  1. NYU History had its prospective student weekend in mid/late February, and has since sent rejections and waitlists. At this point, I would straight up ask your POI or the Graduate Program Assistant.
  2. Ah, OK. I was just wondering about the visa.
  3. Are you an international student?
  4. Ahem....
  5. We are trying to get our house into selling condition (mostly declutter for presentation) before listing it, my husband is job hunting, etc. We wan to move in mid June or so.
  6. So, what happens after one accepts an offer of admission? I ASSume I will hear from the department of school later in the spring/summer about registration, financial arrangements for payment of funding, and otherwise officially becoming a student but I'm not sure.
  7. I see. That makes sense. I think that most grad students are not unionized though, so those of us who have been accepted to schools who do have grad student unions are lucky.
  8. Ashiepoo, just out of curiosity, what instabilities put you off Minn?
  9. No, in British English the H is nearly always pronounced, so 'istorian is not correct in that case. I have no clue how 'an historian' came to be but it drives me bonkers.
  10. I got not one but three rejection notices from Harvard. One on the website, one a week letter via email to check website, and then one in snail mail. I get it, I'm rejected, no need to be obnoxious about it!
  11. Congrats, Heimat!
  12. I never heard back
  13. I got my official revised admission letter from NYU with the new funding info. I never thought I'd get in, let alone be offered such an incredibly generous funding package. I'm floored, really.
  14. I have a family, own property, have a stable job and I still don't have my shit together. Sure, those things are nice, but they are not the be all and all (yes, even the family). Of course, my family thinks I have everything a person could want and wonder why the heck I'm messing it up to pursue "yet more school."
  15. Early American. I asked questions on the email so a reply was assumed. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
  16. Not on leave. We did talk on the phone about two weeks after the admission notification but did not meet at the prospective student weekend as the POI was on a teaching assignment in another location. Advisor assignments are temporary until one is officially declared sometime in the 2nd semester. You may keep the same advisor or ask someone else to advise you.
  17. Guys, it's been two weeks since I emailed my POI about accepting the admission offer and I haven't heard anything back; it's crickets over here. Considering I didn't hear anything at all when I attempted contact pre-application, this is really freaking me out. I hope it's not an indication of what the next 5+ years will be like.
  18. Today I got word that I was awarded an additional fellowship with higher summer stipend. I had no idea I had been put forward for this. It was a nice surprise.

    Paleography

Yeah, I'm more concerned with reading. Thanks, all!

    Paleography

The thing is that Medieval Latin paleography, for example, won't help me much with Early American manuscripts. I'm definitely serious about learning, not just for my research but because I have an interest in paleography and manuscript studies. I'm also very interested in codicology and bibliology. How many PhDs can one have????
  21. I took a class similar to this in college. It was great.
  22. Iconoclasm 101, but I guess that already exists in the form of World History survey courses

    Paleography

I've been pondering this issue for a long time. Obviously, reading manuscripts is not easy if you can't read the handwriting even if you know the language, which means one needs to learn paleography, especially the paleography of the period/geographical era pertinent to one's research. The thing is, I have yet to find a department that teaches a course on paleography for its graduate students. How the heck are we supposed to learn paleography? Trial and error sounds awfully time consuming, not to mention unreliable. I was just looking at a digitized document and having some trouble with quite a few of the words, and I thought I'd ask to see what your thoughts are on the matter.
  24. I hadn't seen the results but I knew it was in the works. I wonder if it applies to all graduate students on university funding or only those funded through TAships and other service funding.
  25. I'm moving pretty far and have a house so we have a lot of crap to get rid off and to move. We plan to have some yard sales so that not all is lost. We also have to sell our house so that's another hurdle I hate right now, but it should cover the expense of moving the things we want to keep. Thankfully, we also have some savings .
