  1. I know how you feel. My application got declined because they did not receive my fall transcripts in time Oh well, it just wasn't meant to be ...moving on.
  2. Yes, great news indeed because it covers tuition and substantially reduces our liability.
  3. Unfortunately, Trees, that is exactly what the lady who answered the phone said...but I am hoping that they say that to everyone and may mail it out within the next week or so. Oh thank God! I feel so much better now knowing I am not the only one with that dilemma. But, I am told that they have waiting lists they can select from and that is some consolation. I just wish SFSU would speed up the admittance process, because I am definitely throwing caution and inconsideration to the winds and accepting SFSU's offer if they accept me. I feel bad because UChicago has done all this work, gave me a preliminary financial aid award and a $19,000 scholarship which covers half the tuition, but I still have $42,000 in loan I have to borrow. Compare that to $27,100 at SFSU, I would be mad not to accept SFSU's offer. I have undergrad loans too Anyways, we can only wait, pray like crazy and hope for the best
  4. For those of us who got interim financial aid awards from SFSU, you should have another email from the financial aid award office bearing good news that the SUG will be available to eligible graduate students for 2012-2013. It covers the tuition fee, which is probably why our awards were less than the COA. The SUG is approx the difference. Wonderful news because tis the only free money we get....I'll gratefully accept it. Glory hallelujah! This is awesome news :-)
  5. You are right! I am never doing this again...it was a nightmare and took too much time...then there is all this waiting etc....nope...never again.I see you have accepted CSUDH.....congratulations! I wish you all the very best in your endeavors too Oh, yeah, I was very lucky when I called the department, someone answered. She told me that the admissions staff were just finalizing the applications and they will be sending letters of acceptance in the mail at the end of April. Good luck to all of you waiting....I hear they will only select 25 and have been inundated with applications.
  6. I would have liked to as well (MA). Unfortunately, one of my recommenders made such a big deal about the bureaucracy of requirements from the Universities that it made me realize that it was an imposition. He even recommended that I limit my applications to 3 instead of the 10 I wanted to apply to. Fortunately, I was accepted to at least one, waiting to hear from another and the third one declined my application on the basis of incomplete documents.....they did not get my fall transcript on time....which is fine as I got into UChicago which was my first choice. SJSU was my third choice.
  7. Sharing an apartment sounds plausible, but if you value your privacy, a studio can cost a minimum of $636, which is what I am doing. Then there is the International House. I think there are a lot of options available for anyone on low-inciome that one just needs to explore. Good luck.
  8. Oh dear! Didn't realize there was even bureaucracy involved in withdrawing a committment. I was told that even if you withdraw, they have a list of students on waitlist, they would just pick from. I do remember however, when accepting UChicago's offer, there was a clause that said once I accepted this offer, I would not pursue any other offers. If you had one of those, I suggest you seek legal advice before you withdraw. BTW, I am considering the same option
  9. Oh dear! Never thought of this. I just sent email thank yous I think I am going to follow the lead of two respondents; borrow this idea. Thanks (no pun intended )
  10. Then again, there are other employment options for social workers such as the UN, not for profit organizations, community projects even freelancing on an independent contract basis that pay more lucrative salaries. I would not give up. If it is a passion, go for it. Who knows what the futurehold in the next two years. It is better that you take the risk now (life is fraught with them) than regret later because you failed to pursue your passion. Pragmatism is good, but it can hinder progress and pursuing your dreams. Good luck with your endeavors
  11. Hi: That state funding you mentioned subsidizes tuition and is the only free funding you will get for grad. school. Then again, I got a separate notice from Financial Aid that cautioned me that even that "aid" may not be available for graduate students and they were checking on it.
  12. I'm curious. Aren't PhD programs fully funded regardless where you come from?
  13. Congratulations! You might like to consider exploring ways to survive on a low income by living frugally and sustainably. Living in Chicago is not cheap, but it is doable if you have this philosophy.
  14. I don't know......I was admitted to UChicago with a 3.81 GPA. I would apply anyway. Besides, you can always apply for a waiver of the application fee. good luck with your endeavors.
  15. Hi: I have been admitted to UChicago -SSA MA and the department offered me a scholarship that covers half the tuition. I also received a preliminary aid package (loans and work study) but with a shortfall of $13,000 (as per COA) that is not guaranteed because it is a Gradplus loan and depends on credit check,. What happens if one's credit is poor and cannot secure a co-signer? Are there any other options apart from, worst case scenario, withdraw for a local state university that has given me a financial aid package with loans half the cost? The problem is I am still an unclassified student because I have not received an acceptance letter from SFSU. Furthermore, their MSW program is not as attractive as UChicago's. So, I am kind of stuck in the same "sinking" ship right now.
  16. Hi everyone: Thank you so much for your valuable responses. I apologize for taking so long to respond. I am currently in my final semester of undergrad and it is proving to be the busiest of the past two years thanks again.
  17. I sooo hear you! One of my referees (professor) was really upset at the "non-traditional questionnaire" he had to fill out and told me so.
  18. Ouch! Now that really hurts
  19. Hi: Love this cafe! I live in CA, but may have to relocate to Chicago, if accepted into the MA program there. Any advice, no matter how miniscule or nonsensical, would be gratefully accepted. Have applied to all grad schools in San Francisco, LA Areas for MSW program, but they offer only clinical, whereas UChicago offers both clinical and social administration (policy and programs); which perfectly matches my interest.
  20. Thank you. So am I..probably even older and I sure can empathize with the original poster. I am still in undergrad...late starter and all that and am applying to grad school (MSW) for the fall of 2012. This discussion group has made me feel a whole lot better about grad school.
