this much of a worrier or this melo-dramatic, but I wonder if someone else is in the same boat... PS: The 2 outright rejections, one informal/2nd hand rejection (UNC), and one passive rejection (Yale) haven't helped reduce the stress much...why cant I just be Safferz????? PPS: I'm not trying to touch off a debate on whether top-ranked ranked programs give one an advantage over still quality, but not top-ranked programs in the job market. I realize I may very well be altogether wrong in my assessment, and in any event the exceptions to that 'rule' abound, but thats still my assessment.
  13. Hey "Y": You're a trip! Full on...
  14. Just had playtime with my 13-month old...pretty effective therapy for the grad-school rejection blues... ...as is thinking (...dreaming...) of the potential acceptances to come... thanks for the funding update at UW-M TMP, if I can just secure a decent package I can easily 'resign' myself to attending a top 20 program in what everyone describes as a delightful camelot to raise a family... ...hah, wonder how long this renegade moment of serenity and perspective will last for... continued best wishes to all, I've come to regard you all as my friends (and my wife's stink eye at my incessant board watching has turned into an insatiable need on her part for real-time reporting of all your updates...)
  15. No TMP- NO!!! Its not "the Univeristy of Wisconsin- Madison"! Its only "THE Ohio State University"! How can THE OSU assume its rightful place atop the pantheon of the public school world if its preliminary article is not emphasized in a truly unique way?!?! Sheesh!!
  16. Yeah, no apology needed there, Safferz' run is quite worthy of special mention. Safferz- I say please don't feel like you have to apologize for your success either...you obviously worked very hard to put a creme-de-la-creme application together, and I say use this forum to celebrate (albeit tactfully )
  17. 'sup TB...I almost posted an APB for you yesterday...congrats on the WashU, sorry about the others...
  18. Rejected from Princeton...the carnage is starting to mount. After a relatively positive start (UW-M), I'm 0-2 officially, and staring down a no-interview, no-acceptance situation at Yale. I said a couple of weeks ago that I would make a deal to get into just one of my programs, in exchange for rejection from the rest, but its still very disappointing. Plus if UW-M does not come through with funding for me, thats as good as getting rejected. Here's hoping (and prayin!) for at least one more admit- still got five more shots (well, technically four and a half after what my advisor said about UNC). Congrats to all of today's winners. Safferz for President!!!!!
  19. I got my Illinois rejection- I would not have gone there over UW-M, but I dont have confirmaiton of funding at UW either... so now I have one as-of-yet unfunded admit, one official rejection, one informal 2nd hand-hand rejection (My MA advisor's contact at UNC said I'm a no-go b/c there is no suitable advisor) and one passive rejection (No interview at Yale)... On the whole, I'm not feelin' so great about things at the moment... ...nows a good time to check out for a bit- I'm takin' a nap!
  20. don't know if you're a sports fan or not, buts lots of times, a team will start off losing by 3-4 runs after 2 innings (baseball), 10-13 points after a quarter (football or basketball) and end dominating the rest of the game and winning easily... ...there are many other parallels that paint the same picture (such as bombing the first assigment and finishing a class with a 94%)... the point: you have way too many apps still in play to get defeatist... ...by the time you blink you will be choosing between your 3-4 acceptances ("do I prefer the quaintness and seasonal changes of Seattle or the sunshine and bustle of SoCal?")... you'll see...

  22. sure, too much revelling, fist-pumping and "Yes!!!!!!"-ing to be done...resume life again on Friday, better yet- Monday if possible...
  23. Awesome news!!! But, how early does your mail get delivered???
  24. just an fyi, I re-formatted the admissions list so that now the schools are listed alphabetically, and all of the usernames are 'filed' under the school name... Conspicuous by their absence on the list were Duke and IU... anyway, best of luck to all of us today, lets see some first timers get on the admit scoreboard today!!!
  25. OK, here is the 'new' list, with schools listed alphabetically, followed by an alphabetical list of admitees. Like I said in a previous post, I have no desire to police this thread, but I would request that if you want to self-update, follow the basic format: alphabetically by school and username and in the appropriate section. As the season progresses, we can figure out how to make it more helpful by listing sub-fields or commitments etc...
