  1. PM me if you want any 411 on the 305...been here for years...
  2. Sandy: 80 and sunny in SoFla...I'm just sayin'...
  3. Amazing! Your acceptance/rejection list is a statistical marvel... 5-0 Ivys and 0-3 non-Ivy top tier programs... truly fascinating dichotomy (regardless of how plausible/rational it may seem to ivory tower insiders...)
  4. funny you should say that: I just delivered the one day lecture on MesoAmeroca to my World Civ classes this week! (but dont worry- they areTuesday/Thursday class, so they got the longer lectures!)
  5. OK CnI, you're turning the corner towards a deluge (or at least a decent downpour) of good news!!!
  6. Sandy, every one on the history forum tends to prove that they are good people...especially you...I probably should have, actually, I definitely should have PM'd you and the others instead of calling you out...perhaps you did not realize how the requests came across to those reading them... CnI- wasn't referring to you at all...ego monger! j/k anyways, we can now return to our regularly scheduled happy family (insert effective yet corny remark from oseirus here...)
  7. I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers here, though I fear I might... The requests for details via PM from rejectees strkes me as poor etiquette and I'll tell you why... The only reason I would want details of someone else's rejection would be to hopefully distinguish my circumstances from theirs. For instance, did the rejectee receive a template email from the DGS, where I did not? Does the rejectee's status on the website show the rejection, where mine does not? These are the only reasons I would care about the details of someone else's rejections. If there are other motivations, then obviously I might reconsider my thoughts on the matter. Assuming that these are the motivations for these requests, however, I would respectfully suggest that it is better decorum to remain anxious (and in the hunt) than to ask some one who is smarting (or worse!) from a fresh rejection to spell out the details so that you can have that peace of mind... Again, if I am off base on my assumption of motivation, I apologize. But, like I said, this would be my only motivation for wanting details on somebody else's rejection...and in any event, its just my humble opinion...
  8. for all would be UW-M'ers, I spoke to a member of graduate program staff who said funding decisions are expected to be 'sent out' later this week. She said she was not on the funding committee and how no knowledge as to who got what...
  9. Right. I am much less invested on which is the proper way to adress a prof. in general than I am in the fact there is definitely not a particular correct way or a "one characterization" fits all approach to Crater's specific inquiry...
  10. According to my non-academic background, I try to afford people the most respect I possibly can...a number of professors from top programs have told me they like being called Dr., it recognizes their accomplishment. Typically, I try to call people what they want to be called. That does not mean anyone who disagress is committing some faux paux, but it is also pretentious to intimate that doing so is somehow disparaging to MDs. Also, grad students, while no longer undergrads, are still students. Professors (and adjuncts, for that matter) are employees of the school who are above the grad students on the totem pole. I think sometimes people develop tunnel vision regarding the sanctity of thier own viewpoints. I also think that several weeks of hero-worship can fuel this development.
  11. In my opinion, grad students are not on equal footing with their professors, and as such should defer to saying "Professor_____". I actually say "Dr. ______", but thats based on my own theory of what people really want to be called. To me, "call me Bill" is an invitation to adress your professor by first name, not how they sign their e-mail. Just one more opinion to throw on the pile, Crater! PS: I also second what virmundi said above...
  12. I knew it!!!!!! Class of '95. Congrats Sandy!! The U is a great school- esp. for Atlantic studies...
  13. congrats sendiri...and thanks for the info...
  14. anyone claiming tonights Cornell acceptance post? anyone have any info on their admit process? anyone have any inside info on the Wisconsin funding announcements?? (**heart sinks even lower**)
  15. so whats it gonna be- in true blues fashion, scotch on the rocks?
  16. Hey guys...I live a few towns over in history-ville. One of the folks over there said this was an entertaining thread which we would all be able to relate to- he was right. Just wanted to say congrats to those with great news, condolences to those with crappy news and a new set of fingernails/bottle of Tums for those with no news. We relate 100% to what you are going through and we hope to share a class building with you someday...
  17. Its always nice when those 'sure things' come thru for ya!
  18. Hi all. Long-time poster, first time lurker. I've been laying off the boards for the past several days, cuz I just feel pretty skeeved out about everything now. I've put all of my chips into the elite grad school pot, and I feel like I have a gut-shot straight draw. Me and my wife are totally fine with packing up and heading to great (Northern) Midwest. But as I sit here with only one as-of-yet-unfunded acceptance, followed by three straight rejections, and people getting admitted all over the place in my other schools (now that Cornell has joined in on the fun), its hard to find the silver-lining... I'm not trying to evoke sympathy or support (though, by all means send it if you must!), and I certainly do not want to rain on the parades of those that are getting great news, its just been a hard, hard week of hearing nothing (except my token Yale reject)... so, for all my "brethren and sistern" (are you o-serius with that one, dude?!) that feel like singing blues, what say we all break out our sunglasses, shot glasses and harmonicas just for tonight and tomorrow we'll get back on the "We Believe" bandwagon...I'm buyin'...
  19. right, I should say I am going to "re"-read the book, since the first attempt was useless...
  20. So I went to pick up take out at our favorate Thai place, but they were so busy (and disorganized) that after an hour of waiting for my order, I had to cancel the order and instead got take out from our favorate Mexican place- I left at 6:45 pm for the Thai food and returned at 8:45 with the Mexican food...the Mrs. was not happy... oh well, you win some- you lose some... for the summer, gonna concentrate on moving to another state and either find a full time gig or drum up some business to supplement a grad stipend... ... i do plan on doing some reading, but I am going to focus on that real heavy pseudo-philosophical crap that historians deem important like Novack's "That Noble Dream." For you first time grad students, I would suggest getting acquanted with the basics of historical theory and how to decipher all that quasi-intellectual gobbeldy-gook. Its a bear, and a major part of academic historical study...
  21. Thanks much for taking the time to register and respond.
  22. Its about time...after that Cal rejection, I was beginning to wonder if you had passed your prime... congrats...and have fun in Boston next fall!
  23. U Conn and NE are 1st class schools...and at least for me, my A-list roster of applications reflects my delusions of grandeur as much or more as it does any academic class I might be able to claim membership in... Welcome aboard and good luck...
  24. uh, hello?!?! Guys?!? Its Monday morning, in the THIRD week of February...its time to get back our neurotic/comforting non-stop chit-chat about what may or may not happen today...
  25. What do you have against trash picking, pawn shopping, truck driving and rifle shooting game shows???I thought History Channel 2 might actually attempt to provide some historical documentation (of whatever quality), but, no, they only care about explaining the origins of the Universe...they cant even throw me a sympathy morsel of Modern Marvels... The entire Discovery network has so jumped the shark...for instance, remember when TLC was "the Learning Channel"...ha ha
