  1. I can vouch for kelkel, its true...between the two of us, we've been rather OCD on the board
  2. I've been telling fellow applicants all week: "What ever you do, DO NOT VISIT THE GRADCAFE!!!!!!" Congrats TMP and owl and all other with good news... Best of luck to those still waiting... ...near as I can tell, everyone who has reported rejections still has at least 3-5 schools left right? fingers-crossed!!!
  3. Just repped each of your last two posts...thanks for the info...
  4. Whoa!! Hold on...you mean for all applicants?? Did you call the dept.? OK...so does tomorrow afternoon mean in the next ten minutes, or any ten minute increment after that? Just to be sure, I better check...
  5. Congrats Kelkel...for someone reason, I am particularly inspired by this news...hopefully this moves uncle mo' over to our side of the bench!!
  6. Also, I just overheard the dept. chair at my MA school (I'm adjuncting this semester) nearly blow her top when the dept. secretary asked her about the status of a LOR for student trying to get into law school...after announcing in a very curt (yet polite) way that she did not have the time to deal with this stuff right now, she closed her office door...first time I've seen it closed in two years... Moral of the story: Caveat emptor to all those who are calling to inquire/follow up with prospective departments...I suppose we are not the only group under pressure at the moment (as SL mentioned yesterday)... ...fyi
  7. This is my sub-field, though its the first school I've applied to with word of an actual decision (I guess, the results board does show one acceptance for UNC-CH from 2 weeks ago)...my inbox is woefully empty...is my email like fire-walled from accepting emails from other .edus?? woefully empty...let me re-fresh one more time...nope, nothing!?!
  8. For decisions like this one, I follow the "what good can come from it?" analysis. I just feel (purely instinctively) that the annoyance, harrassment, and faux paux factor significantly outweighs any hope for a "radar-reminder" factor... Also, the sages in this forum are stressing patience and restraint...
  9. You gotta quit your job and join in on the fun Crater!!
  10. 35 users right now!!! There are some entertaining and highly applicable threads under the "Waiting it Out" forum in the "Applying to Grad School" section of the menu, FYI. It might offer a nice diversion for anyone feeling stir-crazy...
  11. Ha...head over to the History room and read a few of the 1000 comments posted in the last 7 days in the Chit-Chat thread...its safe to say we're mostly all freakin' out over there... Enjoy your serenity, MJJ
  12. Kelkel, my sincere condolences on UT. Remember, it just takes one to make this a successful app. season. And we're all pulling for you...
  13. Wow, PUGS! I thought my list of schools was ridiculously top-heavy (in terms of "national ranking"). The schools on your list all are top-top shelf...I'm impressed with your confidence level...your early returns suggest it was quite justified by the way!
  14. It seems that LMS is our UW-M insider... LMS, what did they say about me???
  15. So, my wife walks in from getting the mail and announces loudly "Today's your lucky day!!!" As I'm picturing her handing me a large and very stuffed manilla envelope marked YALE GSAS, she hands me my free personalized return address labels from St. Jude's Children's Hopsital. Not a bad score in itself- but not what passes for a "lucky mail day" in these frenzied times!!!!
  16. I presume this term refers to those apps that are so strong, this school expects many of those students to be accepted into the Ivy schools...? Obviously, it could be lip service, but it was couched as genuinely high feedback from their adcomm, so I am taking it and running with it... And the reason half of my apps went to Ivys was because I fancied myself a very strong candidate...we will see if 'they' agree... I'd rather not mention which state university south of the Mason Dixon line I am referring to...remember, just because I'm paranoid does not mean they're not watching me...
  17. Ha...all half a day of it? And hang in there...way too early to get nervous about ND...the best lies ahead!
  18. So, I finally got some encouraging news today. My M.A. thesis advisor is close with a professor (not my POI) at one of my non-Ivy schools. He was told by this professor that I will NOT be accepted into the program. ??? (“I thought you said you had encouraging news…?”) The encouraging part is that the professor told him that my application was at the very top of the stack in what they call the “Ivy” pile (Too bad Yale doesn’t seem to agree, but anyway…). They can’t admit me because they do not have a sitting faculty member who can take on doctoral students in my sub-field specialty (I kind of knew this, but I feel that there are other professors who I would be able to work with, but this is a different issue). My advisor was told by the other professor that objectively speaking, he expects me to be accepted by at least a few of the schools I applied to (this school is one that asks us to name other schools we applied to)… Its not much, but it sure does make me feel better after a whole lotta nothin’
  19. I was just doing the same thing...I think I am formally changing my prediction of a few days from 3 admits, 4 rejects and 1 waitlist, to 7 rejects and 1 waitlist... I do not know if the manic-pessimism is justified or not, but it seems to fit my feelings pretty good... I know- I've gotten zero rejections and my 8 schools have a total of 1 admit so far (according to the board), but still its just a sinking feelin' right now in the pit of my stomach... PS: Note the change in screen name- RIP ADMITedlyLucky!!!
  20. I see that many of my schools have began announcing decisions in other of their programs...any one know if this has any correlation to the History departments at these schools announcing?
  21. Love the screen name- though you are definitely heading for the wrong field if you cant handle the 3x5s...my thesis advisor was a freak for the 3x5s, his idea of new fangled technology is micro-fiche...and he's not 'that' old, about 50 or so...
  22. ...the more worried I get that I was delusional about my prospects for admission... ...thank god I have to work all day tomorrow...
  23. Ok, so I would not look at an acceptance without funding as a "back-handed" acceptance...what I meant was that I cannot afford to go without funding, so for practical purposes it would be be tantamount to a rejection...
  24. False Events Appearing Real One of the main constants in my life...
  25. Is anybody planning to supplement their 1st year stipend by working?? Anybody feeling like an acceptance w/o funding is the same as a rejection?? (I answer yes to both)...
